How much is "a cup"

Fitday lists "a cup" of raw grapefruit as being 18.58 carbs. I really really really want some grapefruit, and I'm willing to spend the carbs to get it, but I'd like to know how much I'm burning of my daily amount. How do you figure what a cup is?

In my LFL book it lists grapefruit as 10 carbs for 1/2 a small fruit.

Go to Wal Mart, Target or KMart and get a measuring cup set. About $2. Get a scale while you're there. Another $5.

1 cup is what is inside the 1 "cup" loosely without piling or spilling over. It's not much for grapefruit. I love grapefruit and enjoy it often now that I'm at goal.

Beans, it's not a matter of spending carbs, it's matter of where your calories are at and how fast you want to lose. Ketosis and all.

If you don't mind losing slower (and many don't), have at it!

I think groups like Weight Watchers will tell you you can eyeball it by figuring it's what fits in your cupped hands held together. Not to overflowing.

If you need a real measuring cup Kimmer's right. You can get a set of cups (and spoons) for about $1-2 at places like Wal-Mart, Dollar stores, Big Lots and any store having "Dollar Days" type specials.

If you pick the other serving options in fitday, it shows:

a small grapefruit (3.5 inches diameter) = 16.16 carbs, 2.2 fiber
a medium grapefruit (4 inches diameter) = 20.68 carbs, 2.82 fiber
a large grapefruit (4.5 inches diameter) = 26.83 carbs, 3.65 fiber

I know my body and I know exactly how many carbs I can handle a day and still lose. So, I have an allowance and it does work that for me.

No need to get huffy. You asked for opinions.

She didn't ask for opinions, she asked for ideas about measuring something she planned to eat!

Anyway, according to the USDA nutrient database, 100 grams of raw red or pink Florida grapefruit:

37 calories, 7.5 carbs, 1.1 fiber. 28 grams = 1 ounce.

HTH!

I love ruby red grapefruit - I often eat half of one as "dessert" after lunch, with no problems as far as weight, cravings, or blood sugar issues.

Enjoy!

If you want to measure an exact one cup of something like fruit - here's an old Weight Watchers trick. Get a TWO cup measuring cup. Fill it with water up to the ONE cup line. Start adding pieces of the fruit until the water line has moved up to the TWO cup line. Drain off the water and now you have exactly one cup of fruit.

Hey Turtle, that's a great idea...new to me anyway. I'll admit, I'm not much of a measurer or counter...I just eat half a grapefruit and give the other half to DH.

My mistake.

I just figured that someone who knows exactly how many carbs she can eat and still lose would know exactly how to measure the food, otherwise how has she been getting exact carb counts?

Don't know, don't care - Beans asked for help with a problem, I tried to help. To me, that's the beauty of these forums - asking for help and hopefully getting some!

Because so far I've only been eating things I knew how to measure. And I wasn't huffy. I was just a little annoyed at the condescension. No big whoop.
