Does anyone here have a spiralizer/spiral veggie cutter?
I am thinking about getting one for making vegetable noodles. I see lot's of different kinds out there, with varied reviews. My fear is that I will get it, use it twice, and then put it under the cupboard in the gadget tomb.

I have one called a Spirooli. They were one of those "As Seen on TV" gadgets a few years back. It DOES make nice noodles out of zucchini or anything firm enough to put on there and turn. Sweet potatoes are good too and you can make little ovenfried "nests" with them! Kinda cute, and tasty!

Had one, it was cheap, and did a poor job. I used it once or twice and to the yard sale it went. So my only advice is you get what you pay for in this category..

I have one and it's great. It's a dark green upright slicer called Benriner Cook Help Spiral Slicer. Mine came with 2 blade sizes.
One trick I use is to squeeze out excess water from the zucchini or squash using a potato ricer. You can squeeze the heck out of those spirals and use them for noodles. |

I bought a julienne peeler that LindaSue recommended but I havent used it yet!
Here is the info from her website:![]() A while back I bought a nifty gadget that I finally got a chance to try today. It's made by OXO and is called a Julienne Peeler. I bought the peeler at Bed Bath & Beyond, but they are available at a lot of places online. You can see a picture of the peeler on my Gadgets page. Above is a batch of "pasta" before cooking. To cut the strands of "pasta", cut the blossom end off the zucchini. With the zucchini laying flat on your cutting board, and holding the stem end with one hand, run the peeler from one end to the other pressing somewhat firmly. Rotate the zucchini slightly and repeat. Keep turning and peeling the zucchini until you've reached the seeds at the center then stop when you've reached any larger seeds. Discard the core. Sauté the "pasta" in a little butter over fairly high heat for just a minute or two. Be careful not to overcook it.

It's sturdy. Well, as sturdy as plastic things can be. But relative to gadgets made of plastic it's impressive. It's pretty $$ but I have no doubt it will last me for many years of spiraling excitement. I researched pretty heavily before purchasing and this one was definitely the one to beat.

I have a julienne peeler as well....love it!
I also have to chuckle at the gadget tomb, LOL! I am the queen of "as seen on TV". My grocery store has an area for this stuff, and I am powerless over it...can't resist! |

I know what you mean, Jake. I am guilty of a gadget tomb as well and I can promise you that my spirooli
is not in it. I am just loving the heck out of my zoodles lately and I don't EVER want to be without this fabulous machine. I traveled to Texas for a month and I even took it with me there haha! I used it at my mother-in-law's house (who's not a lowcarber by the way). She tasted my zuchinni noodles and now she wants one too Sooooooooo worth it! ![]() |

I think the Julienne peeler is great, no question, but it doesn't compare to the Spirooli at all. The difference (the big difference) is that the Spirooli cuts around the vegetable/fruit without breaking so you get very long strands as opposed to the peeler which can only give strands as long as the length of the produce. The Spirooli also offers different cuts which is very nice. The end product of the Spirooli is frighteningly like pasta IMO. Of course the price and kitchen space it will require may not be worth it for everyone. I used the peeler for years and felt satisfied. Once I got the Spirooli the peeler has not seen the light of day.
![]() I think you need to think long and hard as to how much you will use this. If you really think you will get good use of it then I think it's a wise investment. I use mine at least weekly it seems and I feel good about the purchase. I'm going to attempt some turnip "nests" (like you normally make with potato) this weekend in fact. I'm excited! |
