If a person gains or bloats on coconout oil (Fawn plz chime in)..

First off I know this is a YMMV thing as we are all different. Still wanted to start the convo. I think alot of folk avoid CO because of this, when they should still be eating it.

*is it because they lack the necessary enzymes to digest it? (I find this hard to believe for us that have been LC'ing for a long time and are used to eating high fats)
*is it because of some type of harmful organism die off (such as yeast?)

Start off with 1 tb, and work your way up? How long to wait before you add a 2nd tb?

Do you lower your cals in other areas to fit the CO cals in, or do you eat it in addition to your regular cals?

Any thoughts? I think my bod is used to the 1 tb... I have gone off and on CO for years, usually because of bloat/gain or whatever. I probably don't give it long enough or eat too much too soon. I think 1 tb per day (I've been doing this for a week) is good. I feel great and don't feel bloated or anything.

Just wanted to hear what you all have to say on it.

I think if you start out slow and increase slowly, and still see a gain and bloat than you are probably allergic to coconut. Some people have the yeast/fungus die-off reaction which would be different I think, like diarrhea and fatigue.

Give it two weeks Allie. Bloat is in fact common. You've been on 1 tbs. now increase to two this weekend......(that will give you time to be relaxed if you have no plans....just wear your bloat jammies)
In another few days, increase it to 3

It travels directly to the liver Allie without the need for bile activity. Here, it is distributed immediately for energy. I would doubt that enzyme supplementation would be necessary but never say never!

Yeah, I wouldn't go more than a few days without increase if it's not making you nauseous.
Oh, and I don't reduce my fat intake anywhere Allie.....but like you , I also don't do grains.

When I first started putting it in my chai latte, it grossed me out. Now I love it, and can hardly drink it without!

I also, just started mixing 1 T with 1 T of natural PB. I eat it as a snack or a dessert. It's delicious!

I love to cook with it. Eggs, veggies, you name it.

Oh, and I was really apprehensive when I first bought CO, as I HATE coconut. Go figure!

Keep it coming Fawn and Allie!! I really want to become more consistent with my CO consumption...but I always feel it contributes to a gain and I back off.

Any advice and help would be great!

Thank you

Ooooo! That sounds delicious, and probably pretty true to chai's origins! I'm going to have to give that a try tomorrow.

I've been taking a couple of tablespoons, mixing in about 6-7 macademias, and either a teaspoon of Designer Whey Natural Vanilla, or a couple of drops of stevia. This broke a stall-cum-gain pattern I had going! Since starting it, instead of slowly gaining a few ounces a day, I've lost about 4 lbs just in the last 5 days, so I'm now nearly 1/2 lb. below my previous low point from several weeks ago!

Yes, it does taste like coconut! I have both Tropical Traditions Gold Label and Nutiva. I honestly like the Nutiva better, even though I've been using TT for years.

I'm going to try mixing it with some almond butter...or maybe some of the Trader Joe's Macademia/Cashew Butter...someone better come take the jars away before I wipe out on them!

I use Nutiva and put a TB in my morning fruit smoothie. I really prefer the taste without CO, but I know it's good for me and baby; and I won't stay full 'till lunch unless I add it.

HI . Good questions Alliecat
I understand that you don't reduce your fat amounts but in regards to the question of lowering calories elsewhere to incorporate the co versus eating the co in addition to your normal calories is what confuses me a bit. Advice anyone? Thanks
Julie

It is my understanding that when Fawn answered, she indicated that she doesn't reduce fat or calories elsewhere to accomodate the CO consumption.

I think it may be trial and error for each person and I also think that each person should give it enough TIME to see what happens... patience.

Thanks Allie. I guess I just understood her referring to fat only. I personally am always nervous when adding more calories since I lose so very slow...takes me weeks to shake a pound or less sometimes so the thot of adding additional calories makes me nervous a bit.
BTW...... your avi....you look fantastic!

Spectrum Organic (not Virgin) does not taste like coconut; the absence of taste makes it good for cooking, but the virgin kind seems healthier (it was the first kind I bought, but I'm going to use up my current jar and then stop). I also have a jar of Nutiva and that's luscious.

Anyone know if Whole Foods carries the VCO? I get the Spectrum one in my regular market. If WF doesn't have it, I'll have to order online.

I get my Nutiva extra virgin CO from Vitamin Shoppe. Their prices are MUCH more reasonable than Whole Foods (when comparing same products).

Good thread. I just started reading, "Eat Fat, Lose Fat", by Mary Enig and Sally Fallon. They talk alot about coconut oil. I am going to try it. I have used it in the past for cooking (Spectrum) but I will get some virgin oil for eating.
I love coconut!!

Instead of just eating it at dinner, I'm doing it at B and D today. I LOVE how CO tastes when mixed in with yogurt. I LOVE the crunch of the hardened oil. Like Magic Shell. I dont add anything to the CO, just melt it and put it in plain.

1 cup yogurt (liquid stevia, sf syrup) mixed w
1.5 scoops whey protein
1 tb almond butter
1 tb CO

You can also get the beneficial effects of coconut without using the oil. Per Enig and Fallon in Eat Fat Lose Fat, you can use coconut milk, juice, creams, meat etc and include that in part of your diet. They do caution though not to ADD it to your diet but rather, to REPLACE your other fats with the coconut oil so that you aren't increasing your total calories.

As Fawn said, they also talk about either initial gains or stalls with it.

Are they online? By the time I pay shipping, it usually is a wash with the local prices. I'm going to check Whole Foods today, since I'll be down in that area, but otherwise I'll look into ordering it. Thanks!
