Oat Fiber question

Can some one tell me if oat fiber and oat bran are interchangeable in baking? I would like to make some muffins for my husband that are heart healthy and before low carb I made them using oat bran. Thanks

Dee

No they are not. Well, you MIGHT could use oat bran, but it would not turn out the same, nor have anywhere near the same carb count! Oat bran is much higher in carbs!!! Oat Fiber is all fiber, so if you do not count the fiber, there are no carbs!!!
The end product would not be the same either. Oat Fiber is much lighter than oat bran. They are just NOT the same product.

Somewhere on here (probably several places) they have talked about the differences. Sorry, not sure what posts. You might do a search, but would probably come up with a LOT of posts.

Click on the blue words oat fiber & oat bran in your post (or maybe even in this one), and it will take you to Netrition, and give info on them.

Oat Fiber is a much better low carb choice!!!!

Oat fiber is very thirsty. I would think coconut flour might be a better substitute or some other flour that soaks up liquid like psyllium.

Soobee, the OP is looking for a sub for oat bran.

mojave, if you post the recipe, maybe we can help you better find a sub. We could also help you find a different recipe already tested from this site. Part of the problem may be that your recipe states the oat bran is "heart healthy".

Thanks for the replies. Flax is not an option, drjlowcarb. Neither of us like it. I will gladly share the recipe. It's from the book The Eight Week Cholesterol Cure.
Soobee, thanks for the idea. I'm looking for oats as the main component.

Billie, I am aware that oat fibre is the low carb way to go , carb wise. Thanks for the reminder. I did look on Neitrition and read the reviews of oat fibre, some seem to be using it as flour.I have no experience with it.I also found some posts on the recipe site, but am still not certain how to sub out the oat bran. I'm not sure if just ANY fiber is useful for reducing cholesterol, or if oats have some special properties in that regard. I don't have book any more, it probably discusses that. The recipe also calls for apple fibre which is high carb, 5 net carbs per Tbs.

2 cups oat bran
1/2 cup apple fiber
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 Tbs canola oil
1 1/2 cups skim milk
1/2 cup blueberries
2 egg whites
1/3 cup sugar

Obviously I'd be using a low carb sweetener, a whole egg, and probably unsweetened almond milk for the liquid. The recipe makes 12 muffins so the apple fibre would add 3.3 gr carb per muffin. For my husband that's fine. I'm okay with using some almond meal in the recipe. My husband eats whole eggs, butter, cheese, cream and meat, chicken and fish. He needs something to grab with his coffee, and I'd like it to be something with cholesterol lowering fibre. I don't believe in the typical low fat diet that heart patients are told is healthy. My husband has been taking statins but could use some improvement in his numbers. We both lost 40 pounds eating low carb and have maintained it with a few 5 lb ups and downs over 10 years.

Thanks again! Dee

Maybe try a combination of oat flour and oat fiber (I'd probably try half a batch with 2/3 oat flour, 1/3 oat fiber to start). Or oat flour, oat fiber and almond meal. Think this one is just going to be a trial & error.
