Ice Cream Makers

I have seen a lot of recipies for Ice cream and was going to ask for an ice cream maker for Christmas but wanted to get some feedback from all of you experienced ice cream makers. What kind do you recommend? Which on is easiest to clean? Bigger or smaller? Expensive or cheap? Is it worth the money?

Thanks in advanced for your feedback!

Husband and I are Sam's Club members. We bought Cuisinart's Ice Cream maker.
The box came with two tubs so one can be used while the other is in the fridge.
This can probably be found at other stores, but I'm not sure if you can find it with the extra tub.

It works good. We like it a lot, It makes ice cream in 20 minutes. I found though, that I have to stand there and put a rubber spatula inside the tub while it spins. The ice crystals form quickly and the plastic scraper that fits inside the tub doesn't do a job good job once the crystals start building up. I put the edge of the spatula right against the side of the tub as it spins and it scrapes off the ice cream. That's just me though. I'm real anal about stuff and didn't like the way the ice cream came out when I just let the machine run on it's own. When I let it run on it's own, the ice cream came out like very soft Dairy Queen ice cream. When I used the spatula, it was a little firmer.

Homemade ice cream melts very fast! No preservatives that's why. I found a few large rubbermaid plastic containers and put the ice cream in that.

The only other thing is that the tubs do take up quite a lot of space in the freezer and they have to freeze for at least 24 hrs. for proper ice cream.

You'll need a good ice cream recipe book.
The one we have is "The Ultimate Ice Cream Book" by Bruce Weinstein. It's highy recommended on Amazon.com.
There are lots of others books.

Edited to add that this cost us $29-39. For this price with two freezer tubs, we couldn't pass it by.

There was a lengthy thread a while back, but I couldn't find it when I did a search.

Anyway, seems to me the consensus was the Cuisinart - it is the easiest to clean of all the ice cream makers (including the professional ones that cost in the hundreds of dollars), and the result is good. I love my Cuisinart - check out the Ice Cream sticky at the top of the page for some awesome recipes!

I have 2 different kinds - one that you freeze the bowl and just plug it in (which I love) and another that you have to add ice and salt to (which I hate).

I don't know what the brand is on mine - I think I got it at Target. It is real easy to clean and not too big to store (like that other add the ice and salt peice of crap!).

I rarely use it, but when I do I divide the ice cream up into little 1 cup tupperware containers and freeze. I will pull them out and set them on the counter for a 1/2 hr or so so they soften up because homemade ice cream is so hard!

I have a Cuisinart dual ice cream maker - you can make two kinds at once if you want. I love it. It's easy to use & easy to clean. I wonder if anyone has a recipe for pumpkin ice cream - that would be wonderful for Thanksgiving especially since it's been so darn hot this fall!

Phayes - I have a recipe from a long time ago! I'll try to remember to dig it up for you. I think it would need to be scaled down, since it makes a very large amount - but it was oh so delicious! Thanks for reminding me. I'm going to have to make some! Check back - I know you need it in the next couple of days. I'll do my best to find it!

LOVE my Cuisinart.

I went to epinions.com before I bought mine, as well as reading the reviews on amazon.com. People really seemed to like the motor in the Cuisinart better than the Rival (which has a small motor at the top that actually turns the blade... the Cuisinart's motor is larger, in the base, that turns the bowl - more like a blender).

I LOVE my Cuisinart.
did I say that before? LOL!

Another vote for the Cusinart ice cream maker.
I also got one, purchased it at Costco, where it came with a scoop and 4 dainty dessert dishes. Wonderful value!

It is great - and I think that it would make a great present for anyone - maybe along with a Ice Cream receipe book?. Ben + Jerry's makes an ice cream cook book. All the receipes can easily be modified to be low carb. There are so many creative ideas in it.

I want to finish all the atkins ice cream in my freezer, then make room to freeze the bowl to make homemade ice cream.
I think that you need some room your the freezer to store the bowl, ortherwises it just becomes a hassle to use.

I'll second or third (or fourth) the kudos for the Cuisinart.

I bought mine at Sam's Club in the summer for $35, including an extra bowl, and my hubby uses it all the time. It's a quick and easy dessert - you can make just before dinner and by the time you've eaten, it's ready.

We like the ice-cream quite soft, so we eat it right after we've made it.

The ice-cream maker is easy to clean and quite powerful. We made some awesome strawberry ice-cream this summer, when the strawberries were in season!

The Cuisinart gets two thumbs up from me!

thank you all! I think I am going to go for the cuisinart. I just wish I had known about it when Sam's had it with the extra bowl. Nuts, but I am not sure i need 2 bowls at the same time anyway!

I have the Rival Gourmet Creamery that Target sells for $34.99! I have only used it once, but it worked very well that one time!! Of course, that's back in the day when I made Cookies and cream and then suddenly fell into a sugar coma

Yeah, you really do need the two bowls. They must really be frozen a couple days to work well so unless you really only make one batch once in a while it is worth having the extra. Also they are excellent for fast cooling a cooler to take in the car, saving ice and time.

The old ice and salt machines are messy, but what family memories are made using them when you want a large amount at once. We froze cartons of ice which when thrown on a cement surface cracked nicely for making ice cream. Our grown kids still want to make it when they come back.

Does anyone have any recommendations for ice cream makers? This was the only thread I could find on the subject. Thanks,

I have the Waring Ice Cream Parlor. It's a countertop electric model. You add regular ice cubes and regular table salt. It makes 1.5 quarts.

I never have room in the freezer so the one I had which required the gel-filled bowl to be frozen at least 24 hours in advance never worked out well for us. With the "add ice/salt" model, I can make ice cream on a whim without worrying about a frozen bowl!

It makes great ice cream in under 30 minutes, nothing to do but fill it up and wait!

Very happy with my Lello 4070 Gelato Junior. Read the reviews on Amazon.

No salt/ice or pre-freezing required as the unit is its own mini-freezer. Ice cream ready in about 30 minutes

Ditto on the Lello. Best price on Amazon, too, and unless something's changed, a much better price than the Cuisinart Automatic (though the Cuisinart has the pretty stainless steel exterior). When I ordered it, it was free shipping, which is good cuz it's bulky and heavy...

No ice, no salt, no room needed in the freezer (just room on the counter or in the cupboard, like all of them).

THANK you all. I just order the Lello from Amazon. Can't wait to try the recipes in the Ice Cream thread.
