0 Carb Cocoa powder
 
While at Sprouts today, I found a cocoa powder that has 3 carbs per T and 3 gr fiber! I was plesantly surprised. The lowest I had found before was Wonder cocoa and it was 3 carbs with 2 gr fiber. The brand is Chatfield's Premium Cocoa Powder. Unsweetened - Alkaline Free

Mine says Chatfield's Premium Cocoa Powder but yours sounds like it is hot chocolate powder? My serving size is 1 T, calories 20, carbs 3 and fiber 3. Mine would be comparable to Hersheys cocoa powder you use for baking. Not hot chocolate mix.

But while we are on the topic... is there any kind of recipe for a very low carb "hot chocolate"? Even just made with water?? Please??? :D I know my winter will be much happier if I find out I can have a mug of hot chocolate each night.

I drink this all winter:


Hot Cocoa

2 rounded tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 packet of Splenda and the equiv. of 1 tsp. stevia ( using two diff. sweeteners really makes a diff.)

Water, cream, half n half, low carb milk <- I used 75% water & 25% other


Make a paste with the cocoa and sweeteners using boiling water.

Add water and ‘cream or half n half or low carb milk

Stir well and heat in the micro.

You can do all this in a pan on the stove also.

For a change, sometimes I add some cinnamon or all spice.

I'd be a little skeptical of any genuine cocoa powder that claims that all of it's carbs are fiber. That is not how cocoa powder generally is so you have to wonder if it's a label mistake. Maybe ask them for an explanation?

For some reason, I get totally high off cocoa even though I've read it isn't that high in caffeine? When I have the Lindt 85% chocolate bar I'm wired for hours... it's very strange!

It's probably the theobromine, not the caffeine.

Swiss Miss has a LC hot chocolate that only has 4g carbs plus 1g fiber (so there is 3 net carbs per serving). The package says "Diet", with no mention of low carb. Also, you need to make sure not to get their sugar-free by mistake, which has something like 10g carbs (although 10g is still fairly low, just not as low as 4g). It is somewhat hard to find, although super Walmart usually has it.

Interesting! I couldn't tell from that link if this is supposed to be a healthy compound or not? It seemed like it wasn't?

That explains why HOURS later after eating a small amt of chocolate I feel very wired.

Theobromine is a stimulant, so I wouldn't necessarily classify it as "healthy", but some may like the mood elevating effects and possibly extra calorie burning.

Epichatechin is a flavanol associated with healthy circulation and cardiovascular function. This is the healthy bioflavonoid in chocolate that you may have heard about.

I make this myself because it's cheap and fast. I like the fat free hot cocoa packets (the generic ones at the grocery stores here have 4 carbs per packet). I mix 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream and the rest water, then heat it in the microwave. Mix in the cocoa packet and that's it! It's rich, creamy and chocolatey!

Net carbs: 6 (4 in the cocoa packet and 2 in the 1/4 cup of heavy cream).

I had this this morning and just about died of happiness:

1 T cocoa powder
1 T heavy cream
1/2 T SF Torani vanilla syrup
6 oz coffee

Just a reminder - if it says it has 3 carbs, it may have as many as 3.9 carbs per serving.

I wouldn't count it as carb free; but cocoa powder in general IS low enough in carbs to enjoy :-)

u can just warm up a cup of the hood cc chocolate milk. (i actually add water to mine since its a bit sweet)

I like to use the Almond Breeze in my hot cocoa. IMO, it tastes like a Hershey bar with almonds. Yummy!!

Try unsweetened coconut milk and unsweetened almond milk -- both are very low in carbs, much lower than cow's milk. The first few times I drank hot chai or hot cocoa with these alternative milks, yeah, it was different, but I add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, even a dash of clove and/or allspice and suddenly I am focussed on a tasty, savory, low carb treat -- I find a low carb alterantive milky chai every bit as satisfying as hot cocoa. I also enjoy hot cocoa made with unsweetened almond or coconut milk -- I always add a dash of cinnamon and, usually, other spices -- the spices seem to replace the pleasure that the more creamy texture of cow's milk .. . I am not drinking hot chocolate in the traditional sense . . . but it's yummy and very satisfying.

