So Benefiber is the same as what everyone is talking about...I bought some of this for a problem I was having in the bathroom and it didn't help so I just threw it out...
I only took it once a day for a few days in the morning so don't know if it helped with cravings. If this is what you are talking about maybe I will buy it again and pay more attention.

No, Benefiber is partially hydrolyzed guar gum, NOT inulin.

Great, Bev-Ann, I will be waiting for a report. I think this stuff is going to work great, to lose my last 15 pounds, then to ease me into maintenance.

Bev-Ann, what brand of inulin are you buying? What should I be looking for and where? I'm in Canada, too...

I buy Chicolin at an organic supermarket in Calgary ($8.99 for 250g). Others here are using the NOW brand although I've never seen that one in stores. However, I have seen the Fibre Choice wafers that some have mentioned in health food stores.
If you're going to buy it in powder form, just make sure there are no other ingredients in it. It should be nothing but inulin or oligofructose. The NOW brand does say that it has fructose in it, but we've determined that it's not enough to make a difference so it's ok for that product.

I hear you! I was just browsing Shopper's Drugmart for inulin something, the only one I found was Ultra Fiber Chewables, 700mg of inulin per tablet. Unfortunately, the first other ingredient was dextrose Guess I'll go to a health food store.

Someone mentioned another powder made by Metamucil called FiberSure but I couldn't find it in any of the stores here. If you do see it where you are, it would good too, as long as it's unflavoured and SF.

Allo, GP! I've bought a "locally" packed (on-Island, that is) Inulin, Preactive is the brand name, though I haven't looked recently. IIRC, 11.00 for 350g, somewhat comparable to the Chicolin brand. Health Food Stores are the place to locate either of these brands.

The Preactive label includes a breakdown (these are NOT added ingredients) of bulk Inulin, which reads:
  • Inulin +/- 90%
  • Disaccharides +/- 5.8%
  • Glucose +/- 1.0%
  • Fructose +/- 5.0%

and
  • Inulin (fructooligosaccharide) a natural prebiotic, water extracted and purified functional food ingredient from chicory root.

Hope this is helpful information.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder, doesn't the pdx work like inulin? I mean, bluntly, has anyone ingested a small regular dose of a thickened pdx syrup or a pdx candy to check the appetite suppressant effects?

No problem! I'm sure the people in the U.S. would find the info useful.
And, you're very welcome!

Yes, I did a little experiment and also found info on the web regarding studies that were done with polyd and xylitol. It would take too much polyd to have the same effect as the inulin and would end up being more expensive.
The posts are in the thread I started in the Vitamins and Supplements sub-forum:

Inulin as an Appetite Suppressant

I found a U.S. online site that had pure inulin for $15/500g. That's more than I'm paying for Chicolin and I don't have to order it online and pay for shipping plus currency conversion. They also had pure oligofructose as a separate item, which is what Chicolin is. It was $20/500g. Sheesh!

Finally got my Yacon syrup in the mail yesterday, it took awhile. I started taking it right away, 1 t before dinner last night. Took another 1st thing this morning, will post if I think it is helping with appetite. I had benefiber on hand, I know it isn't the right kind of fiber but have been using that in my protein shake since reading this thread. I think just adding some fiber helped me to feel full longer so am anxious to see if this actually works on the appetite suppression. If so, then will order some of the chicolin.

Bev-Ann, did you get info other than the product label to determine that? I was wondering, because label info for "small servings" can be hard to go by, since the averaging can be so misleading. (It certainly looks as if there's almost no fructose from what the label says.)

We're going by the label on the NOW brand. It distinctly says Other Ingredients: Fructose.

I found in a health store here in Vancouver a nice inulin supplement (I think). It's a purple bottle from Re-cleanse and it's Fiber chewables: organic, contains inulin, flax and dried berries, sweetened with xylitol and 6 tablets (recommended daily dose) = 5 g of fiber. They are delicious but I don't know if I forget about food because of the tablets, because... well, because every time I take them I forget about the need to keep track of this!

I haven't actually done any baking with it yet, but it tastes almost exactly like molasses right out of the jar, just not as thick. When I do get around to using it for baking, it will only be in small amounts to replace brown sugar (1 cup sugar sub + 1 tbsp yacon syrup per cup brown sugar).

I read this thread the other day and went out and bought the Fiber Choice Weight Management Tablets Sugar Free Strawberry. I never get Hungry but I start wanting Nuts at Night and have been snacking way too much. I took 2 Tablets for the first time on Tuesday Night and it is Thursday and I still have no desire to eat.

I made Myself eat yesterday and like I posted I never feel hungry but I had Steak for Dinner and ended up giving over half to the Dogs I just had no interest in food at all.

The big test was last night I keep Almonds on My Nightstand and I never picked them up once. So I am not sure if it is the Tablets or power of suggestion but I will keep taking them since I need the fiber anyway.

I paid $12.89 I think at Target for 90 Tablets I checked Walmart and they were only 2 cents cheaper.

I am like you Jann, not sure if the yacon syrup is actually helping suppress my appetite or if it is just the power of suggestion but I'll take the help anyway it comes.

Buffy, how are you finding the taste of the yacon syrup? Does it taste almost exactly like molasses to you too? So far you're the only person I've seen post that you're using it.

About a Tbsp of my Caramel Sauce, Inulin Based MAY work as an appetite suppressant (though it sets off my oral sweet triggers big time, something I need to watch out for) but it DEFINITELY acts as a soluble fiber or um ur laxative...Delicious, but dangerous!

Yes, the yacon syrup does taste exactly like molasses, just not as thick. I really enjoy it, just eat a spoon full. Today, I ate 3, 1 as soon as I got up, 1 about 1 pm and 1 about 5:00 this evening. Was satisfied with a small portion of dinner, will see if I want anything else tonight or not. Praying that it will continue to suppress appetite.
