Stats: I EAT TO LIVE HEALTHY AND EXERCISE TO LIVE STRONG!
WOE: Lost it with Atkins / RUNNING to keep it off!
Start Date: January 19, 2002 - 6 YEARS ON ATKINS
New job .. new opportunity to spread the word

Okay, so I started a new job on March 17th... and word has already spread that I am a runner and have lost weight following LC ... can't help it ...

So today, a girl I barely know wants to know what's my secret ... so I tell her .. its basically a sugar-free/starch-free lifestyle combined with rigorous exercise .. she asks me "so how many miles do I have to run a day to look like you?"

My answer: you need to start in the kitchen.

So I send her a full-length email about how to eat ... i.e. no sugar, no starch, etc.

So now, she's making a new grocery list ... and she's cranking up the exercise ...

Her goal: to be like me .. I have to laugh .... I told her, its no secret...honest ... just give up the junk and see what happens next!

Betty

Ok! I want to know your "menu-secrets"!

Did I mention I loathe running? I love biking and the rowing machine is my new favorite cardio! I could row for several thousand meters without realizing it!

Lora, its no secret, really ! Lots of Linda Sue recipes, the total elimination of sugar/starch .. yes, it really *is* that simple!

Lots of eggs, lean proteins, non-starchy veggies and low-gly fruits .. lots of water and good supps .. and whatever exercise you love!

Rowing is EXCELLENT !! Good for you, girlfriend!

That is awesome! I love it when someone shows genuine interest in what I am doing for my weight loss.

I had a girl ask me last week what I was doing, and she said 'oh? well I tried the cabbage soup diet and lasted 2.5 before I went and ate everything in the cupboard..... oh look, a shiny object..........'

As with other forms of evangelism, what I have found works best is concentraing MY OWN SELF on walking the walk, and being ready to admit my failures and take 'em like a woman!

I accept (though of course I don't like it) that I can't and won't be able to influence everyone to my way of thinking about the things I find truly important in life.

If just a FEW people come to low carb (or God, or treating their children and husbands with respect and kindness, or anything else I believe in and try to live) in some small part because of the example I have set, I can accept the thousands of "failures" I have no doubt racked up over the years!

Amen, sister !!! I could *not* agree with you more!

Its interesting; I really don't try to evangelize anyone any more with Atkins or my exercise. I have my running medals at work which seem to open the door because they say "wow, those are cool, are you a runner?" to which I am more than happy to say, "yes, but I wasn't always...you see, I lost 40+ pounds and have kept it off for over 6 years ..." suddenly, they're interested in hearing more ..

Yes! I love rowing!

I was teasing you about the menu secrets! I know what I need to do! I'm getting help for my eating disorder and on a food plan (at the moment). I call the nutritionist on Friday for a menu "tune-up".

Things may be looking up!

Betty - I am going to be another one of your "followers". twyla, on the callanetics thread said I should hook up with you. I have been chatting with her for a day or so now, and trying to figure things out. She then said to contact you!!!! So, HERE I AM! Now what? Let me know when you're ready to hear my story. It's long, but the short of it is, been trying lc for a year, doing nowhere. Don't know which plan to follow - diet ADD! Just found out I have an allergy of yeast, gluten, rye, wheat, oats and dairy. So, figured i should do lc as what else does it leave??? Okay, so, do I get the adkins book and start with induction? I have NO support at home. I have a mom who is 80 years old and can run circles around me, thin,; my 23 year old daughter, is thin and runs marathons and neither one of them can figure out why I am fat, why I can't lose weight, why can't I stop eating wrong foods....they are on me all the time. I really gained the weight after my husband and dad died, but did struggle most of my life. Need to lose at least 80 pounds. I'm not active much....oh, boy, what do I do now?? thanks a bunch for listening to me and I hope you are still around! Thanks.

I'm totally new here, and I hope I can inspire someone someday also! I have worked for years raising my kids alone, being a foster mom and just graduating the last of my foster kids. At 59, no more kids in school - yeah! New year..new me.

Gosh folks, I'm speechless! (and that doesn't happen often! )

Thank you all for your kind words! I really don't see myself as an inspiration, but I truly hope you all know that IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU! Its one choice at a time, one meal at a time, one day at a time! Before you know it, its LIFETIME MAINTENANCE!

Honest, its that simple! (oh and ya gotta exercise too, did I mention that?)

Betty,
I am very happy for you. You look very lean, very healthy. I do not think I could be like you because rigoris exercise is just not going to happen! Exercise yes, but at the intensity level you perform, I am just not wiredlike that! I think I read you did 12 miles recently - running! lol.

I will admit I am surprised you posted 'lean proteins". I have read here often to eat high fat proteins. When you say lean, do you mean chicken breast, fish, eggs?

Thanks.

You don't have to run to get exercise. My favorite form of exercise is belly dancing. I have been taking weekly classes for over 4 years. It is the only thing I have ever stuck to long term.

And yeah...avoid sugar and evil starches!!!!

Jane, while you are working with Betty and shaping up to be more active, add another LCFriends thread to your list: Eating up to BMR, no matter what! for guidance on how to eat as much as our body needs for basic breathing. Some folks are eating too little to allow a body to work right or to lose weight. Check it out. Has changed how I look at LC and is just about to help me cross back into THREEdom!

Betty, I think that is great that others have been so inspired because of you & you can help them achieve their goals with those simple steps. It must feel wonderful to be such a shining star to others. Did you ever think-in your wildest dreams-that you'd come so far to inspire others to be like you?

You are a prime example of not practicing what you preach but rather preaching what you already practice.

Dyan, NEVER did I ever think I'd be anyone's inspiration. Honest.

I started Atkins on sorta-a-dare .. I read the book and thought the man was either deranged or egocentric .. I mean, really, telling people they could eat fat and LOSE weight? RIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. And so I set out initially with one goal in mind...to prove this weirdo WRONG once and for all. Well, you know the rest of the story ..l. He's exonerated and I'm humiliated ... but that's okay, because I'm 40 pounds lighter and in the best shape of my life! I love that man !!!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it.