I have eaten low carb for a long time, for I have Type I diabetes but I only recently discovered how very low carb and even low calories (I dont pay much attention to calories but I mention this for those who do) but for some reason, the idea of low carb hot cocoa only came to me now. Duh!!!

Cow's milk has a lot more carbs than unsweetened coconut or almond milk.

And for me, stevia is a yummy carb free sweetener. And splenda has a place, altho I lean towards stevia.

BAsically the only carbs that go into my hot cocoa is the chocolate powder. I use dark chocolate, unsweetened, (always organic for me, I never buy any non-organic anything) -- it's not that many carbs in the choco powder and the choco powder is just about the only carbs in the whole drink. Silk brand unsweetened almond milk had one carb per cup and I only use aobut half a cup -- cause I use boiling water for most of my cocoa -- I add boiling water to blend the cocoa powder, stevia/splenda, cinnamon/whatever and then I top off with some VERY low carb milk alternative -- maybe I've been low carbing so long I've move far far away from 'normal' tastebuds but to me, this hot chocolate with almond or cocoa milk (I reiterate: unsweetened milk alternatives) is just as yummy and satisfying as cocoa with milk.

When I ws first diagnosed diabetic, I met with a nutritionist who made a big fuss about the carbs in milk.I ignored her at the time cause I was not going to give up cream in coffee -- cream is low carb, right? But cream is also loaded with cholesterol.

I gave up coffee last FEb 2012 which meant I stopped drinking cream, cause coffee was the only way I still drank any liquid cow's milk. (I do plain yogurt -- whole milk yogurt has slightly less carbs so Iw as doing whole milk but I am back on nonfat -- there are nutritional trade offs in each choice).

I microwave 1/4 of Water for 1 min, stir in 1 TB of Cocoa Powder (1 Carb), then add 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocunut milk, 1/4 cup of half and half (2 Carbs), and 4-6 drops of stevia extract, then nuke for additional 30 sec to 1 min.

Here's a paleo hot cocoa recipe:

1 tbsp coconut butter, melted (see below)
2 tbsp cocoa powder
sweetener of choice to taste (this is OK with no sweetener, too)

Pour in enough boiling water to stir the above ingredients into a thick paste. Add more water to fill the cup.

I add a little heavy cream to smooth it out.

RE Coconut Butter:
Lately I've been buying "bricks" of "Let's Do Organic" Coconut Cream. This is the exact same thing as coconut butter in the expensive glass jars, but it only costs $2.99. And to portion it out for easier hot chocolate making (during the winter my coconut butter is solid as a rock!) I pour the warmed, kneaded coconut butter into ice cube molds. When they are solid, I pop them out and store them in a large jar. Currently I have a cute fish-shaped ice cube mold from Ikea, so I just pop a "fish" in my mug with the cocoa and sweetener.

When in a pinch for ease/time, Swiss Miss makes a "diet" cocoa which is lower carb than their sugar free one, but still about 6 carbs. I found that another hot drink that keeps me satisfied over the winter is heating up 1-1.5 cups of SF vanilla almond milk in the microwave and adding DaVinci SF Chai tea concentrate! 1 cup= 40cals/3.5g fat/2g carbs/1g protein. So good!

Never occured to me that cocoa powder has carbs! I just checked and the kind I have has 2 grams carbs, 1 gram fiber per teaspoon. Oh well. I have like 6 containers of it, so I'll use it sparingly.

Lately I've been making hot cocoa by heating up some unsweetened chocolate almond milk (Almond Breeze), adding some liquid splenda, and occassionally adding some additional heavy cream.

Hi everyone, newby alert! lol

I know this is an old post but I found it via google!

I'm very new to low carb and was studying packets today and both of the cocoas I have are minus net carbs, is that possible? Cadburys was 10.5g carbs, 12.1g fibre & Asda (UK Walmart!) was a frankly unbelievable 8.7g carbs, 28.2g fibre! Has anyone come across this before? (Asking before I switch to a dry cocoa powder diet ;) lol)

In the UK, the fiber is already subtracted from the total carb count, so you're already looking at net carbs.

Thanks for replying :) I'd never heard of that so went off to check & compare some random products on US & UK sites, and both ways appear to be used here, very stupid and confusing :(
