I need a buddy!

Hi! Anybody else need a buddy? I have about 20-25 more pounds to go, and I'm doing Atkins with a vegetarian bent!

Are you still looking for a buddy? I could use one, too. Somehow, I just can't seem to stay motivated on my own. I have about 30 pounds to lose. I'm starting where you did, but would be happy to get to about 130! Is this your first attempt at low carb?

Sure am! It's kind of like attempt 1.5 - I read the atkins book and did induction (a little modified since it's hard to follow the rules without meat!) back in may-june and lost about 11 lbs in as many weeks. Then I tried adding "good carbs" without counting much, and my loss all but stopped. So I'm back inductioning. 125 is kind of a ballpark figure. It's what I was at for several years before a stressful period got the better of me and I ate too much! How'd you settle on 130?

Hi! I'm like you - only I was at 130 pounds before a stressful period got to me and I gained! I felt so much better when I wasn't carrying these 30 extra pounds around! Congratulations on losing the 12 pounds you have already! It must really be a challenge without eating meat! I did Atkins a few years ago and lost about 30 pounds then, too. I thought I could keep it off by just eating everything in moderation -- but obviously that didn't work! So this will be my second attempt -- if I can just get going and stick to it like I did last time! Sometimes I think maybe I'm not in the right frame of mind to be successful at it right now, but I really don't want to wait any longer to get started again. So, I guess I have to get my head on straight and get going. Hopefully I'll be as successful as you have been!

30 lbs - wow! How long did that take you to lose?

Well - I started in September that time, too, and it took me until February to lose 30 pounds. (I don't know how I did it with Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and my birthday all during those months!)

Are you exercising at all? I have a treadmill that I use when I have time, but lately I've been so busy. I really should MAKE time and get back on it.

I can't decide if it would be easier or harder during the holidays. On the one hand, having cookies, pie, mashed potatoes, and all that stuff off limits, instead of trying to consume them in moderation, might be a help. On the other hand...I've gone turkeyless on Thanksgiving for a few years now, and adding all those other delicious cooking smells to my avoid list might be near impossible! So great work there

I exercise a decent amount. On a good week I'll do a half hour or so on the recumbent bike or elliptical maybe 4 days or so. In my apartment at school, I don't have cable, so I make my exercise time my tv time. A good motivator to get my butt downstairs to the gym in my building where there is cable, plus it makes the time go by faster and I don't feel like I'm wasting time just sitting there watching tv! I don't think I'll ever be a person who enjoys exercise, but when I make it coincide with something I do like, like the Food Network (ironic huh?) it's easier to do.

Do you run on the treadmill? If so, would you have any suggestions on how to work up to running at a decent pace for more than like, 5 minutes?

I do OK at avoiding stuff over the holidays as long as I don't have that first bite! Once I take even a taste, it's all over for me! Which is, I guess, how I gained that 30 pounds back in the first place!!

I know what you mean about exercising while watching TV. That's the ONLY way I can make myself use the treadmill! I don't really like exercise, either. Never did and probably never will. But I don't mind it when there's something interesting on tv to keep my mind occupied! I also have a vcr hooked up to the tv in front of the treadmill, so sometimes I'll even watch some things I've recorded. (Like Diners, Drive Ins and Dives -- I also like the Food Network!)
I mostly just walk at a pretty quick pace on the treadmill. Every once in a while I'll try running a bit, but never for more than 5 minutes, so I'm not much help to you on that question.

What are you substituting for the meat in your eating plan? Are you eating mostly salads? Eggs for breakfast? Breakfast is the hardest meal for me. I'm not a big fan of eggs and I'm so used to something sweet for breakfast that I really struggle with that meal!

Hi! Are you looking for another buddy?! I am getting really bored with diet now-need some motivation-the new clothes are helping but still! I can barely look at canned tuna anymore! so I joined here yesterday. I'm where you are now. Would love to say that was my starting weight but unfortunately it was 252(actually probably a bit more cos didn't weigh myself for the first couple of weeks-just measured). Started in November so it's been a long time!

Yeah yeah be our buddy! If you're bored, maybe you can try my newest innovation (well, I'm sure somebody thought of it before...but it just popped into my head today!): I made deviled eggs, but I used some bleu cheese dressing in place of some of the mayo. mmm!!

So you lost almost a hundred lbs in the last 10 months? that's amazing!

I eat a lot of soy products: tofu, tempeh, edamame, fake meats. Breakfast for me is usually eggs and soy bacon. But I do eat a sweet lunch: I eat full fat greek yogurt, sometimes with splenda and berries or with sugar free jelly mixed in! Maybe that'd be a good breakfast! It's funny, cause I hated eggs until I stopped with the carbs. After a few days of pretty much nothing but soy and cheese, I was dying to try something else, and now I love them!

Blue cheese dressing sounds yum! breakfast is always eggs for me! Actually made my first egg-white omelette today-felt so L.A.!! Trying to cut down on the fat-was getting worried about all the eggs! A few weeks ago bought greek yoghurt-well a low-fat version-but god is it gorgeously creamy-had been having normal natural yorghurt until then--- I know it's terrible to think I had a hundred to loose!! Still a long way to go!

I've actually been making an effort to eat a lot of fat! When I make my fat to carbs/protein ratio as large as possible, I end up eating less. I love egg white omelettes - I make them for my mom sometimes, and then I use the extra yolks in my own omelette!

Do you usually eat the same thing all the time, or do you get bored easily? I love having a routine of food

Oh god ya I eat the same things the whole time-for months-and am so bored! It was basically Atkins fat flush thing for months-egg mayonaise, chicken with mayo, tuna with mayo! Then really stalled around 195-kept going up and down then started Stillmans-basically the above without mayo! And really upped the exercise. But since mid-July I have relaxed it a bit-have some salad, natural low-fat yoghurt and berries, and even some ryvitta. But I do find it handy to eat the same things because you don't really have to think about it.

Isn't it great that it feels like a treat when you finally eat fruit and veggies?

I know right. But I think even if it weren't for the health/weight stuff...it's worth it to me to feel full all the time!

So you're in Ireland I see..I was there once when I was pretty young, about 12. Dublin was my favorite part! I was dead set on going to Trinity College for a while there...

Ya I'm from the "green isle"! I'm from Galway on the west coast. Lived for a few years in Dublin. Just home from work-had chicken breast and small salad-boring! Going to gym for a while later-such an exciting life!!

OH man that sounds rough! Well, I'm happy to talk you through it on here

Do you guys use ketostix? I have a love/hate/obsessed relationship with them and I don't even know how helpful they are!

Definitely, but I wonder if I put too much stock in them. Plus, I think I'm in ketosis sometimes, even if they say no...
