Blaine Jelus Update - Low carb chef on Fit TV

Does anyone remember Blaine Jelus? I was just watching a rerun of his low carb cooking show on FitTV and was wondering what happened to him. I went onto the FIT TV forum and read that after his show was axed he felt very badly and put some of the weight back on. Plus he suffered a nasty knee injury from a fishing trip which he is recovering from, and hinders physical activity. This was a double whammy, because as fans of the show will remember, Blaine was starting to get a lot more active after he started losing weight.

A friend of his posted this information on the FIT tv forum; saying Blaine cannot post on the FIT TV forum because of some contractual issues. It was also said that Blaine has turned to a more moderate approach, the glycemic index, and that he is hoping to start a new show using the glycemic index as a weight loss approach.

I am posting this because I know many of us enjoyed his show and wondered why he disappeared off the face of the earth.

I hope Blaine recovers and does start a new show on the glycemic index; I go one further - I now believe following a low glycemic load eating plan is the way to go!

It's depressing enough for any of us to fall off our diets, but when you're in the public eye, I imagine it must be especially humiliating. I hope if Blaine ever reads this he knows he's not alone, and we would love to see him in a new tv show. His cooking and personality were so dynamic!

Atkins is based on the glycemic index. That is why you add in foods as you step up the carb latter.

I feel bad for him. I liked his show, and I tried a couple of his recipes, but I had to modify them to make them lower fat. Once past induction most people have to think about that. His recipes were very high in fat and calories.

Julia, I think he realizes that too; and besides more and more nutritionists are abandoning low carb for low glycemic index/glycemic load eating plans.

I believe in the post I read, his friend said Jules became interested in glycemic index because it is more reasonable. Maybe he wanted more variety - on these plans you can eat way more fruits and veggies than on Atkins. Plus there's no counting carbs.

Who knows, maybe he started South Beach? At any rate, his recipes were very creative and inspired; I really enjoyed his cooking show.

Thanks for posting this. I wondered what happened to him after his show. I've never made any of his recipes but they always looked really good and extremely high fat like Julia said.

I really enjoyed his show. I noticed on one of the episodes he had child safety locks on his cabinets - It made me laugh.

I really enjoyed the show too. It's a shame that he was just one more victim of the fading popularity of low carb.

That really stinks! I so love Blaine, and I liked his recipes/show too
Just thought he was such a cutey, and loved when he weighed at the end of each show and lost he was so happy. Will be sadly missed but hopefully he will come back.

I liked the show but I must say his falling off the wagon over its cancellation has made me lose all repsect for him.

If a little adversity was enough to end his resolve, then he never had much resolve to begin with.

Thanks for the update on Blaine. I enjoyed watching his show, though I can't say I ever tried his recipes. I'd like it if he came back with a low glycemic load food plan. That would be great and helpful to many of us. Gosh, Kajun DC - I sure wouldn't be so quick to say you'd loose respect for someone who fell off plan or went backwards. Just goes to show he's human --- just like us, (and so are you Kajun DC.) Have a great day!

I loved his show, I would love if he did a new show. I have been following a program at my sisters church for about 12 weeks now and it is a low glycemic index diet which to me seemed just like the atkins diet only now my meat portion is controlled too.

Yep, I'm human too. And if I fell off the wagon (which won't happen because my resolve is just too high) and gained all my weight back, I'd lose all respect for myself as well.

You have to be careful if you set yourself up as a role model, which he did. It's a poor example to set for his kids, not to mention other low carbers.

Anyway, JMHO.

I'm sorry to hear that his show was canceled but I'm also sorry to hear that he let that change in his life set him back as far as his weightloss journey. Yes, I know it happens to many people but I really wanted to believe that he had completely adopted this lifestyle and wasn't going to be sidetracked by anything.

Either way, I wish him the best!

I personally think a REALISTIC roll model is the most beneficial.

If he "fell off the wagon", well -- he's like the majority of people out there.

However, if he finds a way to get back up onto the wagon, he's a much better roll model to adults AND children than someone who likes to give the impression that making mistakes and struggling is worthy of disrespect.

Blaine's Show

Well I too am sorry that he's gone. I used some of his recipes and enjoyed them. The walnut chocolate layer cake was most useful. I made it and sliced 12 pieces and froze them so as to have a piece later in the evening each night.
But I really liked the guy. He wasn't full of himself. I did download the videos and recipies that I wanted from the website so I do have them.
Until you know the details of what happened I wouldn't be so quick to jump on him, though

Davey, I remember his show, and I liked him a lot too. I would never criticize him, no matter what he weighs now. As for all of us, life sometimes gets in the way. It certainly did for me.

Actually his cooking show was my most favorite cooking show ever. He had a great way of relating to others; it's a shame he's not in the public eye anymore. He is so likeable.

I do wonder what happened to him though.

I watched his show too until our cable company moved FitTV to a channel I can't receive anymore. I thought his recipes sounded good, except for his excessive use of soy flour.

That's sorta the way I feel. If he abandoned LC because they cancelled his show, then how is he different from anyone else who profitted off the "fad" ?

I watch Blaine all the time. I guess Satellite TV has it's rewards! I didn't know those shows were that old, though.

I do take issue with his excessive use of soy. What would be cool is if he came back with a new updated show that uses coconut flour, almond meal, flaxmeal and some other low carb flour alternatives. I can't do soy and as most of us are finding out, not many should.

Man, I really love/loved him. I had read this on the net a little while ago and my DH and I were so disappointed. We cheered for him when he would weigh in at the end of the show. I love his personality.

I guess what bothers me the most is that he had a show and said he was so sold on the LC way of life and now, I guess, he doesn't feel like that? I can appreciate his struggle, I mean, H E L L O-O, and I wish him the best. I just feel like stuff like this makes my WOE look like it's gonna be a failure in my friend's/family's eyes. You know, just one more person in the world announcing that LC is too extreme and can't be done.

Well, if he does the GI, it isn't low carb but it certainly is LOWER carb(compared to the average American). And isn't maintenance on Atkins pretty much eating like GI. You're adding back good carbs and they are usually the ones low on the GI.
