Be careful, lots of those powders (I'm imagining that you're looking in a Mexican market? Maybe not) have pineapple/mango/other tropical fruit powders in them that make them sugary. I have friends that use them, but they're not lc'ers.
Also, they tend to be expensive (if we're talking about the same thing) relative to the couple of bucks that a bag of flax costs. |

That's the product, Ann, no added sugars of any kind. I'm thinking that as a powder it has potential for using in baking. Don't know. Won't be trying it for a couple of days, as I am going to be making a couple of items with quiona first and see how my blood sugar reacts to it, then I'll try the flax and nopal powder.

okay, tried this. it looks like flax meal. I was expecting a finer grind when they called it powder. However, supposed to mix with liquid, doesn't mix well. but will use it in place of flax meal. will do the 3 TBL daily (need to do 2 more tsp tonight. I have read that nopal cactus can help lower blood sugar, so am hoping for that affect. wonder if I can find nopal cactus powder and if mixing my own would be cheaper. Have to look.

hi. I am new to the forum, but I make a "morning and evening low carb "shake" using the nopal cactus leaves and flax.. its easy, and you get the great combiination. The Nopal is not noticable and along with the other things I add, actually do make a difference with my blood glucose.
Recipe for Nopal and flax seed shake 2 tbsp flax seed 1 teas fenugreek seed 1/4 teas cinnamon 1 tbsp low carb whey or protein powder ( optional) Blend these in a coffee grinder. 1 cup of no carb orange breakfast drink, ( like crystal light) I sometimes use cherry/orange, or other flavors. 1/2 cup of coconut milk 1 cup of diced nopal cactus ( bottom stem and stickers removed) add the wet breakfast drink, coconut milk and nopal to the blender. Add the ground dried ingredients and whir until mixed.. Drink cold I also often add the blended nopal and coconut milk to my morning hot ground flax cereal. Nopal is available at the grocery store where I live in Washington state, and I have never had any problem finding it fresh. Its great cooked into recipes and stews as well. I have used the powder, but much prefer the fresh . Hope that helps.. |

Thanks for the info. I am always interested in new ingredients. I've just recently seen nopal in the grocery store, but didn't know what to do with it.
