ShelbyLA - From Start to Finish with (h)HCG

Hi all!

Just wanted to share my story here as I am a low-carb success!

I began my weight loss journey in my early teens, as we women so often do, with calorie restriction. I am a tall gal and in high school, after the onset of those LOVELY hormones, I "ballooned" up to the 140's. Emphasis on the ballooned because at 5'7" or so, I was by no means seriously overweight, I just wanted to be thinner. I started eating less and went so far one summer as to only eat watermelon for weeks at a time. If I had known then what I know now about the sugar content of watermelon...oy! I spent years after high school tinkering with weight loss via calorie restriction in the 80's, fat restriction in the 90's (cabbage soup anyone?), and excessive exercise, supplementation (CLA, glucomannen, acai, hoodia), and counseling programs (Weight Watcher, Jenny Craig) in the early 2000's. I bought into the fiber craze and ate raw foods and lots and lots of psyllium. And still I struggled with my weight.

Fast forward to 2004 when I was stationed in London for a year. At this point, I was frustrated that my attempts at weight loss weren't yielding the results I wanted. I ate healthy (most of the time), I exercised regularly. I was out of options...until I decided to try Atkins. I started at around 180 pounds, and again, at 5'9", I was overweight but not obese. To my surprise, the Atkins WOE and lifestyle agreed with me and over the course of the next 8 month, I lost 35 pounds, putting me in the low 140's. I came back to America, thin, happy and resolved to stick to a LC lifestyle.

Well, that resolution lasted until I got my hands on some of the LC products in America that weren't available to me in England on my initial foray into low-carb. Dreamfields, Atkins shakes, pork rinds, artificial sweeteners all contributed to a slide back into eating more processed foods and fewer whole foods. I remember the day that I decided to eat sugar for the first time again. It was a friend's birthday and I let myself be talked into having a piece of cake. I had returned from England in February, the birthday cake was early August, and by late 2005, I had regained all my weight and then some.

Having always had heavy hips and thighs (that no diet would touch), I decided on liposuction surgery in early 2006. At the time I weighed around 180 (again!), with most of that weight disproportionally distributed in my lower body. The lipo resulted in great re-shaping and a loss of about 6 or 7 pounds and resulting diet and exercise plan got me down into the upper 150's at my lowest but...life happened and I ended up gaining the weight back. While post-lipo, you gain weight differently, you still gain it. Now, I had backfat and batwings (which I had never had before) and MORE weight on my legs.

I recommitted (again) to low carb in early 2007 but struggled with slow to non-existent weight loss. Over the next couple of years, I tried Atkins, I tried South Beach, I tried various forms of VLC eating including Meat & Eggs and Zero Carb. Each attempt left me frustrated and looking for a better way. Around the same time, I started investigating a long-standing thyroid and adrenal problem. After a lot of trial and error (with a LOT of learning along the way), I optimized my hormones and my meds but I still couldn't maintain my weight, much less lose. (Anyone who thinks that optimizing your thyroid will magically make you lose weight--think again!) I had one period where I was eating meat & eggs for 3 months and I lost 6 pounds. One night I decided to "treat" myself and ate...BROCCOLI. The next day, every single one of those pounds was back on.

During my thyroid journey, I had a doctor recommend hcg injections to me. I listened patiently until he got to the "500 calories per day" part. I said, "500 calories per day? You have GOT to be kidding me! I eat more than that for breakfast! I think I'll just try the old-fashioned diet-and-exercise plan, thanks." What I was thinking was "You just want me to come into your office for 6 weeks, pay you $150 a week, for a placebo. ANYONE would lose weight on 500 calories per day! (Jacka$$!)" I had a few issues with this particular doctor anyway (love me some endocrinologists! ) so I really just put this in another one of his scam buckets. But it stayed in the back of my mind. I mean who wouldn't want to lose 30 pounds in 30 days?

