Hiya

New poster here. I started Atkins induction on the 3rd. I've tried low carb in the past (PPLP), but often fell off the wagon when I couldn't afford the food.

Basically, I've been overweight since the second grade. I remember we were getting weighed in class to show the difference between kilos and pounds (I might be dating myself here, but there was a time that the US actually planned to switch to the Metric system), and I freaked out. I spent the whole morning in the bathroom running in place to try to lose weight (lol kids). I don't remember what the scale read, but I know it wasn't that different than the other kids because kilos are bigger units.

The next year I was sent home with a note that I was overweight. I think I weighed 80 pounds. My mother, someone with weight issues herself, decided I was going to spend the summer eating cottage cheese and canned peaches. Whatever. It lasted a day and she forgot about it.

In Junior High, Mom went on WW and I did the program with her. She lost quite a bit of weight. I lost one pound the first week and a pound the second. She accused me of cheating and said I didn't have to follow it any more. She quit it soon after that. All I remember from that diet was being incredibly hungry all the time, eating diet bread with a slice of fake cheese on it for breakfast, and eating dry tuna for lunch.

As I got older, I became more active and I travelled a bit. I lost quite a bit of weight. I wasn't skinny, but I was down to size 14 jeans. When I came home, I gained it back. I became a vegetarian. At college there was little money left over to eat, so I bought the cheapest non-meat food. Pasta. White bread. Fake cheese. I didn't really gain weight, but even though I was starving all the time I didn't lose any either.

When I was 22, I starved myself and got down to 130 pounds and a size 6. I ended up in the hospital and eventually gained all that back. I have gone up and down a bit since then, usually because of increased activity and not any real effort to watch what I eat until a few years ago. I quit smoking and my weight ballooned. In that time, I have tried every diet known to man. I have eaten all raw foods, low fat, low calorie, tried to starve myself, different fad diets, but it all came back to this, the way of eating I know works for me (at least for the brief times I've tried it in the past).

This is my last chance to try to lose weight without getting gastric bypass or something like that. I am dangerously obese, and I know that I will either need to lose weight this way, through surgery and the consequences of that route, or die. You might notice that I have question marks on my CW and HW. I bought a scale a few weeks ago and I am too heavy for it. It supposedly reads to 315, so I am more than that.

I have a supportive husband who is a bit sceptical about the calorie and fat content of this WOE, but he's willing to see how it works for me. I would love to be able to fly this fall without having a seat belt extender. It seems drastic, but I flew at a relatively high weight before without one (I think I was a size 24W at that time). My ultimate goal is to be at least a size 10.

My sister has struggled with her weight as well, but she was never even close to this heavy. She tried Atkins a few years ago and did well. She's a great support, but it seems from reading this board even more support can be found here.

Zoombie from the sounds of things you have some eating issues. Don't we all in one form or the other

This plan will work if YOU work it, Get the book and digest it and then live it and it will be smooth sailing (without extenders) after that

What would be the benefit of that? Was there that much change between 92 and 2002 besides a modification of allowed foods? Weren't the concepts pretty much the same? Or did he have a big breakthrough in that decade?

Unless the concepts are totally different, I don't see the benefit of rereading the same material if the changed information is something I already have access to.

Hi Zombie
Thanks for sharing your story. I could relate to so much of it! I always hated public weighings in elementary school! I used to make myself sick with worry because I was always "the fat kid." I did all the WW plans years and years back, long before the counting points thing. I did Richard Simmon's Deal-A- Meal, all that fad stuff... I even did the cottage cheese and canned peaches thing! UGH! Any my weight just skyrocketed with each failed attempt.

I can even relate to the seat belt extender. I travel quite a bit and I aaaaalways think of that dreaded moment when I have to deal with the plane seat and belt...It is so awkward and embarrassing to see other people's reactions when you get on a plane and they look at you and think "please don't sit next to me..." like I am diseased or something. SIGH- don't even get me started!

Anyway- back to my point... so glad you posted. It is really encouraging to read others stories and know that there are people out there who truly DO understand all you have been thru in life when you have battled weight for most of it.

Welcome Aboard!

Hello and ! You'll find great support and lots of inspiration here. You said you quit low carb before because you couldn't afford the food. Low carb does not have to be expensive. Check the "Important Information and Popular Threads" sticky at the top of this board. There is a great thread there called "It is time for another round of cheapskate lowcarb!"

Good luck!

Thank you all.

Oh, and I wanted to say I didn't mean to come off snippy about the 2002 edition. I genuinely meant if there was a benefit other than the updated materials I will buy it and read it. Problem is, it was hard to get through the '92 book. Not because I was bored, it's that I've read/listened to PP, PPLP, and skimmed the '72 Atkins diet a few years ago. Because a lot of it is material I knew and I didn't have that "AHA! That's what's wrong with me!" factor, it was a little more difficult to stick to reading it. But I will if there is a major change in the 2002 revision other than food lists.

Nice to meet ya! I'd like to add...you came to the right place for support and encouragement. Good luck and post often!!...Oh, BTW....check out the recipe boards and LindaSue's website http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html I have to give Linda some of the credit for my loss so far...her recipes have made this WOE so much more enjoyable and it has helped me stay on track.

Julia and Karen both posted the links I was going to recommend to you. Make sure to check them out.

I have both books. I haven't finished reading the newer one yet, so I haven't started the old one. I am not sure of the differences. But, I do think in the original book maybe you counted total carbs and with the newer version, you count net carbs. Not sure as far as foods are concerned though.

If you browse around the sight, you will see 2 different forums one for Atkins Nutritional Approach and one for Atkins 72.

I am glad you are here. Post often, start a food journal and perhaps even a journal on the journal threads. They help me keep my sanity.

Looking forward to getting to know you. You can do this !!
