Is it true you can eat these type of Greens?

Ok I was eating a pre made salad from Meijers, as I was looking at the different type of greens in it, I saw one that looked like a Dandelion leaf/green. I asked one of the guys at work and he said its a Dandelion green, I was like, You mean to tell me I can go out in my yard and pick Dandelion greens and eat them? I know there very good for horses, but humans? Has anyone every heard of such a thing, or do you think he was "pulling my leg"?? I have heard of Dandelion jelli, but just thought it was a name of some type of jelli, Anyone know about this?? Thanks

Yes, you can eat them. At my local grocery store, they have a huuuuge produce dept with lots of less-common products, and they stock them there. We buy them to feed to our iguana. They are high in a lot of nutrients.

Not only can you eat dandelion greens, you can make wine out of dandelions, too.

Quote:
The leaves are used in all the same ways as spinach (except by a certain sailor-man). Raw leaves from mature plants are bitter unless blanched. They contain significant amounts of calcium, potassium, iron, vitamins C and A. The flowers are used in wine, but flower production reduces leaf production and quality, so wild flowers usually go into wine. Unopened flower buds can be sautéed. All parts of the dandelion are bitter after spring. The flowers also attract predatory (beneficial) insects (Kourik). The roots have many reported uses. Dried and roasted they are used as a caffeine-free coffee substitute, and can also be steamed like parsnips; they are a diuretic, and allegedly aid the secretion of toxins (bile) from the body. They may also be a laxative. The standard recommendation is to harvest wild leaves at least 75 feet from any road. Some people think wild varieties have the best flavor and medical value.
You can also eat pansies, carnations, and all sorts of flowers. This page lists edible flowers.

Please be very careful with the greens you take from your yard. It at ANY time you have put anything on your lawn to make it 'better' than you will also be eating chemicals!! Greens from clean fields are great and there are alot of them out there that are good. I have a recipe for chickweed pie that is great, but my DH sprays our lawn with all kinds of crap to make it greener!! Can't eat the chickweed or any other greens from my lawn, that's for sure!!

I am thinking of making a greens and herb garden this year in my regular garden patch with greens I get from the local herb nursery. I KNOW he doesn't put anything in there except chicken poop, so these greens will be safe from!!!
