Hey SP2...
If your pot brews slowly, then have her grind it more coursely - we use a Bunn which builds a pot in less than 4 minutes so our grind is med-fine.

Can she not bring whole beans & you grind it as you go? It would taste better...

I had French Pressed coffee at a friend's at Xmas and it tasted so different from regular coffee maker brew. So with all your comments on french press I just ordered me a Bodum Chambord 8 cup coffee press at Amazon. It had hundreds of positive comments left by customers, so seems to be a good choice. I'll find out in 5-9 days!

I've been using a moka pot lately. It's wonderful. It makes great coffee and there is no measuring involved so it comes out perfectly all the time.

Right now DH and I have been enjoying the flavor of Maxwell House Dark Roast. I just use the filtered water from the fridge and fill up water to the 10 cup line and add 4 scoops of a regular coffee to the unbleached paper filter. The coffeemaker we use had a regular and strong brew cycle. We use the strong brew.

I likes mah coffee strong!!

If I want it really strong...I use 5 scoops.

I've never been able to successfully brew Starbucks at home and get it to taste the same way as you get at the shop. Same with Tim Horton's coffee.

LOL Char.....finally done teaching for the year. Just about wiped me out with all the traveling I had to do. Hope, hope, hoping for my own room to teach science in this year!

But....I'mmmmmmm baaaaack!

Up early for the week to take a class to keep my teaching credentials current...who said teachers get the summer off?
Should be a good class...computer stuff. That always needs a reboot with all the wiki and blogs and stuff these days.

How you doin?

Seriously, do yourself a favor and go purchase a Keurig coffee machine. It takes these little K-cups and makes coffee equal or better than Starbucks, depending on what K-cups you choose.

No muss, no fuss, no grounds, no brainwork - just push a button. So worth it.

Doing great, thanks, coming up on 2 years of "retirement" which is a big fat laugh since I take care of Mom 24/7/365 - still, to steal an old adage, the worst day dealing with Mom is STILL better than the best day working! Well, mostly anyway.

Marie, did you get a french press (and try it) YET???

Flavored beans

On the subject of coffee... does anyone know how they add flavor to coffee beans? I see vanilla, mocha, hazelnut, etc. Do they add sugar? Does flavoring add carbs? Anyone know?

No sugar, no carbs - they use flavoring components (I forget what they're called, a friend has a coffee roasting shop and she showed me the big jugs of the different flavors - glycol maybe?) so you can have them if you like them!

Be careful. Some packaged flavored coffee does have added sugar.

The flavored beans are usually fine.

I was at my father-in-law's recently and his wife gave me some horrible flavored coffee creamer that turned out to be solid sugar. And I had to be polite and not spit it out after I'd had a slug. Horrible.

Stumbled onto this thread and had to laugh that there are 3 pages talking about 'how to make coffee'. For one cup? I vote French Press!!

Okay..this is my newest method, which I really love.

I have been roasting my own green beans with my Nesco Coffee Roaster..Love it..Then I grind the coffee..(I buy decaf beans)..

Lately, I have been using my stove top expresso machine and just using my home roasted beans..It only makes one cup..(I add cream), but it soooo flavorful and not as strong as expresso.

I'm betting you can do this with any regular bean and make a really tasty cup of coffee..

Coffee Method

In order to make a single cup and avoid dirtying too many utensils, I do this:

Into a heat-resistant glass measuring cup I add 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee, the fresher the better. Into it I pour enough water (which is just off the boil) to the one cup mark. I let it steep 3- 4 minutes, stirring once or twice to let the grounds get as much contact with the water as possible. I prepare a small cone with a paper filter, set it on top of my drinking cup, and pour the coffee through.

I taste the coffee and if it seems too strong, i will pour a little more hot water through the grounds in the cone.

How strong the coffee tastes mostly depends on the quality of your fresh grounds. I just drank a cup prepared this way with a Starbucks coffee and it's quite potent. I usually use a Trader Joe brand which never results in such a strong brew.

In my opinion the length of time the coffee steeps is very important. I used to let it steep just two minutes and it always tasted poor. One more minute made a big difference; some experts recommend 4 minutes total but experiment will tell you if that's right for you.

I like this steeping method because all of the grounds are in contact with the hot water the whole time, which makes for more complete, more even extraction.

Not much more to add, except we always put a little cinnamon on top of the grinds.
