How exactly does one eat a pomegranate?

You cut it open and consume the little seeds inside, right? Like on a spinach salad with chicken, and sprinkle some on top? I have been reading that they are a very healthy food, and am trying to find the carb count for them. ****** had a whole one listed at like 26 carbs, but only 1 gram of fiber. Is that right? I was hoping these would be a healthy addition to my diet if I had a small enough serving. Thanks!

I've had a few pomegranates in my time. Alton Brown uses a large bowl of water and peels the fruit in the water. Pop all the seeds out in the water and they fall to the bottom while the skin and pith float to the top making it easy to separate.

I put the seeds in a bowl and sprinkle with splenda; but that was before Atkins. Eating a whole one would really be too many carbs at one time.

I use calorieking.com: 26.4 carbs with 0.9 fiber. But for one ounce it would be 4.9 carbs and 0.2 fiber.

So... I think I would put a small amount mixed in Greek yogurt! Or as you mentioned on a salad.

Maria

Thanks Maria. That is the same info that was on ******, so I guess it is right. I was hoping there was more fiber in it, but I think I will add in a little at a time and see how it goes.

They grew everywhere when I was a kid. We would break them open, pull out a few of the seeds, put them in our mouths and "chew" on them a little to get the juice and spit the seed out. Only outside and only in playclothes because they stain like the dickens.

Until we moved (had a tree that was about 100 years old) I made jelly out of them (not LC). You do what Maria said, then smash them through on of those cone-shaped colander things and collect the juice in a bowl, and strain through cheescloth- then you have pure juice. You can do anything you want with it then. Yummy!

Like I said, we had a tree. Much too expensive in a store to use as many as you would need.

I just crack them open and go to town. They're a great snack! I cut it usually into 4 pieces, then just pick all the seeds out of one piece and eat as I go along. Yum!

You can also cut in half and whack the skin side with a wooden spoon, the seeds just fall out. I love them in salads. My grandma has a pomegranate tree and I have been thinking about replacing the cranberries with pomegranate seeds in my xmas holiday salad this year. Yumo!

Oh memories, my mum always put a Pomegranate in us girls stockings on Christmas day. She called them the "Ruby Fruit", loved them then and still do.

You can also cut off both ends, like you would an orange, and look for the white "divisions" - peel at those points and pop the seeds out.

And yes, I eat the whole seed, I don't spit out the white part!

I do it the Alton Brown way too...I always found it tough to figure out until I saw him do it

I eat maintenance type carbs (for PCOS, not weight loss) and I often split one with my two kiddos, who love pomegranate as well. I like it plain, on a salad (I even had some with a broccoli slaw/ranch dressing salad as a sub for dried sweetened cranberries), or stirred into greek yogurt

Here's how I did it on Pom #1:

1) Cut in half
2) Use teaspoon to spoon out seeds and eat 'em, enjoy 'em.
3) Wash red spots off of wall, computer monitor, keyboard, desk, desk lamp, pencil holder, water glass, papers.

Here's how I did it on Pom #2:

1) Remind self that eating Pom's in office is not a good idea.
2) Cut in 1/4's.
3. Use end of potato peeler which is perfect size for popping out seeds one at a time. Enjoy because MAN are these good.
4) Wash red spots off of kitchen wall, backsplash, coffee maker, cabinets.

There was less cleanup with method #2. MAN are those things good!

If you pop the seeds out under water you won't have such a mess. Then put them in a bowl and pick them up carefully with your fingers and skip step 4.

I truly do appreciate this tip - more than you know! I think I will buy a few more before they go away.

2nding this!!! I used to fear the mess of pomegranate eating a bit until I discovered the Alton Brown technique of popping the seeds out underwater The white pithy/membranous stuff also floats to the top and it makes it easier to separate out *just* the seeds.
