Penny and Dollar Pinchers
Didn't know how to go about bringing back this thread
Low Carb Food for $20.00 for 1 week -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most from .99 store 1 head cauliflower 1.00 1 bag slaw mix 1.00 1 head broccoli 1.00 2 lbs. grnd beef 4.00 1 lbs. cream chs 4.00 if at Walmart, $2.00 if at .99 store 1 qt .1/2 'n 1/2 2.00 1 head romaine 1.00 1 bag red onion 1.00 1 celery head 1.00 2 doz. eggs 2.00 Chick Drums 3.00 I went over one dollar. I can make quite a few recipes with just these ingredients. Most of us have things on hand to incorporate with these items. It is just to show us that if we had to go this low on budget, we could still stay low carb. I see soups here, crack slaw, oopsies, chicken soup, or chicken with cream cheese etc. lots of things can be done with this group of foods. I would love to see as many posts like this as possible. It would certainly be a help to our budgets. __________________ Barbo Barbo View Public Profile Send a private message to Barbo Visit Barbo's homepage! Helps us with ideas and even if we spend over the $20 we shall learn the values of the local foods and how to fix economical meals on low carb. For some folks this low carb way seems to be a financial draw- back. I'm going to Trader Joe's, .99 cent store, CostCo and to regular markets only with coupons, Also I take advantage of my local farm market who gives double ads and senior discounts on Wednesday. The economy has given a lot of us a big disadvantage, with less money than before due to price increases and lost jobs. Lost income for some of us who are retired. What do you say? Keep the $20 per weeks thread going and a low budget menu plan going? Let me know what you think please. __________________ Barbo Barbo View Public Profile Send a private message to Barbo Visit Barbo's homepage! Thanks to you, Barbo, I'm going to keep track of this, even though it isn't actually a week's worth per se. I wanted s/f lemon pudding mix and they didn't have that in generic, so I had to pay nearly double for name brand. On the bacon, I decided to forego my 12 oz center cut oscar meyer and try two l lb different brands of bacon...the center cut is $3 for 12 oz...this time we'll see if I actually get more bacon for the discount price and 4 more ounces. I'll only know after I cook it up. I think this will be an interesting thread.

I got two HUGE bags of cauliflower yesterday for a buck each!
The produce market where I like to shop takes any produce that is not perfect, trims it up, and bags it. Yesterday I scored the cauli! Already cored, de-leafed, broken into quarters or smaller, and I figure the equivalent of at LEAST 3 heads, maybe 4.... So last night we had ovenroasted Parmesan cauliflower and I still have tons left to make something yummy today! |

I found celery bunches for $1 a bunch at a local grocery (they are organic too). I love spring/summer time, cheaper and fresher veggies! |

I had 2 lonely strawberries out back ready today, and ate them on the way into the house!
I have tons of herbs, but the dang slugs are so bad here it's just too hard to grow a garden. I'd love a Meyer lemon tree though! YUMMM!I did go to a Farmer's Market today and got a whole large fabric bag of produce for $14. Everything is so fresh! |

Last year I bought a container of organic snail/earwig/sowbug bait. It was hella expensive but a little goes a LONG way and really helps keep down the little chewers! |

I've tried just about everything, Charski.
I haven't tried the copper tape, that is a great idea! I'm actually looking into the baskets that grow produce upsidedown (if that makes sense, the plant grows and hangs out the bottom of the container). I tried beer, and it works great but I had dishes overflowing with dead slugs, every day for a week. Just too gross! I'll have to look into the organic snail/earwig/sowbug bait too, I have some of the harsh poisonous stuff but am worried about my cats getting into it. I REALLY want a little green house, but they are expensive. Second best would be raised beds, with copper tape that would work great! Hmm, thanks for the suggestions! I have some planning to do! ![]() |

Yeah, Ang, that's why I bought the organic stuff too. Didn't want the critters of the domestic variety eating the bad stuff and getting sick.
We have raised beds, we used old brick just stacked up in an offset pattern 4 tiers high, plus we have to put hardware cloth or aviary netting in the bottom to keep the dayum gophers out. It works pretty well. Another thing to try is diatomaceous earth - get the kind meant for the purpose, though, not the swimming pool filter kind. Critters hate to cross it and those that do get desiccated because it scratches up their little exteriors and causes them to dehydrate. I just sprinkled it all around the perimeter of my raised beds. Be careful and do it when it's not windy out though, you don't want to inhale it, and you have to resprinkle it if it gets wet, but it's good stuff!

I have read that slugs don't like coffee grounds, so I dump mine in the garden. If you don't drink coffee, you could see if your local doughnut shop will give you their coffee grounds and just til that in in the spring.

I wish I had s $1 store anywhere near me (never have one anywhre I go) that carries produce, and any food items like that. The only ones I've been in that carry any food at all, (other than a FEW canned goods, etc) just carry Junk food items. Not "real" food.
BikerAng, I've read from a friend on another site, that he uses egg shells crushed around his garden to keep away the slugs. He swears by them. I think he crushes them (don't know how fine), and sprinkles them all around it. As I said, he swears by them. But I've never tried it. I've never tried a garden anywhere that we had slugs around, Or vise versa (never had slugs where I've tried gardening). You might give it a try. I bet you have egg shells. ![]()

I decided to give this a try today:
5lbs of ground beef, $1.39/lb, $6.94 3lbs of pepper bacon ends, $3.50 1lb of colby jack cheese, $2.29 18pk of eggs, $1.84 1lb of Oscar Myer Hot Dogs, $1.50 2lbs of cross-rib steak, $1.99/lb, $3.95 Total came to $20.02 The ground beef was on special, but they only had one 5lb package left. The bacon was a new brand they were promoting. I generally shop at 2 different stores, sometimes three. We live out in the middle of nowhere, so we have a couple of small grocery stores on either side of us, and a Walmart. Most of this came from one of the small grocery stores. Only the hot dogs and eggs came from Walmart. Walmart also had a very large picnic pork roast marked down from .99 cents a lb to .69 cents, which made it $6.43 so I bought that too and stashed it away in the freezer. |

I went to the Grocery Outlet today and the clerk was laughing because my total was $118 and it said on the receipt, "You saved $136.94 by shopping with us today!" She thought it was so funny that' I had saved more than I spent!
I can't relate ALL my bargains cuz they're all put away and it would bore you anyway, but I got the LARGE squeeze bottles of Best Foods for $1.99 each, a package of wonderful butcher-shop style no junk hot dogs for $2.99 (it was a couple pounds at least), and I SCORED and got 2 cases (24 bottles) of the Heinz 1 Carb Ketchup for $1.29 bottle! WooHoo! My larder is stocked! |
