Is it trying? Well, it truly softens your skin and does wonders, but after you have absorbed it all (and it's dried off) it has a "drying" effect, but it's unlike one I can describe. It's like your skin won't hold the moisture in, but has all these other wonderful effects. Does that make sense? A layer of lotion on top of the coconut oil would work to keep the moisture in. You would do great doing that. I have a store bought Hemp oil (which also has coconut oil) Store bought lotion that I use as well for That, Under clothes (for the day) At night, I will put on the Coconut Oil and then On top of that I will rub in Sweet almond oil before I go to bed. HTH

For those who put it on your face or hair do you use the GOOD StUFF or can you use the cheaper brands?
I have the 'extra virgin' and the super cheap walmart brand "Louana'. Im wondering which I should use for cooking and which for face and hair?? right now I use the cheap stuff on my face as moisturizer and it really does work well! I jsut started using it instead of a HAIR GEL too!! Its amazing stuff. I like to cook with the good stuff though. |

I have heard that people use the Louana brand on their face, skin and body because it doesn't have the drying effect and holds moisture in. You can use the Louana and alot of people like it. I don't because I want the antibacterial, anti-yeast, antiviral, etc... benefits. ETA: It's just a personal choice. I Don't think there is a "right or wrong". It's what works best for you and your wants and needs. Last edited by Tooter : 03-29-2008 at 06:21 PM. |

Thanx Tooter. Have you ever used CO on your hair while it was DRY? AFTER styling it? I tried that INSTEAD of hair gel and amazingly it works.lol.
I didnt like all the chemicals in the hair gels and my bf was getting allergic reactions to it. |

dawnyama and Tooter,
You can use this on your face? What about the treatment of bad skin? My niece has bad skin, white bumps, blackheads, acne and she has tried everything. My sister is against accutane and retinols because of the serenity and harshness. How would you clean w/ EVCO? Rub in and remove w/ tissue? and would you also then moisturize using it right after? |

I use it to clean my face and as a make up remover. I put some in my hands (I use more then when I use it for a lotion) to melt and just rub it all over my face. I then wash it off with a wet wash cloth. Then I warm just a little on my hands and rub it in as a lotion. Don't have your niece use anything else (like another lotion or oil) on top of her skin and Coconut oil. Just have her use the CO at first. You don't want to have anything getting in the way of it "healing" her skin. If she has too much oil on her skin and it feels greasy...Just have her use a towel or dry wash cloth to wipe off the excess. |

Doesnt it get worse before it gets better? The acne that is. I have heard that the CO will kind of like "draw" it out and it seems to get worse before it gets better. I dunno. Just what I have heard on some of the threads.

My 12 yr old is concerned about his skin as well. He has these bumps on his face and has asked me what to do. I automatically said coconut oil. I showed how my face looked and suggested he do the same. I use coconut soap to wash with, coconut oil to put on when I step out of the shower and for the dryness, when I feel tight in my face, I put TT Baby Silk on top. Now my eldest is putting coconut oil only where he needs it--his cheeks. On top of that nothing else. He wants to use lotion, but I told him never to put just any lotion on his face. He doesn't understand just yet about how the face is very different than the rest of your body when you have bumps on it. Just follow what Tooter has posted and she will have great skin. Jamie is right in that it might get worse before it gets better. Tell your niece to stick with it and she will see results. A lot of people will quit without knowing this. I tell you this as someone who in college my mom wanted me on Accutane because I had blemishes so bad. The once a month pregnancy testing scared me away--they do not want you pregnant while taking it as it causes horrible deformities in the fetus. I wasn't even in a relationship at the time and they still insisted on the testing. How awful! Glad I didn't go that route.

I use the Louana brand right now for oil pulling occasionally on my hands & elbows. Are you saying that the virgin coconut oil would be better? I don't cook with it very often, but would like start using it on skin, ingesting up to 3 Tbsp a day. What benefits would I not get from the Louana? TIA. |

The best treatment for teenaged zits is a low carb diet! Sure, the coconut oil can't hurt, but carbs are turning out to be the big culprit for acne...

, and I must say that I completely agree. A natural oil like coconut could probably offer protection versus many organisms since it is has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Not that it should be sole protection-- nor do I think it should be used with condoms since it may decrease their effectiveness. But in general, I think it seems like a great natural alternative to traditional KY jelly--- whose ingredients are:Chlorhexidine Gluconate, Glucono Delta Lactone, Glycerin, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Methylparaben, Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide THAT seems gross. Shudder. |

Ok well I ordered the TT lotion and mouisturizer to add as a sealant for my skin and my face.
I have to say I have not noticed much difference on my skin, but my niece said her blackheads look clerer, although her skin is a bit dry and scaly after using CO on her face. IS that normal, like some sort of cleansing thing going on?She has also brroken out a bit more, but I think that is normal right? Like getting worse before it gets better? She is determined to stick w/ it though because my sister will not put her on harsh medicines. Also, CO does stain clothing! Or at least ours!!! She has ruined 2 pyjama tops and I have ruined DBF's T shirts. Any advice on oil removal from clothing? I read online baby powder, so I have it in the stains settin in. Laundry day is tomorrow so we'll see.

Thanks so much for this thread, Tooter. I have been using EVCO as a toner on my face every night along with jojoba oil around the eyes, and my skin has never looked better!
Also, I use it to clean my navel piercing (along with pure aloe gel), and it is healing very quickly. I need to buy a gallon of this stuff! |

Coconut oil alone can be a bit drying. Mix it with Sweet Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil.

My first day here and I'm glad to find this thread. I have spent quite a few minutes standing in front of the suntan oil shelves at most of the major stores trying to pick out a suntan oil. They all have such unnatural ingredients that I never bought any of them. I try to sunbath some of my limbs everyday to get vitamin D but I don't like looking at dry skin. This is a great reminder of benefits and ease of using pure coconut oil. I love it. I used it today and it looked great gleaming in the sun.
