I just took a moment to read your story. WOW! What a lot of progress you made! I love the approach you took to figure things out and work on yourself, step by step. I also like how you analyzed situations and came up with solutions (like not wanting to exercise in public, so you walked in the woods). I need to take a similar approach to get over some of my own obstacles.

Thanks for sharing. You truly are an inspiration, and your weight loss and years of maintenance are just amazing!

Thanks for sharing your amazing story Pauline. I loved reading it.
I wonder how is your maintenance period going? Did you change your eating and workout plans after reaching your goal? Did you experience any gain after the goal? How stabilized was/is your weight?
Thanks.

Cheers,

Hi Pearl! Thanks! As far as maintenance, since 2006 when I reached goal (finally decided on 128 lbs), I was going up and down in weight every single year. I would gain 10-15 pounds and take half a year to get it off again. It was a far cry from 108 lbs. I could still say I had kept off the initial 90 pounds since 2004, but still, not a good thing! lol!

I think part of it had to do with not really commiting to coming up with my own personal guidelines for maintaining. Christmas time 2009 I decided I was fed up with wishy washy maintenance. I had 15 pounds to take off again! I got those off by June 2010 and for the past year have maintained, pretty much within a 3 pound range! I think I am more solidly here now and can continue this way as I know what it is I need to do to be here - having figured it out. My "equation for success" is:

3-4 workouts a week (20 min cardio, 40 min strength training*)
2000 calories / 60-75 net carbs (I can go up to 100 net carbs without ill effects, but I get hungrier)

I can have liquor and wine, etc. in moderation (no sugary drinks, all carbs counted). I leave carby foods for times when we are eating out only - and I will pick a single thing at a meal. Either some breading, a single slice of bread and butter, a single portion of onion rings, or potato, etc. I do not do sugar at all - I always bring a sugarfree sweet with me.

I still will carry some lc pitas or tortillas with me to a restaurant if there is a chance I'll need to have a sandwich for want of other options (eating semi-vegetarian lc is much more challenging than regular lc), etc etc etc .. On vacation, I just stay active and eyeball my food and portions to loosely stay within those guidelines .. and it seems to keep me in that 3 pound range!

* During weightloss I generally worked out 5 days a week:
4x: 40 min cardio, 40 min weights (upper and lower body split)
1x: 60 min cardio
As you can see I cut way back on that!

hth!

Pauline

Binges

Pauline-- What a fascinating story --I intend to share it right away. You are a very good writer and the honesty comes thru.

I have had a lifetime of binging (and vomiting) and find your discussion most interesting. Your binges and mine just stop on low carb maintenance.

Do you have pre diabetes or a family history of type 2 diabetes?
I actually feel awful after big sweets --ie cake and ice cream-- did you?

Again thanks for the help and advice. Love your introspection. Roger

Rog I still have some binges in response to certain things ... but can still maintain despite them .. when it happens, I am now able to "close the book" so to speak, just proceed as before on maintenance level behaviors - no recriminations, no diet days afterward, etc. My weight will go up about 2-2.5 lbs and come down within a week or two of normal eating!

I imagine I probably did have pre-diabetes and yes, there are type 2 diabetes (from obesity) in my family .. but hopefully we are kicking that pattern for the next generation! yayyyyyy!

Wow ..TaDa that was some read, even after all this time you are still maintaining, and well done for that, I am a long way off my target, i have set my target realistically but when i get there i will set another one.

I too can relate to everything you have told us, even on the thursday i started my plan, by the sat i had lost 5lbs on the at night i totally binged out and ended up putting 4lbs back on, and havent doent that again, I have never been to focused in my life to want to do this.

I go to the gym 3 times a week do roughly 35 mns cardio and 15 mins light weights just to help tone up my very weak and limp muscles. I walk to work (weather permitting) its 2.2 miles and i manage that in 35mns twice a week (depends on my shifts (backs)) on a day shift i do a mile walk in my 30 min lunch roughly 17mns.

I have dusted off my bike and even used that today..i am enjoying what i am doing, i have noticed the past 3 days i have stayed the same weight but need to get the tape measure out as i know i am losing inches my clothes are telling me.

I said earlier i binge eat too, thats why i am the way i am......last saturday evening i was in the house on my own, i wanted chips, curry, lager...cake you name it..so because i had those thoughts i went on my treadmill for 10 mns to get the idea out my mind. It worked, I used to run ... loved running, i have done 2 half marathons before i had kids and piled on the pounds, as it stands today i cant run, i cant stand my jelly belly bouncing more than my b00bies, and also because of my weight i has stress incontinence, i have noticed that getting slightly better.

I am hoping i can (i will) keep up the good work, even though my daughter is getting married in 2 weeks time, i may just have a few vodka and diet cokes that day not beer or lager, and may just be picky at the food, lucky for me i have my sister doing the food, so can let her know what i disire..!!

Michelle it sounds like you are doing great! The vodka and diet coke sounds like a great idea!

Don't worry about 3 days on the scale!! Seriously, it is the long stretches of time you want to watch .. keep up the great work! and do not stress if a binge should happen. Wake up the next day and start the day eating and exercising (or resting) exactly as you would have had the binge not happened .. that is the only way to deal with it on a longterm basis - i still have binge times - I am still able to maintain using that strategy.

I know what you mean..2 weeks ago i went out with my daughter and her friends on her hen night, we went for Indian curry, i had chicken dupiaza and chips, I was worried about it, i ate all of the chicken and half the chips, the next day i didnt weigh myself thinking i would get a false reading anyways, but went straight back onto my plan, i weighed myself on the monday or tuesday 2-3 days after and found my weight hadnt gained, (it may have i just chose not to go on the scales) but it gave me the sense that i managed ok on my night out, but i know in my own heart not to do that often, i havent done anything like that since so my next stage would be the wedding, then in sept my anniversary, nov my b/day then christmas....so i have little challenges to get through, I am sure i can manage with the help and support from my hubby and these boards.

I am crying after reading your story. So many feelings I can identify with. I have an emotional attachment to food. I'd love to hear more about the "carb ladder" and how and when you [specifics] of it.

Pauline.... Wow! After all these years, I had never read your story. Had gotten bits and pieces from other post along the way and from some of the advice and support you have given me, but ...Wow! As I have told you many times, you are one of my heros, but not until tonight did I realize just how much of one you are really are. Guess we are all kinda consumed in our own battle and we see people like you, that are where you were when I met you, and never knew the total history of what you endured to get to where you have.

I know I have told you this before, but from the bottom of my heart, I want to tell you how much your friendship and support has meant to me in my battle to win control of my life. I am so proud of you and happy for you. My journey continues as well, but rest assured I will prevail!

Awww thanks guys It has been five years since I posted this thread and it always strikes me with the tiniest bit of embarrassment when it gets bumped - (although I do have it in my sig for when people ask me questions about my experiences).

Robman, it still seems like a fantasy that I could be where I am right now. I feel a lot like an imposter, still, lol! And, Clanger, It is still a lot of work, I won't lie - staying this weight (130 this morning) actually takes the same amount of work as the danged weightloss, but at least no one looking at me walking down the street needs to know that, lol! it can be my own private thing ..

First of all...congratulations on your self-discovery and rising above and beyond to find your true self. Your descriptions of your feelings and thoughts were very familiar and a few times I felt like you were talking about me.

I loved your eloquence and ability to convey what your feelings. So easy to read and drew me right into your story and I was able to feel your pain, frustration, anger, joy.... you are a gifted writer!
