Slushie help needed please

With the warm weather here at last, it was putting me in the mood for a slushie. I was thinking of going to the sea front and just buying a cup of shaved ice and then adding DaVinci's but then thought I would try to make one at home.

Would you say it's better to crush the ice and then add syrup or would it be better to make flavoured ice cubes and then crush those?

This may not be exactly what you are after, but I was recently sick with a stomach virus and had no appetite for several days. DH picked me up some stevia/erythritol sweetened ginger ale (Zevia brand). I froze that in an ice cube tray, and then ran the cubes through my food processor. It made a very fine shaved ice. For me, it worked well, but it may not be exactly what you are after.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's along the lines I was thinking of. I think freezing whatever flavour I want for a slushie and then putting the cubes through the processor will give me the best flavour.

I have a machine that makes slushies. I bought it on the recommendation of this board. It's been lots of fun. I usually use the flavor sticks that are made to put into a water bottle. The Totally Light 2 Go has some great flavors sweetened with sucralose and Ace K. My husband's favorite is cranberry pomegranite, but there are lots of other flavors. I like these drink mixes better than the Davinici syrups for snow cones. Just empty the powder into the plastic container with a little water. Add the ice. That's it. Delicious. 0 calories, 0 carbs.

I'll need to look and see if I can find something like that here in the UK. That machine sounds like it would solve my problems .

You buy Totally Light 2 Go where the flavored waters are or the Crystal Light is. It comes in boxes filled with little tubes that you are supposed to put into water bottles. I can buy it at most of the local supermarkets and at Super Walmart. At Walmart, it is with the Koolaid.

I actually went to Walmart after reading this thread and bought the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Maker and the Ice Cream Maker before reading Soobee's reply LOL. I got each for about $23.00. I can't wait to try it. I was only going to buy one or the other and had asked my 9 yr. old which one he wanted. He wanted the Icy Treat Maker and I also wanted the Ice Cream Maker, so I splurged.

Now to get a bag of ice at the store and throw the ice cream maker bucket in the freezer! A few weeks ago I bought from Walmart a couple of flavors of the snow cone syrups that were SF, the only ones they had was Blueberry and Cherry. I will have to try the water bottle mixes too. I bet if you open a tub of chrystal light and sprinkled some in, that would work too.

I wonder if freezing chrystal light or SF koolaid would be the same too? Or would the consistency be different than the carbonated beverages? I will have to do some experimenting. I know when I have made homemade popsicles with chrystal light they are solid ice consistency and not like regular SF popsicles which you can actually bite off.

OK, before I take the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Maker back to Walmart, I must be doing something wrong. The thing isn't working at all as far as shaving ice. Soobee, any suggestions??? I read the instructions and the trouble shooting guide, I must be doing something wrong.

Sometimes my ice cubes get stuck in the feeder tray on top. I just rearrange them and try again. Could this be happening to you? Smaller cubes work better.

I made a slushie using my stick blender yesterday. I used fresh strawberries, DaVinci Raspberry syrup and crushed ice. It only took a few minutes and the ice was ground very, very fine.

I tried everything. It is like the cubes don't even touch the blade at all. The cubes are the size of ice cube tray cubes since I don't have an automatic ice cube maker.
