Lou Ana coconut oil from walmart

are the benefits the same as from the expensive kind? It was only two dollars
and something at walmart and it comes in a big jar. Is it processed with
chemicals? Is that one of the ones that smells like coconut?

Look for words like "virgin" or "RBD". Virgin is supposed to be better because it is not "precessed". RBD is refined and bleached and goes through a heating process, then filtering through clay, then a chemical bleaching using lye. Don't let lye scare you, lots of foods are processed with it - including Lutefisk (yummmm!) . RBD is usually made from a cheaper dried coconut product called copra.

Most of the sites I have seen say RBD has all the same health properties as virgin pressed but less flavor or smell. Most call it "bland". Although they say it is "OK" reading between the lines they all seem to favor virgin oil.

Depends on how "natural" you want your foods to be and how much you want to pay extra for that.

I use the LouAna and it doesn't have any particular smell or taste. I used it in some banana bread I make for my kids and they said it was wonderful. I also use it sometimes in my flax muffins and last night I fried some pork chops in it. It was very good!

The LouAna I have is sort of a grey color and pretty much tasteless. At the Health Food store yesterday, I purchased the Garden of Life (extra virgin) type which is a pure white color and has a slight coconut taste. I like it much better than the LouAna.

After seeing a post about the health benefits for various conditions (including Crohns which I have) I decided to start taking a couple T a day. Now I am maintainng but good grief, after a couple of days taking it, I dropped three lbs. BUT, I feel great!

Hmmm, guess I will take a t a day now.

I use the LouAnna brand of coconut oil to cook with. The virgin coconut oil is too expensive to cook with. I take 1TBSP of the VCO 2 times a day. The coconut oil is healthier for cooking than other oils. You do have to be careful not to cook with it on high. It tends to burn quickly and smoke if you use high heat. It doesn't change the taste of the food either. I recommend the LouAnna for all your cooking - except deep frying. Hope this helps

I have emailed LouAna before and you can find it here somewhere...but here is part of the info they gave me:

Our coconut is refined but our industry does not use terms like virgin. It is not hydrogenated and is transfatty free.

I asked how it is expressed and didn't get an answer...

It's so cheap, it really make you wanna use it but I don't know what to think and as of yet (a few months down the road), I have never ingested it; only spread a little on the tops of my hands once.

The cheaper coconut oils are usually processed from copra, an inferior product. After seeing pictures of copra I'll never eat anything other than virgin coconut oil!!

I looked in Walmart by the oils and in the vitamin/health food section, but couldn't find any. I finally asked and the clerk told me she didn't know, but if they had it it would be in the COSMETIC section. I took it they never had any. I had to get mine elsewhere - the brand I got was 'Omega Nutrition'.

The clerk doesn't know what she's talking about. It's for cooking, it wouldn't be with cosmetics.

I found mine in Wal_mart (gotta be a super center, not a reg wal-mart) right along with all the other cooking oils and shortenings. It comes in a big white plastic jar with a green lid.

Sequim, I have tried a lot of things; frog legs, alligater chislick, turtle soup, etc., BUT I refuse to try LutefisK! (or pickled Herring)

I LOVE Lutefisk! My husband won't touch it, though. We only have it about once a year and I do have to admit I have to have lefse with it, too, although the carb count must be through the roof! I make lefse (once a year) and it's mostly made of white flour and potatoes!!

Mahyde.......

When you said you started "taking a couple of T per day", how exactly did you mean? Did you take like medicine, mix it in something or what? Thanks so much for any reply!

First time I took it in coffee (not a good idea for me anyway) and the other T straight up. I like the coconut taste though. It definitely curbs your apetite.

I am having trouble sleeping through the night though, am going to cut back to a 1/2 teaspoon a day.

I found it yesterday and bought it. I don't really care about the quality too much, but do you think it will have the same health benefits as the more expensive kind?

The jury really seems to be out on this kind of CO, and I actually got a response, sort of vague, but at least a response from the company. I don't really know. I was thinking about it, though, and it does say 100% coconut oil on it. I have friends who won't touch a diet soda but who will eat devil dogs and stuff like that; they read the can and gasp at the chemicals it contains. So, with all the talk about virgin, expeller, etc., it makes you feel like Louana is a no-no. I haven't eaten it yet, and I have only used Spectrum, and one jar at that. I just opened a new jar last night. I also bought one called Nutiva. It cost twice as much and is really really white and from what I understand, will still have that coconut taste.

The Louana brand label says if you want the taste of coconut on your food, to use it. Lots of people on this board report that their virgin has no taste. Well, I don't get it. If it is virgin, why wouldn't it taste like coconut? I ate fresh, off-the-tree coconut in Hawaii and it would seem that if you made coconut oil out of a fresh, virgin coconut, it would still taste like coconut. Even when I smell the Spectrum, it doesn't have that much of a smell. But when I made my cookies with it the first time I ever used it in my life, they tasted great just like coconut. So...I still don't know about all of this. I know that the Louana does not have transfats in it. I would like to know if anyone has used it to cook with and if it imparts a coconut taste. That would be great to know. Like I said, I've never eaten mine because all of the talk about it since it is the cheapest one. And like I also said, I drink diet soda; I figure it's better than diving into a bat of chocolate!

P.S. The Nutiva that I bought at the health food store, recommended by the manager, is whiter than the Louana and the Spectrum.

Well....I had purchased a jar of 'Herbs of Light' from our local HFS (Mother Earth). Did this last week and paid (yikes) $18.95 for 15oz
I'm almost through with it so yesterday went back and guess what? Not one single jar of ANY COil (any brand)--the place had been wiped out entirely. The gal told me there is a real 'craze' happening and she had no idea when any more would be arriving... Soooo, I went to Wally world and bought their Louana brand for $2.95--figured it would be okay in a pinch til I can get my hands on the 'good' stuff!

Good to know...but wow, can you believe they actually tell you that it will give your food a coconut flavor on the label? I guess it would be a good replacement for Crisco
