Deep Fryer
Okay - just had my birthday this week and my folks bought me a small deep fryer. Now I need suggestions on what to do with it (legal foods, that is).
Please help out with ideas!!!!! I wanna "play" on Sunday! |

We bought a deep fryer, used it once and returned it!
The whole house smelled like fried food as well as our clothing! We haven't had fried food for MANY MANY years so I guess we weren't used to that smell. |

I made this neat chicken the other night in mine. I took boneless chicken breast seasoned it with poultry seasoning, garlic salt, and pepper. Deep fried until done. Really good. Try it.

I have never owned a deep fryer. I really have never fried much food. What is the advantage of a deep fryer over oil in a pan? I have considered buying a deep fryer but don't know if I would get enough use from it. Are they easy to use?

I love my deep fryer. We use it for frying chicken wings, zuccini, yellow squash, mushrooms, eggplant, etc. We really like to do a few different things at once for variety. We batter mostly by dipping in egg then ground pork rinds or a combination of pork rinds and grated parm cheese. Some folks just use the parm cheese to coat. Keep in mind onions have quite a few carbs--that's why we don't do onion rings (may make an exception when vidalias come in season though). I'm not sure but I would think sweet potatoes have quite a few carbs too. We also use it fry fish but I've started doing that out on our deck (we have electricity there so I still use the fryer)--fish oil smell isn't something I like to wake up to.

For the meatballs, I just use hamburger meat, some spices like onion pwd, chili pwd, etc; depends on my mood and some parmesan cheese and an egg or two, depending on the amount of meat. Then I make them into the meatballs, small ones, and then drop in the deep fryer. It makes them come out crispy on the outside and still moist on the inside. It's a nice change for meatballs and good to just dip in sauce and snack on. (Sorry, I don't really measure things much.) The parmesan is the kind in the can that I use.
They are also good if you add a box of onion soup mix or some chopped green onions or chives before making into meatballs. For onion rings, I use coconut flour or chef's blend flour or a combination of nut flours. The coconut flour seems to make them turn out the crispiest. I dip the onion rings into egg first and then into the flour mixture. I know some people use carbquick also, but I haven't adjusted my taste buds to that product yet. I have noticed that they will cook really fast, so I use a lower heat than with regular onion rings. |

I dip chicken tenders in an egg wash and then coat with Carbquick. Yummy with Ranch Dressing!

Great ideas!
Thanks to all of you that responded with suggestions! And thanks SugarBabi for the meatballs ideas. I need something different and those sound great to snack on.
I don't use any flours though, so will forego the onion rings. But will try the chicken tenders using egg/parmesan and pork rinds. I was jsut afraid that all the "goodie" would come off once it hit the oil. Oh well...Tomorrow will be experimentation day! I cook every Sunday for the week to make it easier on me. |

Just last night, I dusted some fresh shrimp with Carbquik and deep fried them... They were delicious! I made Carbquik beer batter and fried some that way also, but didn't like them as well as the others. The batter held too much oil.
The main thing I use my deep fryer for is wings. I make my wing sauce with Texas Pete's hot sauce, melted butter and bottled Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. It's awesome. |

Now that I'm maintaining, I don't use my deep fryer nearly as much because of the fat. But in the past we loved hot wings fried naked and topped after frying with equal parts melted butter and Frank's Red Hot Sauce. Also, if you don't do any type of "flour", I found that cauliflower and mushrooms fried "naked" and dipped in ranch dressing, are just as delicious as the battered ones.
