Ketosis = Headache

I keep hearing everyone being excited about being in deep Ketosis - when I get there I get an horrible headache that wont seem to go away - and I don't feel all that great. Am I not drinking enough water or taking the right kind of vitamins?

Hi,

Yes, I get the headache too and also some body aches and just a general unwell feeling. I think that is a normal part of getting into Ketosis. It's not called the "Atkins Flu" for nothing.

It goes away in a couple of days, after your body has adjusted to using ketones as fuel instead of glucose. Hang tough and take asprin as needed and you should be feeling tip-top in a couple of days.

Hope this helps a little.

Chris

It will go away after 2 days or so. I just take my naproxen. Its part of the induction flu. I go through it weekly since I do M/E mon-fri.
Grats on reaching ketosis!! The extra energy, and not craving is worth a headache to me! But I had a head injury a few years ago, so headaches are pretty common for me.
Maybe take something and lay down for a while?
Hope your feeling better soon.

Thanks for the advise - I keep trying the M/E fast - get a terrible headache after a day or so and I quit - eat a bunch of vegtables. Mabe I'll try to hang on for a little longer and see if the headache goes away.

Yep, need to just go through it. Take asprine (probably will not help but its worth a try), get extra sleep, and drink a little more water. Once you get over the hump its soo worth it.

I am trying to get into deep ketosis too on M/E and have a small headache now that u mentioned it. Today makes the third day of attempting. Hopefully by tommarrow I will be all the way there. I lost 50 pounds since June 05 on M/E, needless to say I really like it!

Wow! 50 lbs is very impressive - I just can't start to get the scale moving down again and I'm very tired of the Thunder thighs....... I'm definitely going to try to stick with the M/E fast - today is officially day one. Wish me luck.

Good luck! You can do it!

Did you give up caffeine? I'm the headach queen, my hubby went on induction and had a caffeine headache.. OUCH! 1 cup of coffee cured it.. but he was in ALOT of pain until we discovered that could be the cause.

Eating LC can cause an electrolyte imbalance due to your body giving up it's water stores.

Anyway, try drinking some Propel or Crystal Light Hydration to see if that helps. Also, taking calcium, magnesium and potassium can be helpful in solving headaches. I cured my migraines this way. I take 500-1000 mg calcium, 500-1000 mg magnesium and just under 200 mg of potassium per day. NO headaches except for the occasional sinus headache.

This works for ME, but please check with your doctor or pharmacist. I'm am not doctor. Too much potassium can be dangerous, however the dosage I take is only about 6% of the RDA. Good luck!

I was very headachy on the Saturday following starting induction on a Wednesday, and didn't feel so hot on Friday evening either. Keto stick showed purple on Friday - it's down to pink/dark pink now, even though I didn't increase carbs. Maybe from fluid differences or something. I planned it on purpose so if I did get hit with induction flu it would probably happen on a weekend - not fun for the weekend, but better than feeling my yuckiest while at work. Tylenol, lots of fluids, and a potassium tablet (just one per day) helped enough that I could run errands and do laundry.

By Sunday it was milder and gone by Monday. I'm really not comfortable with the idea of eating more carbs to make it go away; for me it goes away fast enough on its own not to risk sabotaging the plan. I'd rather suffer through one day with headaches and fatigue that aren't any worse than how I'd feel when eating off-plan anyway.

Yeah - that!

Shecan: I re-inducted last week by going VLC, and ended up with the Headache-from-You_Know-Where and dizzy spells.

So I ended up eating one nice salad, heaped with clean proteins, a few tsps. of grated cheese and bacon, topped with ranch dressing - and felt immediately better. I just feel better with 30 carbs a day, so that's my personal aim.

But, yes, it's Induction Flu, and all the advice shared by others is 'spot' on! KUTG!

Don't know. I've never used keto sticks. From what I've gathered, they can be pretty misleading. If you drink a lot of water, they may only be slightly purple even though you're in deep ketosis. Since I do drink lots of water, I've never wasted my time or $$ buying ketosticks.

Just follow Atkins or Protein Power...or other LC plan and you should be fine!

When you lower your carbs to a severe level, it shocks your body which is unnecessary. You can lower carbs gradually and still see the results, until your body can manufacture the necessary enzymes to burn fat which takes up to six months to reach its intensity. Until it does, you don't have to feel ill. You can safely consume 150 grams of carbs and gradually ease off each week so that your body can adjust slowly, but you don't need to be doing 10-30 grams per day. Ketosis is over-rated. Don't focus on that.

Some people can do that, but some can't. 150g of carbs is much too high for someone with insulin resistance or carb addiction, and getting into ketosis quickly can make the carb withdrawal last a few days instead of a few weeks. I don't think I could stick out the intense hunger that 75-150g of carbs brings on for more than a few days; knocking down to 20 felt lousy over that weekend, but that part was over fast.

I feel your pain, I just woke up at 430 am with a killer headache. Ate a bit of protein so I could take some Advil. Yesterday I dropped into lower carb, I guess. Weight loss has been slow this summer and I am going to give it a boost.
Miss M, I just read your blog, enjoyed it, and it motivated me to stick to this even with the headache.
I have been having way too many nuts, too much dairy. Here I go, headache and all.....

Headaches for me every time. The first 2-3 days of getting into ketosis I feel like I've been hit by a bus...headaches, diarrhea, body aches, lethargy, etc. The 3-4th day...I feel fantastic and do from then on out.

Hey Ryan. I totally understand what you mean. Most people when they approach one of these low carb programs are already consuming so many carbs, it could be in the hundreds.

If I am consuming 300 grams per day, cutting that in half would be a start for many.

Over the years I have heard so many stories of cutting down to what Atkins proposed, which wipes people out so much, many wind up going back to their original way of eating until they get the courage up to try 'induction'.

By gradually lowering while concentrating on exercise and lowering calories, it becomes a slow process towards that same goal without the stress of feeling sick and tired.

I know there are those like yourself who have been able to do it but a more gradual process may suit many who don't have the endurance to make it.

Congrads for getting past the initial part of that. I admire those who can do it.

Pete

Why not eat the m/e with one vegetable a day.. I never have experieced low carb headaches.. I keep my fat over 60%, and drink 14 glasses of water a day.. hydration is important, as well as a multivitamin.

Been keeping a headache every day for over a week, AND I had carbs (lots) one day. Could it be dehydration? Sick of taking Ibuprophen every single day, sometimes twice because the headaches are severe.
