exploding spaghetti squash

okay, i am aware that this can happen and i always poke some holes in this type of vegie. last night i went to remove the squash from the oven, and the minute i touched it, bam. the entire contents erupted all over the oven. i burned my palm but not a big deal. i promise you, the shell was in half and completely empty. if these things were not so hard, i'd cut it in half prior to cooking but i think i need a sawzall! anyway, be careful. next time i will make sure the holes go deeper....or something!

Yikes! I've never baked one whole before. I always cut in half, put face down in some water in a correll baking dish, cover and put in microwave for about 15-20 minutes. Not worth getting hurt over!

I do the same. Just get a really good knife, or even better, an electric one!!

I just made spaghetti squash last night. I hate cutting them open, they are so hard. I just slowly wiggle my chef's knife into it, then bang it on the cutting board which kinda cracks it open. It's not pretty, but it's easier to cook, and I like to take the seeds out first. Hope you weren't burned too badly!

I always buy very small ones since they are a little easier to work with while cutting. I couldn't even get an electric knife through one of those things! I never considered trying to cook it whole, and now I know not to!

I hope you weren't too hurt!

OOooo, so sorry you had a squashsplosion!!

I cook mine whole, but in the microwave - but when I poke a hole into it I always make sure it goes clear into the cavity in the middle, in a couple different places around the squash.

Hope your hand is OK!

I usually cook mine whole in the microwave and poke a lot of holes in it before cooking it. But I have had a couple explode over the last few years. It blows the microwave door open and there is squash all over everything!

Yikes! A squashbomb! It must have been an awful experience, though, and I'm very sorry your hand was burned.

I also cook mine in the microwave. Before I cook it, though, I use a sharp steak knife to stab the squash deeply all over several times.

Squash alot......

I may have suggested this to you all before. When I buy a large one
I always ask the produce man to cut in in half. They are happy to do
it for you and they have big knives and are pretty strong guys.
Then you just wrap in Saran and cook it when you need it. I always
nuke mine.

I had this happen when I microwaved one. It exploded with such force that it blew the door open on my microwave and spewed squash fragments all over the kitchen! Good thing I was living in a rental. Seriously though, I had a 2 year old at the time and it was just a miracle that he wasn't anywhere near the microwave when it blew up. I shudder to think of how badly he could have been burned.

I still nuke these (after taking an almost year long hiatis ). I make sure I puncture them in a billion places with a very sharp knife. I used to just pierce them with a fork, but now I make larger cuts to allow the steam to escape.

They should put warning labels on Spaghetti Squash!
