What is the difference

Does anyone know what the difference between cream cheese and the one that starts with an n. I don't know how to spell neu... Thanks all. Julie

I think the Neufchatel has less fat in it.

I found this:

On paper, the main distinction between the two cheeses is their fat content: While cream cheese by law must contain at least 33% milk fat and not more than 55% moisture, American Neufchâtel weighs in with about 23% milk fat and slightly higher moisture content.*

For me there is a distinct flavor difference. I just do NOT like the taste of neufchatel cheese. Every time I have ever substituted it in a dip recipe, I've not liked the dip AT ALL. Haven't ever used it in cakes or breads, where other ingredients and cooking might alter that negative flavor difference for me.

I don't like neufchâtel either. Once I bought non-fat cream cheese by accident, it was even worse. I don't know how people can eat it!

I don't mind the taste so much but there is a difference. Regular cream cheese tastes much better.

I agree. In the store it says on the box it is 1/3 less fat. It's gross. It has this weird flavor. I can't even describe it. I'm a cream cheese junkie, though. I bought it one time to make a cheeseball for my bf because they were out of full fat CC, and I tasted it and it was funky. I asked him what he though and he said he couldn't taste a difference. Really? Reeeeeally? You are crazy sir.
