Actually venison is about 20% fat.

Don't forget, fat in meat is a GOOD thing.

I haven't read all of the responses, but I think the biggest key to keeping LC affordable is to not get into all of the specialty foods. They are serious budget-blowers!

Since there are a lot of popular stores listed here by name, I'll take a chance that mentioning Albertsons by name violate the rules. They nearly always have great meat sales, especially on steaks, fish, pork tenderloins, etc. I buy as many as I can afford that day, oil and freeze. Recently they had porterhouse steaks for $5.99/lb (cheap for here). I bought 12. Oiled them liberally, and froze them separately in zipperbags. Takes about an hour to thaw under water. We just had one last night.

My favorite is a local store has buy one bag of pre-cooked jumbo shrimp, get 2 free!! I always stock up, yesterday I made a stir fry, cutting the tails off of a bag of the shrimp tossing them in olive oil, then adding fresh broccoli with some lemon pepper, and dried onion flakes. EXCELLENT

You really ought to think about getting a vacuum sealer. They are great. I have a Food Saver, basic model.
I found it is sufficient formy needs.
May I ask why you oil them?

Yesterday I found the complete set of Atkins For Life; Menus, CD, Recipes, Carb Counts, Journal, Tips, Glycemic Information, etc. for $1.99 at TJ Maxx. It was originally marked $24.99. Dr. Atkins himself speaks on part of the CD. Kinda sad to think it was only worth $1.99 but I was glad to find it.

I used to eat Lickety Splits (Homemade Popsicles) when I was a kid (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth). They are great sugar free too.

Lickety Splits

1 small pkg SF jello
or 1 large pkg SF jello
1 pkg SF Koolaid (with small pkg jello)
2 pkgs SF Koolaid (with large pkg jello)

Use the amount of water called for on the jello pkg. Make jello as directed and then stir in the Koolaid. Pour into small Dixie cups and place popsicle sticks in them or use any container that would work. Freeze.

***These are really yummy and carb free.

Great thread, I had to read the whole thing..lol! Love seeing some of the ideas!

We raise a lot of our own meat ( chicken, rabbit, pheasant, quail ) My husband is also a hunter so we have at least one deer in the freezer a year. We get fresh eggs daily and we also buy whole hogs for $20-$30 ( allready cut in halves and ready for processing) and we do the processing ourselves ( pork loin, sausage, brats, hams etc )
We will be having a garden this year so that will help on the veggies...we also shop Aldi's. We have 4 kids to feed to we try to save as much as we can.

King Soopers (Kroger...City Market) has frozen veggie blends on sale for $1 a bag. I just packed the freezer.

The farmer's markets in my area are opening. I can get fresh eggs, baby spinach, radishes and lettuce right now.

I also have my own garden. Mostly herbs, but I planted tomatoes, peas and cucumbers. We have a pear tree and 2 grape vines, but the squirrels usually get most of that stuff. I do have some strawberries, but will have to fight for those as well.

I need to plant a blackberry berry patch. Berries are so expensive, but easy to grow yourself IF you can get good, healthy canes to start with.

Thanks again for everyone sharing their ideas. I don't have any real big secret or tip but I will share what helps us.
We have chickens so fresh eggs are great and cheap. We also freeze and can vegetables during the summer months and that helps save on the grocery bill. The fresh vegetables in the winter months are the biggest problem and trying to catch meat when it is on sale.
I have been known to ask Super Walmart to honor the competitors price on meat and other products. They do but it makes you very unpopular in the check-out line because it takes some time and when I was there the manager had to approve. But hey if their policy is to match competitors then I am going to take them up on it.

I am going to have to find a cheap source for gorund turkey. About a year and a half ago it was 68 cents/pound. Then it jumped to $1.56/pound. Now I am having trouble finding it for less than $1.62/lb. We use a lot of ground turkey and this price jump is killing my budget.

I told hubby if it goes up any more I was going to buy an electric meat grinder and make my own.

You know that may not be a bad idea about grinding your own. There is a butcher in our area that hunters can take their kill to and have it made it sausage, steaks, etc....depending on the animal of course. When we let hunters use our land to hunt deer they always use this butcher and give us some and it is always great when cooked. I will ask about the turkey if I can remember too and see if they have any tips or suggestions.

BTW- I am glad I am not the only one who is unpopular at Walmart on grocery day!! I try not to go on a Saturday, but hey they can always open another register to help things moving while I get them to match prices.

I have cooked 2 already and deboned them. The meat is in the freezer in bags. I have 2 more to cook this weekend. For thanksgiving, I will take a bag of the cooked meat and put it in the slow cooker with several cans of cream of chicken mushroom soup (its pretty low carb) along with some saved drippings and spices. Cheap and easy

Wow - In America food is so much cheaper than it is here in England. Anyway, I try & play it cheap by buying what's on offer whenever possible, turkey instead of chicken, big trays of chicken wings (you can get about 15 wings for £1.50 which is about $3), mackerel, canned tuna. Meat is expensive though so it's sure not easy!
