Any men out there?
Feel funny being a pen-pal with a married lady, being a happily married man myself.
I've been lc'ing for almost 3 months now and it's truly become a way of life for me. I enjoy cooking, which helps. My wife and kids are eating regular meals - so many nights I'll cook for all of us and my wife cleans up the mess (arrangement both of us enjoy)! Anyway, I'm a Kentuckian at heart who's lived in Tennessee for 23 years now. Can't imagine going back to the old WOE!!!! |

any men out there
hi Danny,
I have been low carbing for 15 weeks. My wife is on it also which makes it easier. We still fix other stuff for our daughter though. What helps me is I grill ALOT! The women tend to dislike the guys because we lose faster in most cases. Gotta love testosterone! Makes them a tad bit jealous. If you want to ttalk about anything let me know! Ron |

Thx for the reply Ron.
Good you're in it with your wife. Will make things much easier. Wish I could get my wife to join me. She's done LA Wt. Loss in the past (which is a LOT like Adkins from what I saw) and lost about 40 lbs. doing it, but has gained probably half of that back. She knows what induction is from her past diet and doesn't want to go through it now that school has started up (she teaches). She has accepted the fact that I am in this for the long haul, however. Our only issue was the dishes. With her cooking for herself and our two boys and then me cooking my own dishes, we generated a LOT of dirty dishes. I hope we've worked through that issue. Well, got to go. Heading to Gatlinburg, TN for the weekend to meet my mother, brother, sister, and her husband. Haven't been there in over 20 years. Beautiful place if you've never been there. Hey Guys...
Mind if I join in? My name is Michael and I've been on Atkins now for about 2 weeks. I've lost 9.25 pounds and feel great! I'm single so I've only got me to deal with as far as cooking or fixing meals for. I'm sure that it's probably easier with a participating partner to give you support and encouragement.
Anyway, it's good to find guys to share information with. I'm sure I'm going to have lots of questions as I learn the ropes to this WOL. Michael |

Thanks Danny
Glad to be here! I've got to say that I'm really impressed with how good I feel. It's like a whole sense of well being!
I'm still in the induction phase and I think I'll probabley stay in it for a while yet. I've got about 126 pounds to go still. If I can maintain a 5 pound a week loss, I should be down to my goal weight of 180 by February. Too cool! Have you found that the weight loss is steady? Or have you hit any stalls? Michael |

I only stayed on induction for two weeks. Lost from 220 down to 200 during the first month. During the entire month of July, however, I stalled at 200 =/- 2 lbs.
Looking back, I attribute the stall to discovering homemade low carb shakes and ice cream. I was consuming WAY too much Heavy Cream which is loaded with calories. Last week I cut the heavy cream out completely except for main entrees and the weight loss resumed. I was down to 196 last friday before going to Gatlinburg for the weekend. Gained back to 199 over the weekend, but feel most of that was water retention since I didn't drink much. Also started running again a few weeks ago. Don't run very fast, but really enjoy it. Has helped raise my energy levels. My 21 yr. old son is also on Adkins. He's always had a weight problem and started somewhere in the 270 lb. range. He has never actually gone off induction and has lost as of last week 36 lbs. Hope you continue to feel well. If you have a lot of weight to loose like my son, I'd encourage you to also stay on induction if you can. From what I've read, however, most people do have stalls for one reason or another occasionally - sometimes just attributed to your body "catching up". Don't get too discouraged if you do. Danny |

Would be glad to have your DH join.
Yes, most members of this BB are ladies and we guys DO have to put up with some strange lingo, like TOM - but doesn't mean that Adkins is a ladies WOE. My brother introduced me to it years ago although I only started it in May of this year. My 21 yr. old son and I are on it now and I know of at least 4 guys at my workplace on it. I'm doing it for my health. Not vastly overweight, but my blood pressure was rising with my waistline and I was also concerned about contracting type II diabeties which all my aunts & uncles have and one of my grandfathers died of. My BP was 148/100 and is now 140/80. I have lost a little over 20 lbs. with about 10 more to go. I owe a lot of it to this BB which gives me a wealth of information and encouragement. I would encourage your husband to join also. WE NEED MORE MEN! |

diet soda question
hey guys;
i got a question; i read in the Atkins book that diet soda should be moderated as they have a lot of Aspartime(sp). will this affect the indction? i have tried to drink as much water as i can - i drink about 2.5 liters a day, and i had to force mysefl to get to that, but that is about all i can stomach. The rest of the time i drink diet Dr.pepper, or diet Coke or some kinda diet soda if either one is not available. also i have got a crap load of lunchon meat, which i eat with cheese, is the sodium nitates in the lunchon meats to be avoided? i watch the carb content, but since the nitrates were singled out in the book i was wondering if i should cut this out? thanks J |

