Just to say that I'm betting those who push cascara sagrada may have some to sell. The colon doesn't need to *work out* IMO.
And for me cascara causes terrible griping cramps in the belly. No way. I agree with the posters who say: 1. The colon is a self cleaning organ. 2. High fiber natural foods, high fats, and plenty of water are the best for colon health. 3. If you need help, probiotics, vitamin C, digestive enzymes, extra fiber supplements and a nice walk are the best things to get things moving again. 4. If you have issues only on low carb, check your dairy and cheese consumption. I have a sort of low-grade lactose intolerance and when I eat cheese in particular, if I don't take supplemental lactase enzymes along with the cheese--ack--I'm in trouble. I've had constipation issues and some IBS all my life. But when I practice what I preach, I have no problems.

I've never been able to drink mega doses of water, even when I am drinking lots of water. I don't think my body likes it. I've been this way for 20 years, I had GERD before I knew what it was and when I stopped drinking tonnes of straight water it cured itself. I can drink alot of water stretched out a little at a time. I don't drink as much as i can just as much as I feel I want. when my body says stop I stop. And that is usually before 16 oz at any given time. Yet I don't have trouble with Bowel movements often. I guess I eat a lot of soups and watery veggies like tomatoes and cucumbers and lettuce, so that water counts too. But I also eat flax seeds and take magnesium regularly. Not for bowel reasons , but I suppose it helps.

I found this page on the 'gallbladder cleanse' topic, some of it is against the idea, but I found all of it fairly interesting.
3.11 The gall bladder flush | Henriette's Herbal Homepage I would be interested to know, if the gallbladder can form stones, what can dissolve them (as opposed to force-them-out). |

Added: One of the ideas of the cleanses is that small stones can be forming already and regularly flow out and get dissolved and / or stay inside and get larger. the cleanse is to get the smaller stationary ones out before they can become bigger and block it up. Damn, it ate my message.
I'm very interested in this but I want to understand more. One of the posts on that page I quoted said that the combination of the lemon juice and olive oil and the bile actually created the green 'balls' people called stones; that they could be broken up easily in the fingers, whereas 'real' gallstones were hard as rocks basically. It suggested that the "evidence" people are seeing "that the process works", was simply the side effect of the process itself, not gallstones. I was hoping someone could address that, maybe refute it, I dunno.

Like the grain of salt that makes a pearl ![]() I was told that passing through the colon, picking up bacteria, water, and eventually being exposed to oxygen all cause the pre-stones to melt away after you've passed them. In a way you are right. the little green balls ARE bile, but bile should be liquid, not little balls, hmm? The lemon juice ( actually should be fresh grapefruit juice) and the olive oil doesn't create the little balls. The juice forces the stomach to empty as quickly as possible( oil causes slower emptying), The oil triggers the gall bladder to expel it's contents. Since you've drank a buttload of oil all at once, the gall bladder squeezes out a lot of bile to dissolve the oil. and you've opened up the ducts and relaxed them with Magnesium hours before, everything can move out unrestricted by tightened sphincters and tightly cramped muscles and such. It is a very MOVING experience ! ![]() The page that directed me through the cleanse, the author showed what looked like a river rock in the palm of his/her hand. It was a stone that was passed on the third go round of the cleanse. That one was NOT gonna dissolve, and I doubt it was made by lemon juice and oil. Hold on a sec, see if I can find it. . . . Dr. Hulda's Liver cleanse gallbladder cleanse gallstones flush recipe Oh, BTW take this page with a grain of salt. I don't go along with everything they say, Some of it sounds quack. I just used this page to get the gall cleanse formula and timetable. No zapping or dental extractions for me. Last edited by metqa : 06-19-2008 at 06:15 PM. Reason: Grain of Salt warning |

Hey, where did you get the hilarious quote in your footer?
I saw that pic. So... why olive oil? Why not, say... macademia nut oil? Why grapefruit juice? I'm wondering why, is all -- there are oils (like MN) that taste way better than olive if you gotta be chugging something (ugh). Do you do a 'smaller' version of this first to kind of work your liver/gallbladder up to dealing with the rush? My grandmother had her gallbladder removed and I remember, I was 8, the description, "It was nearly as big as a basketball!" What would cause a gallbladder to enlarge? (She died a year later of severe rapid lung cancer. Never smoked a day in her life... but my grandfather smoked cigars.) What are the 'dangers' of this kind of process? There must be some ('anything that can help, can hurt' is an old truism). Thanks for your time. |

I guess it was really inflamed and irritated to get so big. I saw pictures of stones the size of baseballs, but yikes.I don't know why olive oil? I guess cause it's a healthy oil. I suppose you could use coconut or macnut, but seems kinda expensive for just chugging and pooing right out. I didn't do any mini cleanses. I got an unexpected three day weekend and just decided to do it. But you are supposed to be able to repeat this cleanse often if you want so I guess you could "build up" or repeat as necessary. Lot of lost weekends though ![]() Danger, Will Robinson! : I suppose it is possible to move dormant stones into a position where, if they did not come all the way out, could cause gall pain to start, but I'm just speculating. If you weren't completely empty, you might upchuck the oil. Or you might do that anyway if you have trouble drinking it. Aspirating oil is NOT FUN! NOT FUN AT ALL! Nor is vomit, but I digress (I gave myself laryngitis cause I coughed whilst vomiting and inhaled stomach acid, PAINFUL , but that is unrelated to this) I DO know why Freshly Squeezed Grapefruit. I've read on that page and others that lemon juice can get slimy when mixed with the oil. Even canned grapefruit juice can do it, but something about fresh squeezed grapefruit juice emulsifies the oil and makes it watery instead of "oily". My Oil did this, and It was easy to drink , so long as I didn't smell it in my mouth . . . let me explain that. I drank it all without taking my mouth from the glass. I took a big breath, put the glass to my mouth and drank and drank, and when I need to take a breath, I breathed through my nose without taking the glass away from my mouth, so no air entered my mouth, kinda breathing and drinking at the same time. Once i finished the oil, I accidentally took a breath through my mouth and my senses took over and realized that I just drank a bunch of oil, and tried to make me feel ill, but I just wiped my lips and drank some grapefruit juice to chase it down. It wasn't unpleasant. It tasted like thick grapefruit juice and not at all like oil as I drank it. I wouldn't do this unless I were in a good mood and ready to be indisposed for a whole day. I personally didn't have any negative effects, but everyone is different and I can't say that drinking half a cup of oil will may you feel like a million bucks. I wasn't hungry at all for the next day and a half. I have no idea how this would effect existing hemmerhoids. you might soil your pants if you're not paying attention. . . I bought the Colonix, and tried it. I didn't run to the bathroom like you mentioned, but it wasn't the two to three times they said I should be. I have always gone at least once a day--like clockwork. So I returned the Colonix because it was a 60 day full refund guarantee if I didn't like it. The Paranil that came with it gave me the WORST headaches too, and it took days for them to stop. I am still waiting for my refund too.
That's $88 I can use for something else. In the meantime, I purchased some Phyllyum Husk fiber similar to Metamucil from Costco, and it works just fine keeping my colon unplugged. I am going to need it since I have come back to LCing, and before this WOE used to slow me or stop me up all together.

Flaxseed, spinach and hot peppers. That gets the job done. LOL. I have 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal everyday now. I add it into whatever I can -- shakes, my omelets, my deviled eggs, my dips, my salads etc. The taste doesnt bother me as long as its mixed with something.

Schedule a colonoscopy. The preparation for it will clean out your colon slick as a whistle and you will find out if you have a healthy colon or not.