I continued to struggle with my weight and at the beginning of 2011, I weighed in at 210 pounds. My heaviest ever and well into the obese category for someone who is 5'9". I ran into a friend who had tried the hhcg method with some success so I bought some supplies, set myself up for a mini-cleanse before the round (a left-over from my "candida cleanse" beliefs), and got set to jump into the 500 calorie per day plan. Immediately prior to my start, I had a low blood sugar episode (complete with crying, migraine, and biting off the heads of various co-workers) so I was hesitant that eating 500 calories per day would work for me. But I was resolved...so off I went, into hhcg-land.

I did my first round on hhcg drops and lost 24 pounds in 33 days, with nary a low-blood sugar episode during the entire time. Including the 10 pounds I lost during my mini-cleanse, I was down to 175. I took the protocol-prescribed P3 and P4 breaks, with my P4 ending with a 10 day Mexican cruise where I ate anything and everything. I came back exactly 2 pounds heavier than when I left and immediately jumped into loading for my second round. My second round I lost another 24 pounds and dropped from overweight into solidly normal range at 151. I maintained between 150 and 155 easily, eating 2000+ calories daily, from May 2011 to January of 2012. If I was over my window, I did a correction day and dropped right back down. I was able to eat fruit and limited amount of complex carbs with little trouble. In January, I loaded for a final round to try and take off those pesky last 10 pounds. The round was a minimum round of 23 days and I dropped to 140, seeing the 130's briefly in my last vlcd without the hcg. hHCG allowed me to lose ~50 pounds in 2 rounds and two months of active dieting and ~70 pounds in a year.

Unlike my other two rounds, the January round did NOT stick well. I am guessing that eating 4000+ calories my first day of P3 which included dairy, nuts, and lots of sweets wasn't the best idea? All on P3 legal but still... Or, despite being up almost 5 pounds the next day, not doing a correction day?? I popped up to the mid-140's and couldn't seem stay in the low-140's. Over the past couple of months, I tried a few different stabilizing plans including JUDDD and the Leptin re-set but nothing really seemed to help keep me in my happy place.

When push came to shove, I decided that the magic of hcg could work one more time and help me STICK the weight that I want. I am nearing the end of my 4th and hopefully LAST round, using the prescription hcg this time. This morning I weighed in at 137.9. 10+ pounds down of real fat in the last 2 weeks. This week I will increase protein portions to stop the weight loss and fix the weight. P3 will be by the book and by the standard recommendations this time--no messing with chocolate pecan torte on day 1! And if I can't stick this weight, well, that means I need to learn to live with the 150's. It means that I will be a size 4/6 instead of a size 2/4. And that's ok. I know that I can maintain in a healthy range for the rest of my life. And that is FANTASTIC.

I don't know what the future might hold as far as diet goes. I continue to learn about metabolism and diet and the impact of what we ingest on our bodies. I will always be a low-carb fan though and I am a living hcg success story!

Thanks for letting me tell it.

I used mostly Intermountain hhCG from Netrition my first three rounds, both drops and pellets. My last round I did prescription injections. No real discernible difference between the hunger or weight loss levels between the hhCG or the injections, although I found the injections to be much more convenient.

Thanks Tiffany!

My exercise program is...ehem...as little exercise as possible? Seriously though, I have never ever been a huge fan of exercise (except, oddly, when told I am not ALLOWED to exercise! ) so I do as little as I can get away with. Right now that amounts to treadclimber 30 minutes 3x per week, power yoga 60 minutes 1x per week. I suppose I should start adding weights back in...<sigh> I will be going scuba diving in a couple of weeks so hoping that helps counteract those margaritas and daiquiris in Mexico...

When I went to the Netrition site, I see no information for hhcg or the Intermountain brand... Does the brand or type of hhcg matter so much? I'm just learning about this and I have been very skeptical in the past, but your results are hard to ignore! Congrats!
Were you under the care of a doctor through this? What I mean is, a doctor who specifically guided you through it? Otherwise, how do you know what to do and for how long, etc.?
Are you currently eating low carb?
I apologize for all the questions. Your history of ups and downs is very similar to mine, so your recent success gives me hope!
