dayquil disaster

omg i have horrible allergies and before work today i downed a full dose of dayquil to get me through the work day. i just looked up the carb count and it has 24 carbs in one dose! i blew it and i'm only on day two of atkins., i want to cry. what does everyone take for allergies? by the way i think most of my allergy problems were coming from carb anyway.,

You didn't blow it - you made a mistake. Really limit your carbs the rest of the day and also get yourself an allergy PILL!!! I take Claritin when I have symptoms! I don't take any liquid meds because they all seemed to have carbs. Keep Plugging Away!!! --Cris

You had to do something so don't beat yourself up. Just use it as a learning experience. I take Claritin and sometimes the doctor gives me Allegra.
Keep posting and best of luck!

DayQuil makes gel caps too, you could try those, or any of the OTC allergy meds, like benadryl (can make you sleepy, beware!), allegra, drixoral, etc. If you're congested, get one that contains a decongestant too.

I suffer from them ALL year long - I just bought a neti pot, which lets you "wash out" your sinuses with saline - tried it for the first time last night, and again this morning, I'm hopeful I can get OFF the meds by using this! We'll see!

Don't panic....this is different than going out and eating donuts for breakfast.

Please, please, please do not do something like not eating for the rest of today to make up for this. Go about your usual schedule/meals. Drink your fluids.

Most of all: DO NOT let this become an obstacle bigger than it is.

thank you for all the tips. actually i ate a little today but i was afraid so i probably didn't eat enough during work but now that i am home i'll be ok. everyone here is pretty darned smart and helpful. i never thought about medicine even though the books tell us to be wary and of course right after the dayquil i chewed a bunch of gum to get rid of the taste of the medicine(more dumb carbs) tomorrow i won't be so thoughtless. now i have to hide the dayquil from my poor sneezing husband.

Sorry that this happened to you. They do make some diabetic cold meds, that might be sugar free. I would have NEVER thought to even look at the count on meds until recently. Don't beat yourself up over it, OK ?

I know how you feel, I have done this too!! Grrrr...I know how frustrating it can be. If you go to there website they actually show what ingredients are in waht so it makes it helpful. Also, I just take the gelcaps and I have never had a problem and they work good for me.

Do you at least feel better????

In the same boat

I've just started my second week of induction and I have a cold so i took two doses of dayquil throughout the day. I do feel crushed about it but... there's nothing i can do about it now.
Do i need to start induction again or just add a few days to it make it up, I've been really strict with it eating about 12-15 carbs a day and taking supliments for vitamins and minerals.

oh - please be careful with the saline wash! for a while, they were suggesting everyone do it (I've been told that for nearly 10 years - and even saw it in 'Prevention' a month or so ago), but recent research suggests that it could actually wash out protection if done when not congested....of course, that is newer research, so I'm not sure how solid it is!

Here's an excerpt (from healthday.com)
Sinus Rinses May Do More Harm Than Good
Researchers find long-term risks, but not all agree

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Nov. 9 (HealthDay News) -- Rinsing sinuses with a saline solution might have soothing short-term benefits, but it could actually make you more prone to infections in the long run by stripping your nose of critical immune soldiers.

"By washing the nose, we are removing the bad mucus but, unfortunately, we are also removing the good mucus that contains the antimicrobial agents as well," said Dr. Talal Nsouli, lead author of new research on the issue. "And, by depleting the nose of its immune elements, we expose the patient to more sinus infections."

What in the world are they thinking putting that many carbs in medication?

I try to do without, and use herbal teas. If I MUST take cough syrup I get sugar free. Even those have a ton of sugar alcohol which can stall you but not as badly as the regular sugar kind.

Try to calm down and keep things in perspective. You didn't "blow it", you made a mistake. You're only on day 2. Consider it a "false start" maybe.

The fact is, you'll make plenty of mistakes, during Induction and beyond. You're learning a whole new way of eating and there are all kinds of pitfalls out there to catch you out. You're on a learning curve. If you started learning something else new to you would you expect to know all about it and do it perfectly from day 1? Of course not.

Stop worrying about something you can't now change. You've gained some valuable new knowledge and are now better equipped to continue with your low carb journey.
