POPCORN

Hey Everyone! I've always loved popcorn and ate it on occasion the last time I was on Atkins and it really didn't seem to hurt----but I need to know the true numbers----if anyone truly knows. I know the microwaveable kind is loaded with salt, as is the kind at the movies, but what is the CARB DAMAGE?
It doesn't seem that bad on the package!
If anyone can break it down for me please let me know! :dunno:
Movie Kind? (favorite but dangerous)
ACT II w/butter? (love it at home)
Air Popped? (never really had it)

As Always thanks for the help! :D

sbarr 01-20-2007 04:24 PM

The carb damage is what the label says - it's about damage per serving and serving per bag.

A consideration here - most servings are 1-3 cups, if I recall correctly, so a bag of microwave might be 3-4 servings. Movie buckets are FAR more. If you're doing Atkins, this isn't what you'd be eating in Induction or early phases.

nurseypoo5 01-20-2007 04:28 PM

popcorn is my carb weakness. I cant even go to the movies because i dont have control over it. Im like jello.

I lost 50lbs last summer and ate popcorn 3-4 times (and too much of it) at the movies, and afterwards i'd be sick...bad tummy ache.

I never fell out of ketosis from it and popped several carb pills (to make me feel better LOL)...i still lost, but i do NOT recommend it.

I'd never buy popcorn for home, because i couldnt NOT eat it. Its a 1 time or so a month treat, if that. once i snuck in cheese cake and splenda nuts into the movie...but nothing beats theatre popcorn. i get a small..or share a med. w/lots of butter.

207 01-20-2007 04:30 PM

Thanks Sandra:D I know what the label says and it doesn't seem that bad---about 4 grams for unsalted air-popped. (1 cup)
Guess I'm trying to convince myself its OK huh?

207 01-20-2007 04:32 PM

Nursey you and I are the same there! Big Time Weakness!;)

sbarr 01-20-2007 04:32 PM

207 - Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! 1 cup - now how many cups are in a bucket of movie popcorn! Don't go there!!!! *gotcha*

If you eventually get to the point that you're in control of what you can eat, I'd say sneak in a single serve bag and nibble a piece at a time. Either that or make sure your movie date/friend/relative/spouse is very territorial and slaps your hand each time you reach for the popcorn.

fawn 01-20-2007 04:33 PM

Microwave popcorn is very unhealthy. It contains hydrogenated oils.
pre-maint. or maint. is where you may want to add the popcorn in. And at that, try to get non gmo real kernals and pop them in an air popper. Like the good old days when our food wasn't poisoning us!

207 01-20-2007 04:35 PM

Sandra: :hyst: You got me alright!
Thanks!
John

toogood 01-20-2007 04:35 PM

Popcorn is actually not too bad for you...........if you pop it your self. Get some kernels and pot it the old fashion way in a pot with some salt. The hot air popper is great also.

There's one brand, I don't remember which, that does mini bags that are 1 or 2 servings.

Fawn your theory may not be what I want to hear but I know your right;)
Thanks!

walkingwoman 01-20-2007 04:37 PM

I buy the 100 calorie packs and thoroughly enjoy myself

AllieCat0817 01-20-2007 04:37 PM

Deerfield Farms, from Walgreens.

Still I wouldn't think of touching it till Maintenance.

207 01-20-2007 04:39 PM

Thanks Everyone!
I think I'll make it a special treat food only and limit the intake!

popcorn is one of the few things I would allow myself while low carbing. It never knocked me out of ketosis.

One WEEK YESTERDAY!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Well yesterday I passed the one week mark for my low carb diet...It is getting harder for me...I am missing those durn carbs...:annoyed: ,but I have lost almost 10 lbs!!!
I went to the grocery store this morning and realized that I did'nt buy any junk!!! I mean I bought the things that I was allowed to have but my grocery cart looked really weird...lol!!!
I also got some Chocolate Cool whip to have on my sugar free jello...awww I just couldnt stand it and its only 2 carbs a serving...HOLY CRAP...I thought I was going to cry it tasted so good...hehehe.
The grocery store had a new thing...some shredded cheese with a pack of spices wrapped away from the cheese...You can add them to the pack of cheese to your taste...I got the mexican one and made me a few little melted cheese crackers to go with my chicken salad for lunch...they were awesome people!!!
I never really noticed how much crap there is in the grocery store that they try and sell for REAL FOOD>>>LOL.. If you got rid of the bad stuff you prolly would only need 2 or 3 ailes...hehehehe.
How does everyone get the photo under their name??? As you can see I can put em on the page but cant figure out how to it the way you guys have it...Thanks Angela...oh yeah the photo is me and my man of 8 yrs..hes lookin' kinda crazy...LOL...and I have a FEW more lbs on me since we took this photo..;)

The problem with popcorn is two-fold .. first, its higher in carbs (and its a starch) and second, PORTION CONTROL .. who can eat 1 cup?

Betty

slim@40 01-21-2007 09:54 AM

I you're on induction, popcorn is not allowed. It's a starch (sugar) and might trigger cravings. But I do miss movie theater popcorn.

Look up lung diacetyl disease. You just may change your mind about microwave popcorn.

Ah the microwave just another convenient killer.
I don't use a microwave on top of all of my other freakish habits.:D

DisneyPrincess 01-21-2007 10:04 AM

A bag of regular 94% fat free popcorn has about 55-60g carbs

doublepointgirl 01-21-2007 10:15 AM

Right now...I am a newbie and only on day # 8. I don't miss popcorn. But I don't know if I could resist if I went to the theaters.

I don't eat much popcorn at home. We buy the Boy Scout's light butter and DH and DD love it.

BUT - movie popcorn is my #1 weakness. I can eat 2/3 to all of a large popcorn w/ extra butter and salt. I just love it so much. It has DERAILED many a diet.

Luckily the price of a movie ticket just keeps going up and so do the price of concessions so movies are a huge treat for my family these days. Once I have some time into OWL I might try to find a way to make it work for a major treat...but for right now I am just STAYING FAR AWAY! :)

Fake butter? Hell no! Pop it in coconut oil and then melt some REAL butter over it! And sprinkle on some parmesan cheese and the herbal seasoning of your choice. Yummy, greasy goodness.

Your best bet, if you absolutely can't resist, is to get a bag of kernels and that way you can control how much you eat.

Click on User Control Panel, on the bar above. Then click Edit Avatar. You can either use one of their Avatars, of if you are wanting your pic (which you said), then go to the bottom of that page. You can either upload from a site like PhotoBucket or you can upload from your computer. Just make sure it is sized according to their specs. It tells you the maximum you can use. Hope this helps.

I haven't been able to figure out how to put in the thumbnails like you did.

I love popcorn also and I won't go to the movies unless I can have some, so I guess I won't be going until I am near goal. I only ever get that tiny bag at the movies and it is always enough. There is another brand we use for microwave that has healthy stuff and it is the closest butter flavor to the movies that I have ever had and I think it is called Smart Balance. It doesn't have transfat. But beyond that it actually tastes better than other brands.

LisaWV 01-22-2007 07:21 AM

That's the one thing about atkins... it allows us to have real butter.

Portion control is why I have to stay away!

Yes, but that's a respiratory most often contracted by factory workers BREATING IN vapors from butter flavoring containing diacetyl.

Therefore, I refuse to support this. And from your microwave? You don't breath any in when you open that bag? What happens from factory to home that prevents this?
