What kind of coffee grinder do you have?
I bought a Mr. Coffee with 16 grind selections because I want to be able to fine grind the almonds. It was $30. Do you think it is an over-kill and that the $10 or $15 one will do just as well?

No, I think you made a great purchase. I'm into quality.
Originally, I bought a $10 grinder at Target and it served me well for about a year and finally broke. I used it a lot and felt I got my $10 worth. Since I used it so much, I didn't hesitate upgrade and bought a KitchenAid coffee grinder for $30. It is fabulous and grinds my almonds very fine. It's built like a tank and I feel it would last forever. I consider it as one of my best low carb purchases. Last edited by NorthernNisse; 06-26-2004 at 09:51 PM.. |

Here is the one I purchased. I bought mine on QVC for $29.99 plus shipping and handling, so it was around $36.00 total. This one is a bit more expensive, but free shipping. Either way, I would buy it again in a second. A really nice piece of quality equipment.

Kaycat: I purchased a Mr. Coffee burr mill coffee grinder with 16 grind setting a few months ago from Costco. I don't know if it's the same model that you have, but I used it to grind sunflower seeds and after the first use, the oils from the seeds caused the burr mill mechanism to clog up and it was very hard to clean it and get it working again. I don't think this burr mill model was designed to grind anything other than coffee, although I don't know how well it would work with almonds. Later, after I got it working again, I burned out the motor because I ground a batch for too long. So, if you have this model, you need to be very careful not to run the motor for very long!
I ended up buying the same KitchenAid model that Josie has, and it has been wonderful. No problem grinding the sunflower seeds, and it is very easy to clean. I live in the Denver area and bought mine at Foleys when it went on sale for about $30. Suzanne |

I'm not sure of models, but I went through several models for our office.
The best was a simple spinning blade mechanism with the lid that goes on top. As long as it has a decent capacity. I have a similar one at home - either a braun or krups. We had one at the office that was the same style, but way too small in capacity. if you ground enough coffee for a whole pot it was too full, and ground coffee went flying when you removed the lid. We tried one from costco with grinder settings, and the coffee spilled into a cup that fit along the side of the casing. When you removed the cup - coffee went everywhere from the connection between the chute and the clear plastic cup. and this one died after about 4-5 months. Then we tried another Costco purchase, and it was better. You could fill a hopper on top with a small supply of beans - enough for more than 2-3 pots at least - and you could adjust the grind by spinning that hopper. For 5 years now, I've owned the Cuisinart coffee maker that grinds and brews all in one pot. For quite a while, I thought it made terrible coffee. But after months of fiddling and experimenting, I finally got to the point that it made a decent pot. But its totally not worth it. I love fresh ground beans, but cleaning the cuisinart every day is a major hassle. Removing several parts, washing and drying them, etc. I see they have a new model in stores now, with some promo language that its easier to clean. I took one apart in a store, and it looks a little better, but not much. Bottom line - grinding coffee beans in a wet environment is not efficient. it makes a lot of sludge that never gets into the grounds for the drip basket. Since starting this WOE, and cutting back to 1 large mug per day, I've returned to using my good old Braun grinder, and a small french press pot. French presses make the best coffee in my opinion.

I am not a coffee drinker, so I just want to make note that I only use my grinder to make nut flours.

Yes, it grinds flax seed beautifully. Very easy to clean too. In fact, I usually just wipe mine out with a damp paper towel.

Tulcat-That looks terrific. Do you have one? If so, where did you get it. I did see a Kitchen Aid at Kohls and all my small applliances are the blue. I am not a coffee drinker either, Josie.

No, I don't have one but am shopping for a grinder and found it with a web search. Since I'm not sure about BB rules for posting links for a product such as this, you can find it by doing a Google search for "grain grinder k-tec".

I don't think there are any rules regarding posting links to these appliances. I am pretty sure you can freely discuss.
