Splenda question

I only have Splenda packets. when a recipe calls for 1/2 cup of Splenda do I open enough packets to equal 1/2 cup or are they sweeter than the pourable Splenda?

Thanks,
Michele

Each packet = 2 teaspoons of sweetness. There are 48 teaspoons in a cup, so you'd need 24 teaspoons worth of sweetness, which would be 12 packets. More or less!

They have less bulker in them than the pourable kind so yes, they are sweeter, measure for measure, than the pourable Splenda.

Hi Michelle...
If you have access to a Big Lots! they are selling Splenda packs for $1.00 which were designed for times you need more Splenda but not a lot of extra volume.

Each pack contains five packages and each is equal to 1 cup of Splenda. They contain less carbs than the packets, or the pourable Splenda (yes, Splenda has .9 carbs per package).

I like them for cooking/baking better than the pourable (because of the lower carb count). Since they are at Big Lots, it probably means they are being discontinued (or have been) by Splenda. They look like they are Kool-ade boxes with a picture of a pitcher on them...but they are indeed Splenda and at a great price. We bought a bunch...

Yes, it is definite, the Splenda Quick Packs are being discontinuted!!!!

Larry, aren't ya glad I left ya some!!! I bought all they had the first time or 2 I found them there.

That is $1.00 per box, each box contains 5 packages. As Larry said, each package is equal to 1 cup of "sugar". So you can measure it in tsp increments... ie: 1/4 tsp = 1/4 cup, 1/2 tsp = 1/2 cup, etc, or use a whole package for 1 cup. The hardest to measure is 1/3cup.

Nah, just empty the packet onto a mirror and divide it into thirds with a razor blade!

Here is my close enough for horseshoes and hand garnades answer billie.

1/3 cup(1/3 tsp splenda QP) = 5 1/3 T. sweetness

5/8 cup(5/8 tsp splenda QP) = 6 T sweetness

2/3 T. of sweetness will never make a huge difference if so make measures scant.

Thanks Billie...
And we left you some Dreamfields Pasta (Linguini and Elbow). We bought 15 boxes of the linguini & 5 of the Elbow since it keeps forever. We had never had it before, and use so little per meal (about 1/4 box) that it will last a while...it's not with the rest of the Pastas but an aisle over toward the front door from them.

There is approximately 1 teaspoon of Splenda in the Quick packs, so it's pretty quick and easy to measure if your measuring spoons are subdivided small enough.

Thanks Kevin! I think I have done a 1/3 equiv before, but couldn't/can't remember what I did.

Why thank you Larry. I haven't seen the Dreamfields there yet. I really haven't decided if I even want to try the Dreamfields, but since ya left me some, I may try some if they are still there when I get there. I may go today, but not sure if I'll make it or not. I live in the country, and don't go to town everyday, must less to Big Lots everyday.
Thanks for giving me directions as to where to find them. Maybe I just overlooked it before. Or they have gotten it in since I was there last. I don't know. I'll check it out anyway, maybe I'll try it. At least to have on hand.

I actually saw an advert in the second most recent Eating Well mag (I think) for the new Splenda tabs, well, new to North America at least. I suspect they think these will sell better (as they've done quite well in Europe and Australia) than the quick packs. Stupid of them to market the quickpacks as if their only use was in KoolAid.

They USED to market those tablets way back when - I remember ordering them when I was doing WW and was working as IT director for a pediatrics practice which was in 2000 so it was a good 8 years ago. I THINK I bought them from Netrition but it could've been someplace else.

Then they quit marketing them here but I could get my stepdaughter, who lives in England, to ship some to me.

I bought some a while back ago now here again, and again if memory serves I THINK it was from Netrition - but I could be wrong - anyway they're very handy to carry in your purse and the little plastic dispenser spits out one at a time, but they're certainly NOT gonna take the place of the QuickPacks - too bad, those were handy!

I managed to latch onto 48 boxes of them at Big Lots though so that will probably last me the rest of my natural life, since I really don't use them that often!

And like Kris - NO, I won't send anybody else any! LOL!!

Yeah, back in 2000 those were imported (by Carbsmart first, IIRC) from Australia and England, they weren't made in North America (neither Canada nor USA), not then. Then a number of imports got dumped on by (a) Splenda/McNeill and (b) the FDA, over labeling technicalities (can you say licensing and marketing territoriality?).

Now they are back, but "legal", as in Splenda/McNeill is the owner/seller.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I'm hoping a legal liquid Splenda can't be far behind, but I expect that it will be very diluted, like liquid Sugartwin is, up here (1:4 ratio, so for 1C sweetness you must use 1/4C of the liquid). Any takers on a bet on that?

McNeil told me that they had no plans to make a liquid Splenda available to the general public. But that was a year or 2 ago. They could change their mind.

No bets on that Jude!

I don't like the tabs at all-they don't dissolve well in cold liquids and are even slow in coffee. They have had them in all the groceries around here for awhile.
