Older cookbooks and new low-carb cookbooks:

This is such a fun thread for cookbook lovers. I came back and noticed it has grown substantially. Looks like we're all in good company. I think the older cookbooks (when fat was not the enemy), like Pam says, would actually have quite a few recipes we could comfortably convert. I hadn't really thought of that. Of course, they still used white flour, but it is easy to just sub a cup-for-cup bake mix.

My love for cookbooks extends to other reading as well. I enjoy reading non-fiction, but don't always have the time. I have trouble getting rid of any books, to be honest - it's a lot easier to let go of clothes, I no longer need. I have a library of them in the loft.

Jannis, you made me giggle - ummm that's an interesting way of putting things.

Hi Auntie!!!

Thanks, Alania. I concur about the lightly battered (vital wheat gluten and whey protein powder) Chinese Lemon Chicken - it is yummy at 3.9 g carbs per serving. I think I'm going to make that this week or next week again, along with some Chinese-style stir-fried veggies and cauli-rice. Thanks for reminding me!

We know what low-carb recipes look like, but have you ladies noticed amongst the many low-carb cookbooks that are being churned out - even by well-respected company names? - many of the recipes are not low-carb at all. The FDA is just about to define what constitutes low-carb and hopefully the new cookbooks will reflect that guideline. It's very disappointing to pick up a beautiful low-carb book, only to find it is not true low-carb cooking and baking.

Jen,
I know what you mean about some of the new low carb cookbooks! You have to be careful. I bought a beautiful one at Sam's Club for a friend. When I got home and looked it over, I was surprised at the ingredients, and carb counts. How could they call it a low carb cookbook?!?! I took it back. I will never buy another one without looking at it first - unless I get a very good recommendation. I would buy a regular cookbook, with no pretensions before I'd buy one of those!

I collect old cookbooks from the 40's,50's etc. I love them and friends looking for that old recipe that Gram or Mom used to make come to me. I agree alot of the recipes can be adapted into low-carb and I do experiment alot. Sometimes good sometimes . I know what you mean about the low-carb recipe books, looked at some at BJ's and I thought that most of the carb counts were high, and there were so many that still used sugar, flour and pasta!! Recently I redid my kitchen and did part with all of my Taste Of Home magazines, but first went though them and clipped out anything worthwhile.

I have several cookbooks as well. My mother collected zillions of recipies from friends, family and coworkers and printed out about 5 copies. The family recipies are 3 generations of Italian recipies......I'M NOT GIVING THEM UP....EVER......... I will always be a low carb eater for the most part but once in a blue moon I will have to make homemade pasta or pizzells ......my favorite Italian cookie...
Also in the collection is a cookbook I did with a church I used to belong too. Some great stuff that I can convert. Women from all ages contributed so it is special to me.

Criosa - I have bought a couple of beautiful low-carb cookbooks, too without looking at them properly, and then upon reading it at home, I was a little disappointed. So you're not the only one.

That's why I'm careful to have high standards for my recipes. All are below 10 grams and, for instance, More Splendid Low-Carbing stats are: 75% below 5 g carbs and 50% below 3 g carbs. It's important, especially for Atkins dieters.

Davislilacs58 - love those magazines! A friend gave me some as well as Country Woman just recently. I didn't know they existed until now. How wonderful to have your kitchen redone.

I must admit to also having fallen victim to the beautiful low carb cookbooks. I ordered a couple through a book club I belong to, so sight unseen purchased what appeared to be a couple of awesome books. What a disappointment to find carbs for a single serving checking in at as high as 56!! And the recipes don't even sound that good, upon reading. I'm sure at some point I'll find a redeeming quality! I have all of Jen's cookbooks, and I can attest to what she says. AND her recipes are wonderful. I think it's time that there were some standards as to what exactly is acceptable in terms of Low Carb labelling.

Hi Jen!

Raising my hand as another cook book collector! I can't part with them either.

And of course I won't part with my Mom's cookbooks, with the handwritten notes in the margins, and recipes added to the overleafs. She was a wonderful cook, but growing up I didn't have any interest in cooking. It's like having a part of her still with me.

I have some lc cookbooks too, mainly Atkins ones, Jen's, Dana Carpender's, and Suzanne Somers. I agree you have to be careful as some advertised lc cookbooks have pretty high carb items in them.
