Does PolyD cause stomach distress?
I made Aunt Ruth's Pecan Cake on Saturday and it is wonderful but has the same effect on me as maltitol. (Gas, rumbles, runs, and more rumbles Sorry TMI) Do other people have this problem as well? Or would it be the carbquick that's causing it? This is the first that I have used these two products and I am very disappointed if I won't be able to tolerate it.

Yes. When I eat anything with MiniCarb chocolate chips, it's almost like eating maltitol for me. MiniCarb chocolate chips have a lot of polydextrose in them.

The Minicarb Chocolate Chips used to affect me the same way. The effects were not as severe as with the SAs, but still uncomfortable. I ate a few chocolate chips daily, and eventually my body got used to them.

The Poly-D really kicks my butt if I eat too much of it! Same symptoms you're describing.
But that's OK because it reminds me to NOT overeat! That pecan cake is so dang good I'd be eating WAY too much of it if it wasn't for the fact that I know what it will do to me...the first time I made it, there was a lot that ran over the pan and onto a silicone-mat-lined baking sheet beneath - the runover baked up and tasted really good - TOO good! I ate a bunch of it and suffered the consequences.Char

The first time I used PolyD was a disaster. The recipe called for 3/4 c. for an 8x8 product and I ate about 4 pcs. Yikes! If you ever need to get cleaned out just eat a bunch of PolyD. I learned then and there to cut way down on the amount I use and now it doesn't bother me. And since I ordered 10 lbs. of the stuff I'm going to use!

Poly-D does the same to me too. I hate getting gas, because normally on low-carb that just never ever happens to me anymore and I like that very much. A bloated lower abdomen on my middle-aged body is not attractive, especially since that is my weak area to begin with!
I have not tried Carbquik yet, but judging from other people's reactions, it's not really a problem for most. I also have trouble with Dreamfields pasta. I noted it has sorbitol in it and I get violently ill if I eat too much of that stuff. ![]()

Thanks for all your replies. And here I was starting to think PolyD must be some kind of miracle so that I could have my baked goodies again. I realize now that this kind of thing will have to be for special occasions only and not a daily diet. I'm better off keeping my nose out of these 'yummy' threads.

I know how you feel, Muffie. I have some really good low-carb cookbooks with bake mixes and stuff, so I really am not missing out on too much, although I truly wish I could handle the poly-D. It sounds so good, but for me it was too good to be true.
If we wait long enough though, I have this sneaking suspicion that we'll see more low-carb baking products pop up for sale one of these days in the near future. |

The polyd reaction is because it is almost pure fiber, as opposed to a sugar alcohol reaction. With time, your body will acclimate to larger amounts of fiber, whereas I don't know if you ever develop a tolerance for SA's. Plus, fiber has many benefits. So, don't give up on polyd, because it's great stuff! Just start with small amounts and work up gradually.
