Explanation for the 'whoosh' effect

Here is a post from another board which is an explanation of the ‘whoosh’ effect. I had read something similar a few years ago. This was written by Lyle McDonald, who has written several books about body-building, fat loss, ketogenic diets, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fat cell water content and fat loss
Ok, finally stickying this stupid post with some very minor modifications.
It's something I've mentioned over the years, an assertion that my exercise physiology professor had made wrt: fat loss.
Note that under normal conditions, fat cells contain ~90% triglycerides and ~10% other stuff where other stuff includes some water, the cellular machinery that makes all the stuff that fat cells make and a couple of other things that I'm forgetting right now. Basically, fat cells do not normally contain much water.
He told us that, after triglycerides were removed from the cell, that the fat cells refilled with water in the short-term, eventually the body dropped that water and the fat loss 'became evident' (a goofy way for me to try to describe when the fat loss actually shows up on calipers, one of those dumb Tanita scales, or visually).
If nothing else, this gives a plausible mechanism for the non-linear fat loss that is so often seen. Folks will do everything right for weeks with no results. then overnight, something happens and the scale drops a bunch. Many diet newsgroups and forums refer to this as a 'whoosh' which often follows a stall.
A couple of empirical data points in support of this: people who use tanita scales have often reported that it will tell them that their BF has gone up right before a 'whoosh' occurs and a big drop. This suggests something goofy is going on with water balance.
Another is that fat often gets squishy (suggesting a change in what's in there) prior to a drop in skinfolds/ improvement in appearance.
I looked for research on the topic for a decade to no success. I made up my own plausible mechanism having to do with glycerol levels in the fat cell (glycerol is hydrophilic); if fatty acids were being lost at a greater proportion than glycerol, this mght explain how water is attracted into the fat cell. Except that, usually, glycerol and fatty acid are released in about the proportion you'd expect (3:1 FFA:glycerol).
edit: For what very little it's worth, Colgan mentions something similar in OPtimum Sports Nutrition, something about the body 'tracking' glycerol to keep track of fat stores. It's possible that the research on this is just pre-medline. Or he and my teacher just pulled it out of the old ass.
A couple of years back, a paper came out showing an increase in water content of visceral fat with dieting. First semi-direct data I've seen. I don't recall the mechanism being mentioned but I may not have ever read the full paper.
Thanks for posting this!
It really makes sense, and confirms what so many of us experience.
A lot of people puzzled about eating clean on plan, yet not seeming to lose, would really benefit from reading this!
Not to get too technical, but this is also what is referred to on these boards as "jiggle-poof" fat, yes? When I first heard it, I had not experienced it and couldn't think what people meant by it, but now I have experienced it first hand. I believe you are right on track with the fat loss and cells etc.
Yeah, I've heard that softening stage of fat called "Jiggly Puff" or something like that. (Sounds like that blobby little Pokemon character!) People say the fat areas get all loose-looking for a while before it shrinks.
Thank you so much for the info. It does get discouraging when you eat clean and you've stalled. Now I can put my finger on the reason. I've been going through this the past week ..... grrrr.
This is quite an interesting theory. What I know of Lyle I very much respect. And it makes perfect logical sense. I'm surprised this phenomenon has not been researched before.
Thanks for bringing the post over here.
OMG!!! Am I ever glad I found this board!! last night I went to bed very depressed and hardly slept. After I took my shower, I tried on a pair of jeans i have been trying to get into for a while now...well, my muffin top looked kinda gross...it was all soft and looked like bread dough...I would pinch it up and it would kinda stay, almost like playdough. I went to ask DH to look at something and not laugh at me...I showed him what my belly did and asked him if he thought it was normal...his explaination...it was just xtra skin from the pregnancies and all loose and mushy from losing almost 30 pounds..his though, the only way to get rid of it was surgery...I went to bed depressed, thinking i would have this playdough belly for ever since I am too scared for a tummy tuck or abdominaplasty or whatever its called...had 2 c-sections and that is all the cutting and pasting for me!!!
then I read this!!! amazing is all I can say...this is the jiggly-puff-belly!! i will know more tomorrow or sunday when i weigh myself I gues...
I LOVE THESE BOARDS!!!!!!!!THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!
My loose belly and hip skin is definatley not attractive. I had to consider whether or not losing more weight was worth it as it was going to just get worse. I'm going to have to have a thigh lift and tummy tuck to be happy with my body. This loose skin is not going anywhere. I've already begun the discussion with my dh. I want to lose about 20 more pds first.
Thank you
Well, I still won't know until Monday if I had a weight-loss Whoosh .... but I do know I definately had a Fat-loss Whoosh! Yesterday I wore a sweater that used to be tight and confining. I had it in the back of my closet. So, I decided to try it on just to see ....
It fits wonderfullY! It fits around my breasts w/o smooshing them, the sleeves are very loose where I used to not be able to wear because of the tightness, and then it flows down over my belly with a wonderful looseness! I hate clothes that confine so I now love my sweater!
Who cares about a weight-loss Whoosh? Not me anymore. LOL I'll take a fat-loss whoosh over it any day!
Good morning folks, I have been watching the jiggl-puff in my thighs all week. It looked like big fluffy marshmallows were growing just below the skin. I've been dry brushing them and after lathering on body lotion and gently massaging them. This morning I see that my thighs are much smoother. As soon as someone comes I'm going to get weighed and see the results. Weight loss is an adventure, a thrilling unpredictable adventure, and if you do it with a smile and don't rely on the stupid numbers on the scale everything works its way out in the end. When someone drops six pounds overnight you would expect to hear that they were up peeing all night but usually that doesn't happen either. It is magic and we are the macicians, so keep smiing and allow our bodies to do what ever they needs to do and we will get to our goal. Love Carole
