Shake or Smoothie Help (?)
I'm thinking about getting into shakes or smoothies.
It may be just the thing for me to start having for breakfasts &/or snacks. But, I know nothing about them... What do you use to blend them? A regular blender or other kitchen devices? What do you put in them? (I really have no clue.) ![]() I'd love for people to share some recipes. I love berries and I know they sell some kind of protein powder at Costco. (But again, I know nothing about it.) Any information, help, and recipes would surly be appreciated. -Thanks |

I made my first one yest and I was not impressed so I'd add the question--is using whey protein powder an acquired taste? I'm always seeing where people say their shakes are really good but I was definitely disappointed in mine.
I used my blender and it mixed up great--very thick and smooth but the taste was barely "okay". I used a 4 oz container of Dannon carb control yogurt-strawberry flavor, a little Calorie Countdown milk, DaVinci's strawberry SF syrup, fresh sliced strawberries, a scoop of Designer whey protein-french vanilla flavor (that's the only flavor I have) and a tiny bit of xanthan gum. It wasn't cold enough so I added a few ice cubes. Still not cold enough so I put in the freezer for about 30 minutes. It looked really good but I was disappointed with the flavor. I added more strawberries and more DaVinci's but it definitely was nothing special. It was filling. But I would have enjoyed the yogurt and strawberries alone much more. I really love high carb milkshakes and smoothies but maybe I was expecting too much. Rebecca, Alot of people use a "magic bullet" but they are pricey and my blender did just fine. This is one of my favorites from LindaSue's website. She has other really good smoothie recipes on her site. I use my blender when making smoothies.
CHOCOLATE-ALMOND PROTEIN SMOOTHIE 1 scoop whey protein powder, chocolate flavor, 1/3 cup 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum 1 1/2 cups cold water 1 tablespoon heavy cream 1/4 cup Da Vinci sugar free syrup, vanilla, almond or chocolate flavor 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 1/4 cup granular Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda 2-4 drops liquid SweetLeaf stevia, optional * Ice cubes In a small bowl, stir together the protein powder and xanthan gum. Pour the water, cream, syrup, extract and sweetener into a blender. Blend for a few seconds. Add the protein powder and blend briefly. With the blender on the highest speed, start feeding ice cubes, one at a time, through the top of the blender until the drink is very thick. Adjust sweetener, if necessary. Makes 1 serving * The sweetness of Splenda has a tendency to disappear in really cold things. Adding a tiny bit of Stevia helped boost the sweetness. Add to taste. With granular Splenda: Per Serving: 181 Calories; 8g Fat; 18g Protein; 10g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 9g Net Carbs With liquid Splenda: Per Serving: 157 Calories; 8g Fat; 18g Protein; 4g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 3g Net Carbs This is one of my favorites. I used half chocolate and half French vanilla syrup in mine. This makes 2 tall glasses. You could cut the carbs in half by only drinking 1 glass. I strongly suggest that you do use the xanthan gum in this recipe. It thickens it by suspending the crushed ice and lots of air bubbles. Without xanthan gum, you'll end up with more like a slushy where the ice ends up in a big icy chunk in the glass. http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/snack_recipes.html |

My current fave is Syntrax Nectar Fuzzy Navel whey protein powder, 1 scoop, 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup pomegranate juice (I buy it at Trader Joe's), and 1/2 cup kefir - I just use my little hand blender and mix it right in the glass. I love the taste of it!

I like the Myoplex Carb Sense, Chocolate Cream.
I use it as a meal replacement when I need to eat something but I just don't feel like cooking and there's nothing legal in the frig that I can just grab. I mix it up with 1 cup of water, a spoon of instant coffee, a couple of packets of Splenda, a splash of heavy cream and a cup of ice cubes. Mix it up in the blender; it's filling, satisfies the sweet tooth and packed with lots of good nutrition. |

I've just started to drink smoothies this week. I use frozen summer berries, whatever fresh fruit I have in the house & a splash of juice to make it "drinkable". Tastes good & cheaper than buying it ready made. What is whey powder and what does it do?

I'm doing Induction again. Any ideas on how to make a shake or smoothie without berries? I have several different fruit flavors of DaVinci syrups. Do you think those would provide enough taste?
The idea of a broccoli or spinach shake/smoothie doesn't exactly enthrall me. ![]() |

I use Designer Whey protein powder (Trader Joe's). I usually buy Vanilla or Vanilla Praline. I add egg substitute or yogurt- (much more filling). I throw in a handful of ice and some frozen berries. To get it going I add Almond Breeze, Calorie Countdown or on many occasions, I have also used orange Crystal Light as well as other flavors. The possibilities are endless.

