I am so glad that the newbiesite is still a helpful tool for everyone... I am thinking of adding some new updates. I wanted to hear from you all on what you think would be helpful to lowcarbers. Thanks for any input you can give me!!

Finding a LC friendly physician?
As someone new to this site, how would I go about finding a local physician who is amenable the the LC WOE? I'm trying to find someone in the Hartford CT area.
Health Issues area? LC local friends area? Any other suggestions? BTW this is the best LC resource anywhere! Thanks. |

Hi Learninglowcarb!!!
What I did was to call around and ask in advance. You can just talk to the receptionist and ask what the doctors stance is on lowcarbing and if you decide to do that program would he help you by following your progress and doing your blood work and vitals. Usually they know if they are pro or against lowcarb plans. I am really glad you love this site... It is the best out there by far. Any other questions feel free to ask!!! cheri ![]() |

Really great site I used it to plan out much of my program along the a book actually a pdf someone sent me called.
The Ketogenic Diet: a complete guide for the dieter and practitioner. by Lyle McDonald. I am not sure how or even if it is legal but I still have the pdf if it would be of any use as a link or even personally. It contains some great info on how the keto diets got their origin and the great health benefits from regulating blood sugar to stopping seizures in prepubesant adolesents. Thanks so much for the site it is awsome. |

A Newcomer Once Again !!
![]() ![]() ![]() I'm new to this site. Once again, I am back on Atkins. I lost alot of weight last time I was on the Atkins program. But I let people talk me out of it because of all the negative comments I was getting. Not this time !! I have had a good week, and I intend to stick with what I know is good for me. I have a goal in mind and no one is going to change it this time. I love this website. There is so much valuable information here. I'm glad you guys are here. Many thanks to everyone on this site |

I have a question and am not sure if I'm missing something in the Atkins book or what....
I'm in the induction phase and know that I shouldn't have more than 20g or carbs a day. Why does it matter where the carbs come from-that is to say why do they have to come from cheese and veggies as opposed to nuts or low carb bread? |

The veggies are more nutrient dense and provide fiber. Also the bread will have additives. You will have better success using "natural" from the earth foods.
As for nuts the carbs can add up rather quickly. |

Cheri, I am new, just started Atkins on Oct. 5th and have found your site to be fantastic.
I love your name, that is also my daughter's name. It was a family last name, I just changed the spelling and is pronounced like the fruit. How do you pronounce yours? Thanks for taking the time to provide so much good information. Jean |

New to site
Cheri,
Nice site you have created. I have been an avid fan of Atkins for a long time. I still have plenty of questions. I am extremly OCD when on this approach. I live and breath by the scale and the color of my strips and how my clothes fit. I am not happy unless the strips are moderate or better at all times of the day. I go through about a bottle of 50 strips a week. I have only used this approach as a weight loss tool and cannot seem to force myself to go to the next step. First time on the diet about 5 years ago SW was 270 finished at 203. Felt great. But gained back about 40lbs of that and seem to hold at that weight no matter what I eat or do. I have been off and on for the last 5 years. I am now back on the induction started at 244 and down to 222.6 this morning in just under two weeks. GW is 190. Man this diet works great for me and after the first few days I always feel great. Anyway is it true about the strips, the more purple the strips the more fat you are burning? (you did answer this somewhat on your web page) And will sugar alcohols still abosorb like regular sugar. Glad to see all of your success it is a big motivator for me. Thanks and keep it up. Kemp |

Thank you Cheri
Hello Cheri,
I have just read your Newbie Web Page, I have just joined LCF and was very confused about what I had to do or how to get started, your advice was just what I needed to get me started. I did try the Atkins diet when it first came out but I was besieged by friends telling me that the diet was not safe and well you know the rest so I stopped doing the diet. My weight has been up and down for around 30 years as I was using low calorie diets, you know the drill, lose some, gain some, lose some, gain some, and frankly I am sick of those. I have come to a conclusion that I am fatter than I have ever been in my life and that low calorie diets will eventually make you fatter, so I am going to try The Atkins diet once again, and my friends and family are simply not going to know about it. Thanks once again Cheri for your no nonsence approach in your writings regarding this diet, I am going to give it my best shot. Cheers Jessie... |

I think that most people that say the Atkins diet is not good for you are saying it because they don't really know what the diet is all about.. They are going by what they have heard. Most people don't even realize that we eat veggies on the atkins plan.. I eat more veggies when lowcarbing then I did while not dieting. If people are giving you negative opinions you can always just tell them you are watching your sugar intake and trying to eat more healthy... that usually satisfies the people that don't really know what we eat... but it does work.. that is for sure.. I am over 130 pounds down now. ![]() Good luck on your weight loss.. if you have any questions feel free to ask!! cheri ![]()

Hi Kemp.. I am so sorry I didn't see this until now.. I hope that you are having continued success with your weight loss efforts. About the strips. Some people are in ketosis and won't show on the strips at all.. and if you are very hydrated (drinking lots of water) your strips might not be as dark purple but you are indeed burning those ketones... Also if you are eating more fat in your diet the strips might be reading that as well.. so please don't take a lot of stock in the strips.. I know it is good confirmation that you are doing the diet right but try to cut down using them to just once a day okay? Sometimes if you eat off plan it won't show on the strips until the next day anyway. Here is a link to a page on the newbie site that really explains the strips very well.. It might help you as well.. http://www.geocities.com/cherilynn82...onestrips.html As far as sugar alcohol it can interfere in your staying in ketosis so use it at a minimum okay? The Atkins center has said that 3 packets a day is good.. remember that the packets have 1 carb in each one... The sugar alcohols in processed food have even less.. but try to eat cleanly and stick with meat and veggies and an occassional diet soda if you like. You can also have coffee or tea but again.. try to only use up to 3 packets of splenda a day. I hope that answers your questions.. if you have any others feel free to ask.. if I am not answering quick enough feel free to PM me or email me at cherilynn8@hotmail.com Take care and keep us posted on how you are doing! cheri |

Hi....is there a newbie introduction type thread anywhere here? I signed up about a year ago but this is the first time Ive had the courage to post...but I dont know where to start. Everyone seems so nice, but its hard for newbies to take that first step sometimes.

I'm a newbie
Thanks you for all the information. Today is my 39th birthday and I want to start a new way of life. I do not want to go into this year of my life complaining about my weight when I can do something about it. I want to feel good about myself but most of all, I want to be healthy.
I am ready to change one day at a time!!! ![]() |
