Coconut oil as a lotion and Soap
I know, another coconut oil thread!
![]() I just wanted to share what I have learned from the topical use of Coconut oil. First, as a "Lotion". Alot of people have complained that the Virgin coconut oil can end up drying to the skin and use the refined instead. I don't do that. I use the coconut oil first, to make sure that I am getting all the benefits of Virgin coconut oil. Then I will use a cheaper "lotion" over top of that. I get the benefits of coconut oil and the other lotion keeps the moisture In. Works like a charm for me. My skin feels fantastic. Coconut oil as a soap? You bet cha! I actually use it to take off make up and I also use it to wash my face. It's great as a condictioner for your hair. Rub it in and leave it in as long as you can...Then wash your hair as you normally would. After I shave my legs (or under arms) I always rub coconut oil in. Guess what? No razor burns and no bumps. I am a fair skinned lady (I like the word "Fair" so much better then Pale ) and I have always had a problem with the razor burn/bump thing. No more, thanks to Coconut oil.Even being in my 40's I would still have some "break outs" on my face. Guess what? You've got it...No more with using coconut oil. Remember me saying I was "Fair"? I could never tan. I would burn, peel and start all over again. Being in the Sun is important. I'm not talking about Over doing it...But it is our best source of vitamin D!!! I had also heard about Sun Screen being bad for us. Putting all those toxins and poisons on our skin. Well, last year I started using coconut oil before I would go outside in the summer time. For the first time in my life, I got a tan!!! Now, I won't be winning any Hawaiian tropics Contests, but I was no longer 1 shade away from albino and I blended into the crowd, of tan people, at the lake. Coconut oil does give you a little protection from the Sun (but you still can't stay out all day and not expect to burn) and after being in the sun (and after you have taken a shower) it will also help your skin heal from exposure to the sun. This was truly amazing to me. One time on the boat, last year, I did stay out a little too long and burned. I put the coconut oil on my skin that night and in the morning I was no longer burned. I also didn't "Peel" at all. We have used coconut oil on my granddaughter (she is 6 months old) since the day she was born. She has never had diaper rash and the skin on her face is amazing. None of those little bumps that babies can get from their skin being clogged. Also, no cradle cap. She even had a little bug bite, and we put coconut oil on it and in a matter of minutes...You could no longer see it. The joke around my house? Coconut oil. If something happens to someone, My husband or one of my kids will roll their eyes and say "Coconut oil"!! Yeah...mock me all you want, but it works! ![]() Oh, and one more thing...Coconut oil is very..."romantic" too! ![]() Hubby might Joke about it, but he sure lets me know when the Jar is getting low!!![]() 3rd son started shaving his head again. He had all kinds of bumps and cuts and put Rubbing alcohol on it! He complained to me and then said "No, don't tell me Mom, COCONUT OIL, right"? Well, he let me rub it into his bald head and it worked like a charm. It's funny, they still mock and tease me, but they all come to me (on their own) and have me help them use it. Men! ![]() |

It's great stuff isn't it?? I just have hard time using my expensive CO for beauty purposes, although I know one should take core of the body both inside and out. I buy a one gallon tub and I finish that in a month and half or two. How much do you use just on your skin? maybe I should buy a smaller jar to keep in the bathroom?

Tooter, ITA! I love coconut oil.
It can be *romantic* when used as lubricant and massage oil. Use your imagination from there, ladies ![]() I make 100% organic virgin coconut oil soap now. It's amazing. I'm very surprised that coconut oil used straight would be drying. Saponified coconut oil (soap) can be drying if not superfatted, the way I make mine now. I give mine an additional 20% superfat so it's not drying. And yes it can be used as shampoo. I love it. I'm thinking about whipping it into a thick cream one of these days like I do my shea butter, just to see what happens.

I've been using coconut oil topically for several years! I love it! I don't use any other lotions any more. I use coconut oil soap, too.

I love this stuff. I was having a sort of eczema break out on my scalp near my forehead and I rubbed CO on it and it has been clearing up.Do you use the Co that still smells and taste like coconut or the expellar pressed that has no flavor?

Ack I had the worst experience with applying ev coconut oil to my face. I put some on my cheeks as moisturizer and immediately broke out in a burning, red rash/welts (which went away in a few hours after I washed the oil off). And i only used a tiny bit too. I've tried it one more time on my face and had the same thing happen. When I take it internally, I have no skin reactions though.
So if you've never put coconut oil on your face, to be on the safe side, i suggest that you try it at night when you dont have to go anywhere just in case you have a similar reaction. Also, i use pure jojoba oil on my face with no problem, so i wonder why my skin can't tolerate coconut oil? Last edited by thestreets; 03-17-2008 at 02:00 PM.. |

yeah how do you make soaps?? I'd love to make them for my DD and myself!
I usually use jojoba on my face, it's the closest to natural oils in the face. ![]() |

And as far as using it as a lubricant, I have totally found it to be awesome and "Natural". And to top it off, the properties of Coconut oil are anti-yeast which helps prevent yeast infections and it's also "healing" which means you don't have any irritations. It certainly is perfect for me. |

I would think that a natural product like coconut oil might be safer on private parts than a chemical lubricant. Of course I'm no doctor, but I don't see how it could be harmful

![]() It also is a deodorizer. Heck, it keeps you clean, odorless, it has healing properties to it and is a Natural lubricant. I have never found anything else to work like that. I won't use any thing else. |

Anything but a water based lubricant causes condoms to lose efficacy in preventing HIV and STD's. Not just condoms but any latex based birth control (condoms, dams, diaphragms, and other latex safer-sex products) Perhaps this is one of those YMMV things (sans condom for all you married and monogamous people), but I thought the other side of the coin needed to be presented. I came of age in the AIDS era and anything other than safe sex is unsafe (unless you are married or in a long term relationship and been tested) Just trying to responsible. I'm happy that it works for you, however, doctors have warned against oil based lube since the sexual revolution. Oil can trap bacteria which causes infection and a host of other problems. Bacteria does not only grow in the form of yeast, as I am sure you know. |

The lauric acid in coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-protozoal and antiviral
![]() so those of you who use it for the face, does it matter if your face is oily? |

I use it everwhar too. Love it.
In the summertime, it's the only thing that keeps my heels from cracking. And my DH is another "eye-roller" when I say, "Get the coconut oil...." But he goes and gets it! LOL! |
