Coffee/Carb Question

I have really been enjoying iced coffee this summer. But I just (finally) got Dana Carpender's book from the library, and saw where she said that a 12 oz. cup of coffee has 1 carb. Is this right? Yikes! (I know it's only 1 carb, but it's soooo hot outside, and those iced coffees taste soooo good--who can stop with just one? Or two?)

According to the USDA National Nutrient Database,

Coffee, brewed from grounds, prepared with tap water, decaffeinated
A 12 oz. cup contains:

.36 g protein
.36 g ash
0 carbs

That's it.

That's where I prefer to get my nutritional info too - interestingly Fitday says a cup (6 oz. I think) is 1 carb.

Personally, I don't count it - but I'm also on maintenance. If I was induction or OWL and NOT losing, I might start counting it and see if it made any difference....

I never bothered to count coffee carbs and I have always drank alot of coffee all day.
The only thing I pay attention to is what goes into the coffee. Packets of splenda can really add up (count about 1 carb per packet), so I now use Fiberfit. And the calories and carbs from cream or half&half or milk can really add up.

The USDA site used to say that restaurant-brewed espresso had about 1 carb per cup but I see that they've changed it to zero carbs. The information on the USDA site isn't always accurate and they do sometimes update their information. I've gone back many times and found that the numbers are completely different for things that I'd looked up there before. However, since most other nutritional info sites get their info from the USDA, it's still the best resource we have. FitDay gets their numbers from the USDA as does MasterCook.

Netrition gets their data from the USDA also.

I did a quick search to see if I could find a carb count for coffee beans. The only ones I could find were chocolate covered beans. No help.

If we could get a carb count for the beans it might help to paint a picture of how many carbs (if any) dissolve and transfer to the liquid.

Honestly, even if you are doing the strictest Induction... I would not worry and obsess over 1 carb in a cup of coffee.

Flavored coffee is actually flavored with an alcohol-based flavoring so it doesn't have any more carbs than regular coffee UNLESS it's those "International Coffees" type things, in which case check the ingredients labels.

I had a great time one day at a friend's place of business - she owns a coffee roastery - sniffing all the flavoring bottles! LOL!

I'd be willing to bet they're adding something to it then, I'd surely ask!
