No..my other little grocery is out, too..

I goggled pumpkin shortage 2009

Your thanksgiving dinner could be missing a traditional dish this year, pumpkin pie.

Local grocers said Wednesday that they're battling a canned pumpkin shortage.

Hy-Vee officials said they haven't been able to get canned pumpkin in their stores recently.

The problem isn't just in Iowa; some parts of the country have seen dwindling crops because of cool, wet weather during the growing season.

An Iowa pumpkin grower told KCCI on Wednesday that our crop is about three weeks behind schedule.

SW Washington has the same sad situation....seems to be a National shortage.
I read that Libby's should be restocking the pumpkin by late Sept.

(due to the "shortage" now, its almost a given that the price will escalate on it--the old Supply and Demand thing...)

I was talking to my sister about this a couple weeks ago. I asked her if there was a pumpkin shortage or something. My little store had a few big cans and the local Super Wal-Mart didn't have a single can.

The last pumpkin crop wasn't too good so there's a nationwide shortage going on. I haven't even looked for pumpkin but need to, I suppose. Now that its almost impossible to find.

I jumped in my car this morning and hit 3 stores. Only pumkin pie filing no solid pumkin cans.

Darn now that you can't find any. I want some!

I also stocked up when it was a great price (.59 per can for Libby's) back in 2007 and 2008 so I've still got two cans in my pantry. They don't expire until sometime in 2010 so they should still be fine. I plan to make some Pumpkin Bake for Thanksgiving. I might use the other can to make some Beefy Mushroom Soup.

You can use cooked butternut squash in place of pumpkin in most recipes. In fact canned pumpkin is NOT the big orange pumpkin you think it is - it's a tan-skinned orange-fleshed squash, similar to a butternut!

I couldn't find any at Walmart or Trader Joe's. But Trader Joe's did have canned butternut squash and that worked perfectly in a pumpkin recipe I made (not sure the carb difference and it was like $2 a can!)

In a Florida grocery store there is a sign where the canned pumpkin is supposed to be saying that flooding has caused this season's pumpkin crop problems.

Grumble..now we might have to cook our own? Wallie used to have pie pumpkins..
I don't think the big pumpkins would make good "eating" pumpkins, would they??

How to cook a pumpkin! In easy illustrated steps!

Looks like we will have to go back to the old fashioned way..However, I'm straining my pumpkin so it's not watery.

Carolyn, some will tell you to only use pie pumpkins. But I've made many a pumpkin pie with jackolantern pumpkins.

I used to buy them at Halloween, the kids used magic markers to paint faces on them, then after Halloween, I'd cook them up & make pies, and can what I wasn't using right then.

You CAN use any edible pumpkin.

Butternut squash will work fine, but it IS higher carb!

You can use several different varieties of winter squashes as a sub in pumpkin pies. Several are fairly low carb. Kevin has a thread on winter squash here somewhere.

You can also substitute sweet potatoes, or yams, using a bit more sweetener in place of the pumpkin. Works out just as good, and you really cannot tell the difference with the added spices in it.

I bought a whole pumpkin..gosh they only had about 6 of them in the store..I was going to cut it up..but it was too hard, so I put it in the oven whole in a 9 x 13 pan with a little water in the bottom. I also stabbed it 5 or 6 times..The recipe said this would make a drier pumpkin product, so no straining necessary..
