Water Bath Canning/Glass Stove Top

I have a glass stove top, and the water bath canner I just bought, saids not to use on a glass stove top....

If you can with one, what alternate do you use? I have a hot plate, but it takes a long time to get the temperature up to 212* to process....it never gets to a boil, but it is 212*

I planted 14 tomato plants this year, and I'm hoping to can them

Thanks
Kateee

Can you obtain a turkey fryer? the gas platform that the stainless steel pan sits on works extremely well for canning--just this past weekend I had one canner there and two on the stove--the gas can be regulated well and gets as hot as you need--most hubbies have one of those or can borrow one? its a multi purpose item!!! good luck with those tomatoes--did 33 quarts saturday.

if the canner bottom is flat, I would use it on the glass top stove. I have a maytag glass top stove since 1998 and have been canning every summer on it.

If your canner is flat you shouldn't have any problem.
I've never used a glass top. Dorcas knows.

I also have 13 tomato plants and mine won't ripen until Sept. I can't wait.
I just canned my beets gold & red and white striped. Yum.

Since the manufacturer does NOT recommend it, I would follow the manufacturer's instructions...-- OR-- you could just throw caution to the wind and do it anyway ;-). I will tell you this...replacing the glass stove top is NOT cheap (my mom had one that cracked when she 'canned' on it.) After it happened, she decided to purchase a new stove...it was cheaper...true story...

If you don't have access to a single burner propane unit (which works very well I am told), If I were in your situation, I would just make a deal with a friend or neighbor to swap some of your home canned tomato items in exchange for using their stove. Might be your best option.

My mom was in the same boat years ago.

Solution:

They bought a old used stove at a thrift store and set it up in the garage, moves to the back patio pad in summer, back in for fall.

Not only solves glass top stove canning issue but helps NOT heat up the house.

Side note: If simmering foodstuffs outside invest in a couple splatter screens, keeps the bugs out

33 quarts fantastic I went to Walmart yesterday and they have the turkey fryer for around $50...My niece has one that I may borrow, since I would only need it during canning season. Great idea, Thank You

Good idea, but we live in a very small cottage, no garage, very limited space. I saw a Ninja at Walmart yesterday for 20 bucks, and I'm deciding whether to throw out the blender and replace it with the Ninja as space is tight here.....

I pickled beets.

Dorcas & Ester...the canner is flat with indentations on the bottom....I just don't want to chance it...

This is my first time canning. Especially with the rise in food prices. We had a good garden this year. I want to can our own salsa. Looks like I'm going to need a pressure canner for it and the green beans...It will pay for itself this winter

Sorry ya all for the multiple post, but I to thank you all for responding

Those indentions may be why they say not to use it on the glass top. (That would in essence make it not a flat bottom pot.)

This is one of the very reasons that I did not get a glass or ceramic cook top stove when I had to replace my stove a few years ago. I love the looks of them, and love that smooth flat surface, but I too am a klutz, and I would probably drop something on it first off, if I didn't get something too hot & break it. I can, and I use cast iron skillets. Both have been no nos in the past, and I still don't trust using either of those on a glass stove (myself)!

FYI on the multiple posts for replies (doesn't bother me, but as I said FYI): If you want to reply to multiple posts, you can do so in one post if you like. Just go to the bottom of each post you want to reply to, see the little icon with the " & + signs (next to the one that says quote), click on that, then go to the next post, ect. until you have all you want selected, then either click quote on the last one, or click Post Reply. They will all be in one post for you. You can go in between each quote, and post your reply to each one.
Again, your multiple posts didn't bother me, just thought I'd pass on how to do them in one post.

I love my pressure canners--I found two that I picked up for 10.00 dollars each and then I invested in an All American Canner that doesn't require any seals--ever!! I just put 60 dollars into the other two with ordering seals and rings-I just hate having to put money into something every few years-so-if you can invest into one good canner--I would get an All American--I got mine on ebay. I love canning--I can my tomatoes instead of doing the water bath--it just seems faster and easier for me--happy canning

Hit quote button, then highlight what you don't want, leaving the small sentence you do want. Delete the highlighted. Make sure you leave the
your unhighlighted sentence :
Hope I explain this okay

Thanks Martin. I look at my hot plate, but it has no info on the wattage...it boiled the canner, but it was a slow boil, one bubble here or there, but the temp was 212*.....another downside with the hot plate is that I don't feel safe with it, the canner pot is too big for it, and its a balancing act....

I'm going to experiment with the next canning batch....we're going to build a wood fire and put our canner on that. I'm hoping it will get to a rolling boil....I'll post back and tell you all how it works.....it will be a few days as tomatoes are still ripening out there

This first time canning for us....it is fun
