feel really sick after eating carbs?

Hi,
I have been following a low carb regimen fairly strictly. On Sat eve I had McDonald's--fries, filet-o-fish, diet coke.

My stomach was gurgly and I was uncomfortable all day on Sunday and then I've been just as sick (diarrhea, stomach pains, bad gas--sorry for TMI), and I feel just as bad today.

I checked the signs for food poisoning from Sun's foods, but I'm not having any nausea; doesn't seem to be that.

Has anyone else had this strong of a reaction from carbs? I was previously tested for Celiac and negative on all 3 measures.

I'm just wondering if I could have that strong of a reaction to the carbs at McD's or to wheat?
Thanks
Anne Marie

Mandie--was the reaction immediate?

Mandie,
Thanks for responding to my , er, um, sensitive post.

Was the reaction immediate? Did you have stomach pain? When did it go away? I seriously wonder if I should go to the docs....

I get gassy, very tried, diarrhea, and then the next day I have a "carb hangover" with a bad headache. It happens every time, so I've learned what it is and I learned to avoid carb binges the hard way!

My wife and I took a weekend get-away to the Wilburton Inn in Vermont...very hoitey-toitey but really nice. Anyway, for dinner Saturday evening we did have 2 rolls each AND Tiramasu for dessert (very bad, huh?). Let me tell you, we were totally out of it on Sunday...groggy and no concentration...a general yucky feeling (almost like going through the carb withdrawal during the first week of induction).

Eating low carb conditions your body to function a certain way, throwing in high carb food is much like putting bad gasoline in your car.....and now you're feeling the side effects.

I had a two forkfuls of sweet potatoes tonight..yeah, I know, not really "legal" but it looked good at the buffet and there was no breading or sugar in it. Anyway all night I've just felt loopy and yucky...I totally blame the sweet potato!

Also -- the other night, DBF and I had some dinner and a few beers "supposed" to be Mich Ultra...Well operative term here "Supposed." We asked the waitress to check if the tap lines had been changed because, well, it didn't taste like Mich Ultra! And she checked, brought us another round...still didn't taste like it. Well guess what? My blood sugar was all whacked and DBF had the poops and stomach probs all day the next day. We NEVER have that type of reaction to Mich Ultra. Our theory? It was spiked, LOL.

But Mainer really put it best...you've been detoxing yourself for all these weeks/months, etc. Why kill it with a McD's happy meal? You may as well inject trans fats into your arteries! Just my $.02.

That's exactly how I feel when I cheat. I stay away from that garbage now. Not worth the side effects. Of course, I can't eat McD's any more anyway, even if I remove the bun. It does a number on my stomach. Funny thing is, I used to live on that garbage.

I feel the same. I am asian so I eat rice my entire life and I can't just give it all up. I cheat once a week, to eat rice and some dessert but after I eat these foods, I feel nauseous, dizzy, heavy eye lids, feel soo crappy, tired, headache, and light headed! urgh sucks!

Yep, eating carbs makes me so ill everytime. It just isn't worth it to do it anymore. My best friend who does low fat is the same way. I think your body gets so used to not having junk in it and the new way your eating that is basically says, " WTH was that? I am gonna make you pay for that!"

Hi Anne Marie…
Anytime we adjust/adapt our body to a new regimen of eating, it adjusts to the new source of fuel we feed it.

There are tons of posts from people who have to adjust to low carb eating initially (either have constipation or diarrhea, headaches, or lack of energy etc).

So when we feed the body a different source of fuel, it has to adjust to process it. That's likely all you encountered...

It's not God's way - or nature's way - of telling you anything ''official''. Just your body reacting to a different source and type of carbs you have been avoiding...

By the way...unless you are following a zero carb plan, you have been feeding it carbs all along. Your title made it sound like you assumed eating carbs will make us sick...but many here eat at least 30 carbs a day, and those maintaining even more...

This is exactly what happens to me. It only happens when I binge though, if I have maybe one or two "off plan" things I might have a little stomach distress but nothing like if I binge ate those things. No matter what your eating, I think binge eating would make you sick!

To me it's like putting OIL in your gas tank. Why would I want to do that?

Lessons we learn! Painful ones sometimes.

On top of the switch from a fat burning body to a carbohydrate burning body which resulted in stomach despair, you have also consequently by nature been off of vegetable oils. Those too will make you ill.

You ate garbage food and your body is responding negatively. These are the little lessons that continue to drive us to eat healthier.

I have a client that is preparing a big pasta dinner to experiment. She's a strong soul so I told her "go for it" I can't wait to see the report!

Oh my goodness! Me too! I eat low carb all the time with a few exceptions. Last night I went out for a "girls night". I had a skinny girl margarita and crab cakes. After I grabbed a piece of thick white bread w/butter!!!! Bad mistake - I was cramping all night and still trying to dance with my girls at the club.

Not worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