My favorite is the Butterfinger Frosty recipe I got eons ago.
* Exported from MasterCook * Butterfinger Frosty Recipe By :Angy Serving Size : 1 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Beverages Snacks Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1/8 cup cream 1/8 cup half and half 1 scoop Chocolate Flavored Whey Protein Powder 1 package sugar substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups crushed ice 1 Tablespoon peanut butter Whirl all together in food processor. And here's a few other ideas I've collected over the years from different sites and postere.... * Exported from MasterCook * Protein Shake Ideas Recipe By : Serving Size : 1 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Beverages Breakfast Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- use Optimum Nutrition 100 % Whey Protein Powder, both chocolate & vanilla are great. You can mix them with: - water and a splash of cream OR - Crystal light or SF Tang to make an orange julius type drink OR - 1 tsp of instant coffee and a sprinkle of cinnamon to make a capuccino like shake. - I use different extracts and Davinci syrups to create flavor combos. - After induction, you can throw in a few frozen berries in as well. - A few ice cubes give it a bit more texture in the blender also. I drink 2 or 3 of them a day as in between meal snacks or as a beverage with breakfast. It is a great way to make sure you are getting adequate amounts of protein, this is especially important as your appetite decreases with ketosis. If you are working out you really need the protein to fuel your body. PISTACHIO: ice, water, vanilla protein powder, a lil SF Pistachio Pudding mix. BUTTERSCOTCH: ice, water, vanilla protein powder, a lil SF Butterscotch Pudding mix. This could also be done with chocolate protein powder. WHITE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE: ice, ater, van. protein powder, lil WCM SF pudding mix. The varieties are endless!*S* from labeam: I keep them simple and throw in whatever sounds good at the time. My Basic starter is always the same (sorry I don't measure anything) - shot of cream - 2 packets of equal - 2 scoops Whey PP - ice... additional ingredients: - banana extract and walnuts (my current fave) - few frozen berries and vanilla (if I can spare the carbs for the day) - Chocolate Davinci syrup and almonds - coffee, Davinci chocolate syrup, Davinci carmel syrup, and nuts (Snickers) - cinnamon extract and vanilla - SF pudding powder-many flavors- about a T, I'd guess - SF jello powder-again many flavors - Rasp syrup and banana extract Some people put raw egg in them to make creamier, but yuck...I just use extra PP. CHUNKY MONKEY: Chocolate Protein Pdr. dash Banana extract Could add some nut butter (peanut, almond, etc.) DREAMSICLE: Vanilla protein Pdr. 1 T. SF Orange flavored Citrucel dash Vanilla extract WATERMELON CREAM: Vanilla protein Pdr. 1/2 tsp. Crystal Light Watermelon Strawberry powder CHOCOMINT: Chocolate protein Pdr. Cold coffee/ or Instant granules Peppermint Extract EGGNOG: Vanilla protein Pdr, dash of Vanilla extract dash of Cinnamon and Nutmeg lil cream CHOCOLATE COVERED RASBERRY: Chocolate Protein Pdr. 1/2 tsp. Crystal Light Raspberry PEACH FROST: Vanilla Protein Pdr. Crystal Light Refresher: Peach, Passion Fruit, Raspberry PISTACHIO: ice, water, vanilla protein powder, a lil SF Pistachio Pudding mix. BUTTERSCOTCH: ice, water, vanilla protein powder, a lil SF Butterscotch Pudding mix. This could also be done with chocolate protein powder. WHITE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE: ice, ater, van. protein powder, lil WCM SF pudding mix. The varieties are endless!*S* |

I found a recipe on this site - don't remember who posted it or where - but it is tasty and filling. Like Jackie, I'm not crazy about the taste of most of these protein powders, flavored or not. Anyway, this one uses:
1/4 cup cream 14 cup water (or use 1/2 cup CC milk) 1/4 cup cottage cheese 1 Tablespoon protein powder, vanilla or plain 1 egg dash of vanilla sweetener to taste about 7 ice cubes Blend on low for about 30 seconds, then high. You can add a few strawberries if your diet allows, or 1/2 tsp (or to taste) of coffee crystals, or a tablespoon of cocoa powder. You do NOT taste either the cottage cheese or the protein powder. I have come to prefer plain whey or milk and egg protein powder and then flavor them myself. Ginny |

I use a cup of Carb Countdown Milk, 1 tbsp of flaxmeal, 1/4 cup of frozen berries that I buy at Sam's club, and 1 scoop of either vanilla or banana protein powder. I use GNC's protein powder. I have tried the vanilla Designer Whey and I cannot stand the taste of it.
I ended up mixing it with the GNC powder to use it up. (I sometimes throw in a tsp of the orange or berry metamucil if I need it too!)I mix it all in a blender and then throw some crushed ice in and blend. I drink one of these just about every day. |
