Sugar alcohols

Was wondering if anyone can tell me if the sugar alcohols - mannitol, sorbitol, etc. are okay to have. I know I can make my own sweets with Xylitol, Erythritol, etc. but there are store bought things that are made with sugar alcohols and are those okay?

Kemi, I'm diabetic also and it is difficult figuring out which products will cause a spike. I have found the subs that work well fo me(the ones I listed) but the Coconut Palm Sugar I can only use in small amounts. I don't eat many processed foods anymore because of this. I make low carb treats and then freeze them. I usually check my BS when trying a new recipe to see how it affects me. It's not fun but something I have learned to live with. I feel lucky to be able to make and eat these goodies and control my BS.

Ginaaa, that's wonderful. Isn't amazing what just diet will do for diabetes? And all the doctors want to do is push those drugs. Makes me sick.

Would you care to share some of your recipes with me? I would so appreciate it. Thanks.

Most of the ones I really like I post!! lol The most recent ones are the Chocolate Almond Joy Bars, Chocolate Mayonaise Pound Cake and Lemon Cream Cake. None of these are my recipes..just ones I have either found when web surfing or on this great forum. I have been able to go off 3 different medications since going low carb!!

Lemon Cream Cake

Chocolate Almond Joy bars!!

Chocolate Mayonnaise Pound Cake

I also recently made strawberry shortcake using the fluffy biscuit recipe and specks shortcake recipe. I used real honey in specks recipe which made each shortcake 8 carbs but next time I will use sf honey for less. Here's the thread with the recipes. For the strawberries I just thawed some berries that I had frozen and added sweetener.

It's the best cake, I still have some in the feeezer and everytime I have taken a piece out and thawed it it was just as moist,as it was when I first made it. The crumb topping sort of reminds me of pineapple for some reason. I guess after it's been sitting on the cream frosting it takes on a different texture. I love this cake!!

I think there's a couple pieces of the coconut bars left, when my daughter gets home I will ask her to take a pic of them.

Depends on the individual, for me they kill me both by taking me out of ketosis and by teaching me to eat desserts and chocolte bars and things which are really habits you can easily break.

The article that JerseyGyrl linked to is good, but I don't think it has enough information about erythritol. They note that it is one of 2 sugar alcs that have a glycemic rating of 0, and it says that it has less than one calorie per teaspoon. Actually, according to my understanding, it has less than half a calorie per teaspoon, because it's about 90 percent undigested. And it bypasses digestion by (mostly) never entering the large intestine--it's eliminated in the urine instead (and therefore doesn't cause the digestive upset that other sugar alcs can cause).