Welcome mysticocean,
Not easy getting started, is it? I've been on Adkins now for almost 4 months. Now seems like a way of life (WOL). Don't even think about Butterfingers anymore - REALLY! Once you get through induction (and you can), there are so many recipes and foods you can add to help break the carb habit. Not easy though! As far as water goes, I've found it to be the critical link in this or any diet. During and just after induction I lost weight pretty fast just by drinking 64 oz. or better. Now I find that I have to have the 100 oz. to lose. Without it my body readjusts and I gain. I only drink sodas, coffee, or tea on rare occasions. There are those on this board who would tell you that IF you drink a lot of sodas or caffeine, you need to drink MORE water than normal to compensate. I like cokes, but I've also always liked plain ol' water, so its no big deal to me. I also don't eat a lot of luncheon meat, but have never really avoided it. I occasionally have some ham with cream cheese rolled in. Don't know if the nitrates are susposed to stall you or if it is just a health thing - suspect the latter. I DO eat bacon at least once a week, with nitrates. Doesn't bother me that I know. Again, DRINK WATER and FORGET CANDY BARS. Also forget eating out till after induction. You'll be able to add in some eating out later - you'll also be more savvy about what and where you can eat. Haven't been Chinese since starting. Good Luck, Danny |

thanks Dannyt
u really dont think abot Butterfingers anymore?
lol ok i will try and cut downon the diet soda, i think it is the lingering sweetooth in me, and it gives me the false feeling of eating/drinking somthing sweet. drink more water even when i drink diet soda? hmmm that may explaine why i my P is dark and i am drinking all this fluid. So ok 64 Oz's huh? thats 2 liters, so any diet soda i drink adds to that. gotcha i guess i will keep the lunchon meats, sometimes its the cooking that throws me, ya know? it was sooo much easier to open a little debbies than to stand at the stove and cook. so i get the lunchon meat, grab a pack, lop off some chedder and aawwaayy i go -- with apologies to Jackie Gleason. Do hot dogs have nitrates in them? cause i can just pop a hot dog in the microwave and eat. but i was never really a fan of hot dogs, maybe some Hillshire Farms sausage. thanks for the advice J |

No, don't really care for candy bars anymore. In fact, have a couple in my desk drawer as I write this - artifacts of my past way of eating. I'll eventually take them home for my kids to eat.
DO get munchies, however. Mostly after 7:00 at nite. I'm in OWL, so keep nuts, sf popcicles, or something like that available. Hard to do this WOE without cooking. Luckily, I like to. My son (in college) is much like you. He's essentially been on induction since beginning in May and has lost at least 40 lbs. I would encourage you to cut back on the diet drinks. No need to eliminate, just reduce to maybe one per day as a treat. Hot dogs, I think, have nitrate - but that doesn't stop me from eating them occasionally. Also have smoked sausage every few weeks or so. Not sure yet what we're having tonite!! Blackened chicken sounds good!! |

Have never used the stix. No real reason - just haven't. Don't remember what Adkins had to say about the level of ketosis, but did read just the other day that if the body gets into higher levels of ketosis, it may actually HURT your weight loss. This article said that lower levels were better.

JP - Glad to have you. WOW, you've lost 120 lbs. Were you on Adkins?
Mysticocean - don't compare one scale to the next. I deal with scales every day on my job weighing product. Every scale has a different level of accuracy & repeatability. Accuracy = ability to hit the actual weight Repeatability = ability to hit the same weight time & time again. No mechanical scale will hit the exact same weight every time. Your doctor's scale is probably more accurate and repeatable then your's at home. Your weight loss, however, is relative to the weight you first took on the scale you took it on. Any weight taken on any other scale cannot be compared. Hope that made sense. |

1st 14 days
huh
i did not know that about weight scales; thanks for the info Danny so i am gonna stick with the home scale as the measurment for me. so this week i lost 4 lbs i think this makes my weight loss in the 1st 14 days at 10 lbs; so my metabolic resistance is 'average' well once more into the fray and all... J,
Also lost about 10 lbs. in first two weeks. I'm "stuck" now at 194 +/- 1, but not too concerned since my goal is 9 lbs. away. If I got REALLY serious I could lose it faster. Besides, feel better and healthier than have in years. Also lost my "potbelly" and am back in size 34 pants which I've had in storage for years. In fact - have a pair of Levi's that have been in my closet for years with me wishing I could get in them. Now that I can, they are TOTALLY out of style!! Danny |

Low Carbing Gotten Easier
Hey there,
I've been on this lc plan before and it was hard because of the basic foods available. Now there are so many options it doesn't get boring. This is the third try and I've been at it for 1 month. I've dropped quite a bit of weight because I've backed off heavy weight lifting and dropped some muscle weight. I can tell it's working because my "fat deposits" have shrunk. I'm back into the gym and trying hard to keep with the lighter weights, more reps but it sure is tempting to go heavy again. Great to find a group of guys who can talk about this stuff. Most of the threads are from and for the ladys. Any pointers or input would be greatly appreciated. My big challenge is coming up on a visit to my hometown of Tucson in a few days. Going to be hard to tell Mom to back off the carbs. Later, Mark in 'Bama |
