Almost 1 year later....
11 months ago, I was diagnosed pre-diabetic, on the highest dose of cholesterol medicine, had very high blood pressure and just felt awful. My doctor warned me i needed to lose weight and change the way I eat or I was going to have serious blood sugar issues. She recommended I try a low carb diet, and it would be helpful if I lost even 5 pounds. I was 260 lbs and decided after I got off the phone with her that I needed to change things.
I did some reading, and decided to do a prolonged induction of 20-30 carbs. It ended up being a 6 month induction, through which I lost 70lbs. I was fortunate in that the weight literally felt like it was falling off. I know its pretty rare, but I never cheated...NOT ONCE. I did some reading on diabetes and realized what a horrible disease it really is; That was motivation enough to follow the weight loss through. I began "maintaining" in month 7 and have been lucky enough to be in a 3 pound range over the past 5 months. I am completely off my cholesterol and blood pressure medications, my blood sugar is normal, and I am doing something I haven't done since I was 20...exercising. Before the weight loss, I never would have considered exercising (nor could I). I now have so much more energy and I've lost 6 inches off my waist. Its been almost a year, and I don't miss the food I once thought I couldn't live without. How could I live without pizza Last edited by fsfty; 05-05-2012 at 06:25 PM.. |

Terrific job!!! Thank you for sharing your story.. You are really showing that you can maintain your weight within 5 pounds.. Most diets tell you that when you maintain to try stay within that range.. and you have proven it can be done!! Good for you!!

Thanks so much. I love reading these great success stories. Just starting on my second week and I am super focused. Lost 7 pounds in the first week. Now I want the time to fly by to really see more success. Why didn't I do this in January? I could kick myself!!

Dh is diabetic 2 and he is not taking it very seriously and of course I am very worried about him and our future. Is there a book you would recommend that would help him "see the light?"
Thanks. |

heidi- I know your question was not directed at me but I'll answer anyway. Low Carb Revolution by John McLean is informative and entertaining. He explains insulin in an easy to understand way. It's not available in hard copy, that I know of, but I downloaded from Amazon to my mac (cheap). Also available to read on cloud. I've read tons of books and this one is just different, but good.
