Remember Steak-ums?
Maybe this isn't a new idea, but...
I bought some the other day (not Steak-um brand, but the same thing). Today for lunch I put a low carb tortilla in a pan and layered American cheese on it, heated it till it the tortilla was toasted and the cheese melted and in a seperate pan, cooked (and patted with paper towel, they're really greasy) the steak-ums, then layered them on the tortilla, salted it a little and then rolled it up to make a steak wrap. It was absolutely delicious. My dh who just started joining me on lc woe loved it. You could add onions, peppers, whatever you like, as well. Anyway, they're cheap and filling and very good, in my opinion. |

This sounds really good.... I found some thinly sliced steaks at Albertsons on sale a couple of weeks ago and they would work great. Now I just have to re-discover LC tortillas. What kind did you use Maggieb43?

Hi Sooz
I use Mission Carb Balance soft taco size. I get them at Wal-mart and they're 7 net carbs per tortilla. They taste pretty good and there isn't a lot of soy in them, like some others. (Soy interferes with my thyroid.) They also make whole wheat fajita size which has 4 carbs. I make little pizzas out of those or toast them and use them as crackers, "dippers," ya know? A little too small for a steak wrap, though, in my opinion.

I use Joseph's oat bran/flax Lavash bread I get at Walmart. It's a flatbread, half a piece is plenty. 1/2= 7 carbs, 3 fiber.
Warm it very gently, it gets crispy very quickly. I like mine with mushrooms, onions, and provelone. Hubby gets red and green peppers and substitutes deluxe american cheese. Add a salad and some jello fluff for dessert for a Friday night winner. |

My question is - what is the consistency of the bread? And of course, is it expensive? Last edited by Sooz; 01-18-2007 at 12:55 PM.. Reason: Quote didn't come out right! |

I paid $1.88 for the lavash bread at Wal-Mart. The texture is very soft and pliable. Here's the review from my site:
![]() LAVASH BREAD I found this flat bread at Wal-Mart in the deli department. It's called Joseph's Lavash Bread and the price is $1.88 for four giant pieces, 9x11 inches, which would be great for making wraps or used as tortillas. A serving is half a piece. It tastes very good, as far as bread goes, with no off flavors like many low carb tortillas and breads sometimes have. I'm a little surprised that the net carbs are so low considering the ingredients so I'd use these with caution. However, when I ran the numbers from the package through the Hidden Carb Calculator, it said that there are really only 3 carbs per serving. It could be that the calories, fat or protein counts are off though. I couldn't find anything online about these and the company doesn't appear to have a website. Ingredients: water, wheat gluten, corn starch, flax, oat fiber, whole wheat flour, oat bran, isolated soy protein, soy flour, soy oil, sesame flour, salt, sodium acid pyrophosphate, dextrose, sodium bicarbonate, calcium propionate, fumaric acid, potassium sorbate, monodigycerides, sucralose, sodium metabisulfite, yeast 1 serving = 7g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 4g Net Carbs |

You could also use a revolution roll shaped like a hoagie. They're more friendly to the newer low-carbers...only thing "iffy" for induction is a dab of cottage cheese.
But I'm lazy, so I'll stick to the Lavash. We eat the steakum wrap maybe once a month. Friday is my traditional "Cook's Day Off" so we do fun, easy stuff. This week is Hot wings/salad, next week is probably steakum wrap with Sausage-pumpkin soup and a tray of veggie strips. I use less than half the sausage called for and thin it a bit with extra chicken stock. Pairs very well with the steak and cheese. LindaSue, I sometimes carefully crisp the Lavash bread in the toaster, then brush with a tiny drop of olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Good Cracker. |

I haven't actually used the lavash bread for anything yet. I just spied it at Wal-Mart one day and had to see what it was like. I took a little nibble to see what it tasted like and promptly packed the rest away in the freezer. I'm thinking about using a small piece as an individual pizza crust next week when I make "real" pizza for my family.

Ah steak'ums!
I make 'philly cheesesteak pizza' with them. Pizza crust is 'most awesome pizza' (it's on linda sue's site) top with a bit of pizza sauce. Saute steakums, green peppers, onion in a little oil and put on top. cover with shredded mozerralla and bake til cheese melts. THE BEST! |

We usually just have the meat on a plate - sauteed with onions and peppers and topped with shredded cheese. I never thought to use a lc tortilla - duh! DH loves this meal and will love it even more in a wrap! I've got all the stuff so this will be on the menu this week!

Darn it, I threw out the box...
...put the rest in a ziploc bag, sorry. Anyway, I got them at Wal-mart in the frozen food section. I believe they're also referred to as "shaved steak." Maybe someone else will chime in here with a brand name. (Y'know I asked if they had "Steak-ums," guy knew just what I was talking about...)

We don't even bother with the tortilla. We put a slice of provolone and some grilled onions on an individual steakum and just roll it up. Your fingers get a little greasy, but that's what napkins are for.

I looked for Steak-Umms at Wal-Mart today and they don't sell that brand. They only have their Great Value brand. There just happened to be an open package sitting there so I took a look at them. Theirs come already cut into thin strips so you can't use them to roll up or anything like that. They actually looked like little steaks in the package but if you looked closely you could see that they were strips of steak rolled up into the shape of a steak.

Last week when I started South Beach, I went shopping I bought some along with some frozen pepper/onion stir fry that Save A Lot had. I'm not a big egg person, so I fix that every morning for breakfast. But you're right, they are greasy as heck, so darn good for a quick breakfast.

Yeah, Wal-Mart likes making all the money from their brand. Most of the regular grocery stores near me (Shopper's Food Warehouse, Safeway & Giant) carry steak-um brand.

Same here. As I cook them, I lay them on papertowels and put another on top. Then I pat them as I'm putting them on a plate. Then I put the cheese on and stick in the microwave for about 20 seconds to re-heat and melt the cheese.

I like them but don't like the clean up on the stovetop after cooking them!
I see the point about the paper towels for after... what do you do about during? |

I just cook 2 at a time and pour the grease off before cooking 2 more. I also use a splatter screen and that really helps.
