**HELP! How Do You Make Your Coffee?**
I have been having the worse time making a simple cup of coffee at home. That is all I ask. One cup. It tastes like crap. So I stopped making it at home and just grabbed Starbucks or my daughter would bring me one home ~
I just made some ~ I don't have the packages so I don't recall the tablespoon to cup ratio, but even when I DID, still tasted horrible! ![]() So ~ How do you make it? Tablespoons to cups? What kind of coffee do you use? What is the best cup of coffee you make yourself? |

We have a Bunn coffeemaker and the pot says 10 cups but it's really more like 5. I use 4 level tablespoons of Folger's for a pot. When I want to make just 1 cup, I fill up one cup with water and pour that into the pot and I then use 1 tbsp. of Folger's.

I am really interested to see all the replies.
Lately, my taste buds are changing. What tasted good before, no longer does, and what didn't, now does. Mmmm coffee. I love the smell. And the first sip is the best! |

Since you asked.....
I use an old fashioned stove top percolator, a Revereware model from before 1968. I have three of them in reserve that I bought off E-bay. I've never seen the post 1968 models on E-bay. In case you're interested, 1968 was the year Revereware changed from its original "Patent Process". I think they also started to manufacture overseas at this time. No one makes a high quality percolator these days. A standard coffee scoop is 1/8 cup. That is 2 tablespoons. I use four scoops for an 8 cup pot of coffee, but that is for percolated coffee, so a little less would probably do for drip coffee. I used to have a little Krupps 4 cup drip for a quick, easy cup before work. It worked well. I still used two scoops, but I'm a hard core coffee drinker and I like it strong and black, and preferably a dark roast. The 4 "cup" was about 1.5 mugs, so, just enough for me. I used the peroclator when I had time and wanted "real" coffee. When it comes to drip coffee, I think the shape of the carafe has as much to do with quality as anything. The round, Bunn style just seem to do better. There's probably a reason that the Bunn style is all you see in restaurants. Yes, in addition to being a food snob and a beer snob, I am a coffee snob as well.... Last edited by Thinagain65; 05-30-2009 at 10:12 AM.. |

I use about half of what the "recommended" amount is. If it says 1 tablespoon for 1 cup (they mean your coffee makers cup which is 6 oz) Then I use 1 tablespoon for 2 cups. Maybe a tad more!
I think a typical coffee cup is about 10 oz, which is why your 8 cups of coffee makes about 4.5 cups or so. I'm hooked on Dunkin Donuts coffee. I buy the beans and grind myself, (although they sell ground) and I think it's the BEST coffee EVER! |

Ummmmm. You guys are talkin' my language! LOVE my coffee. I use a standard coffee measure which is 1/8 cup. I use 2 1/2 of those for a full 12 cup pot (which is about 6 cups
) I love Folgers Columbian med/dark roast and put a dash of salt on the grinds before I brew. Makes it taste so smooth and rich. Yum!!!!!!! |

I have a Melitta Fast Brew 12cup (yeah right) that uses a #4 cone filter.
I use 6 "rounded" (aka full without seeing how much I can keep on the scoop) standard coffee measures. The measure itself I bought at the store says "standard coffee measure", 1/8 cup and 29.5ml so pick the number you like from there. I drink almost any coffee, my morning daily is a store brand "house blend" but I also keep a small bag of a Sumatra and a Kona blend for when I want a better cup, the better stuff I buy <1/2 lb at a time so they are "fresh" |

I have a senseo coffee maker. Since I only drink one cup every now and then, this is perfect. Put one pod in and out comes one cup of coffee.

I have a very old Krups coffee maker. I use a gold filter. Tastes vary a lot among drinkers. I like a strong coffee like French Roast or Sumatra. I use one scoop for every 5 oz water. So 10 oz water go into the water well and yields about 8 oz of coffee. Some people use distilled water as they do not want any minerals to affect the taste. Fresh ground is usually tastes better from whole beans. Get a coffee grinder and grind from beans if you are so inclined.
There are even coffee forums I believe. |

How do you measure 5 oz of water? A cup is 8oz....the starbucks paks say to use 2 scoops for every 5 oz. I think...
Measure your coffee maker one time to see how many ounces it holds and how many scoops you'd use for a full pot. Then, if you make half that much, use half that much coffee, etc.... |

Marie, did you ever get/try the french press? Man I will NOT make coffee any other way ever again, and I've been through numerous coffeemakers - drip, espresso, the cold filtered stuff, the Melitta single-serve filters....
For MY tastebuds, this french pressed coffee beats everything else all to heck! ![]() I use one of my big mugs which holds about 14 ounces - I put that in the microwave filled with Brita-filtered water and nuke on High 2 minutes 20 seconds. Meanwhile I put 2 level scoops of whatever coffee I have (usually bought at Trader Joe's) into the press; when the water is hot, pour it in, and immediately set the timer for 4 minutes. When time's up, press down slowly on the plunger, don't shake the pot up, and pour "quietly" into your cup. It gets a nice "crema" on it like good espresso does and it's just delicious!

I have a Bunn, and I love it. A full pot in 3 minutes, steaming hot.
I usually do 6 c water and 3 scoops of coffee. I like mine strong and I use Folgers. |

First you have to start off with really good coffee. If you dont have good coffee beans, you wont have a good cup of coffee.
Second, you have to figure out if you like it strong, medium or weak. And then get a coffee that is one of those. And then you have to make the coffee and personalize it further as to how strong you make it by controlling the amount you brew a cup with. I buy my coffee in the grocery store, but I buy the gourmet style that have some flavor. Its whole bean, and I store it in the freezer to keep it fresher. If I make a whole pot, I probably half fill the coffee filter in the machine...probably 6 or 8 tablespoons. I believe the average is 2 tbs coffee per cup, but you will have to tweek that according to your tastes. |

Our roaster says that the perfect pot of coffee (standard 10/12 cup) uses 2 oz of beans.
That is just short of 1 dry measuring cup full of whole beans. When I first started making coffee with this measure, I thought it would be too much... (it was definately more than I had been using), but that is right about where it should be in order to get the full flavor of the bean to develop as the water drips through it. It is not necessarily STRONGER coffee... but more rich in depth. I love our french press, too. French press coffee has a very nice creamy feel in my mouth, like it is thicker than just plain ol drip coffee... One of my favorite french press drinks is iced with splenda and cream... yummy. |

We use a single cup coffee filter with unbleached coffee filters like this one
We grind the beans (never buy ground coffee) and make it one cup at a time with water at round 170 degrees. In terms of beans, locally roasted fair trade organic is best. |

Its Not A Problem! :)

Five table spoons per pot, Folgers. Nothing fancy, I'll add a little more coffee coffee sometimes and if I want it stronger I steal a cup before at the beginning.

Hi SP...
Standard formula for a full pot (regardless of how many cups it claims it makes) is 1/2 cup grounds per full pot. This is what Starbucks, and every other coffee joint, uses as a formula. You can grind it finer to use less grounds but it will be bitter not better. I not only love good coffee, I roast all our own as well. |

press it down and up once to circulate the beans, then let it sit for a couple mins, then press up and down again before u pour... add loads of cream yum if u want to make it into a latte, heat milk in a small milk carton, shake it like crazy and pour on top makes it lovely and frothy |

THIS is good to know. But are the cups listed on our coffee makers, actually ONE cup? I don't have a glass measuring thingy, so to measure 5 or 6 oz is not easy.
My coffee tastes bitter, horrible!......so I add more splenda, then it taste like plain ol muddy sugar water! Tired of it ![]() I will be back to addresss the others posters! Thank YOU! |
