"Bowls" for Taco Salad...YUM!!!!
Here's what I posted on a thread about La Tortillas...I thought I would share this as a seperate thread cause I think this is soooooo, soooooo, soooooo, soooooo good!
Here it is: Well, I discovered one more thing to do with these babies last night! 2 nights ago my sister (who refuses to low carb and keeps gaining weight!!!) came home with a taco salad from Taco Bell and boy was that shell looking good! I thought about it over and over again and I was convinced that I could duplicate the shells at home! Well, I did it! I heated lots of oil (got it very, very hot), took 2 ladels, a La Tortilla tortilla and went to work! I would lay the tortilla on the "scooped" part of one ladel, lower it into the oil and then press the tortilla down into the first ladel with the second one. I hope that makes sense, I'm having a hard time explaining it! Anyway, once the "bowl" got kinda solid I removed both ladels and just let it get a little crispier and then drained it on a paper towel. I filled them with grated cheese, ground beef, shredded lettuce, a tsp. of salsa and sour cream and proceded to have one of the best meals that I've had in a loooooong time!!! These shells turned out to be about the size of my fist cause I used the small tortillas but I'm sure it would work even better with the bigger tortillas too. Hope you guys try this and enjoy it just as much as I did. God Bless Shelby P.S. Tonight I'm gonna work on making these into taco shells by using a wooden spoon handle and a pair of salad tongs (I feel like a mad scientist LOL)! I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Hi Shelby
Great idea to do a little experimenting and inventing...way to go! That new technique with the Taco shells and spoon/ tongs otta work out fine. Nice of you to share your results. I believe that your attitude will keep ya on a successful road of LCing; if ya want something bad enough..(most) foods can be reinvented as LC. For me, the inventions and trials-and-errors of this new way of baking/cooking/cutting carbs is fun and challenging...I'n never bored with my food..and am happy to see you take the inititive in that area too! ..where would we be without Mad Scientists?...( probably still living in caves)...![]() Shawnee

Shelby, you can also make taco shells and bowls out of cheese.
Take shredded cheddar cheese, put a small pile in a hot non-stick pan. Kinda spread it out a little. Let it fry up until melted and sides are a bit crispy. Turn over and fry until crisp. Take out and bend slightly to create a taco shape. Let harden. Fill like you would a regualr taco. If you put it in a small bowl, it'll harden in the shape of a bowl. |

I've never ordered any of the low-carb tortillas but may have to now. I love taco salad too. The cheese bowl idea is a good one - I'll definitely have to try it. About the refried beans - what about getting Eden black soybeans, mashing them up, seasoning them & making refried beans that way?

shell forms
I was just at Target and they had these forms that were shaped like taco salad bowls. you put your shell in the bottom one then put the other on top of that and bake it for 10 minutes I think it said. they are kinda pricey at 12.99 but you wouldn't have to make a mess with frying in oil.I just my have to give them a try.

I think I've read instructions that suggest frying the tortilla and then lay it over the bottome of an unpsidedown bowl while it hardens. I've never tried this, but it *might* be slightly less complicated than using two ladels.

I think you could just brush both sides of the tortilla with olive oil and lay it over the bowl to bake on high heat. I'll have to give it a try. I always make pizza with the LaTorilla's----Awesome!!!!

You should be able to use an oven proof bowl, either glass or metal. Heat oven to about 350 degrees spray inverted bowl with cooking spray and lay uncooked tortilla over it. If you prefer to heat in oil in a skillet first then lay over bowl, place a cookie sheet underneath to catch excess oil. Cooking time will very. When you check on it during baking use a long handle spoon to smooth torilla to shape of inverted bowl.

I stopped using the low carb tortillas after awhile when I discovered my sensitivity to grains, esp. wheat and corn. Unfortunately, the black soybeans give me problems, too.
But i make a great taco salad with romaine lettuce, spicy taco meat (with onion and black olives), tomato, avocado, grated cheese and thousand island dressing. Doug |
