Cocoa Powder review

I love all things chocolate, but I am not a cocoa powder snob. haha

I have used Penzey's cocoa powder, Hershey's, Toll House and even Bensdorp Dutch Process cocoa. I typically use Hershey's cocoa powder, both the regular and dark variety. Basically, I am saying I have used a wide range of cocoa powders.

I bought some Trader Joe's cocoa powder earlier this week and think it is the worst cocoa powder I have ever used. It had a very strange taste to it. I used it with a tried and true basic recipe that I use weekly.

I know taste is an individual thing, so opinions will vary. Has anyone else used Trader Joe's cocoa powder and liked it?

I do not have a TJ here, but I agree with you that all cocoa powders are not created equal. I cheaped out and bought a no name brand...there is like - no flavour to it at all. Didn't end up being cheaper if I have to use more or buy a new one all together.

I agree not all cocoa powders are equal. I've used a lot of them also. Girghedelli is way up there on my favorites.

I have not tried TJ.

I recently bought a container of TJ's cocoa powder and had it open next to some Ghiradelli and it just looked different. Lighter and not as rich. I didn't notice any difference in flavor, but I just used a little when the other kind ran out.

I like the TJ's fine. I have also used Scharfenberger and Ghirardelli, which are "higher end" I guess. I have read that trick is to get the ones with more calories per tablespoon from more fat. They are more of the whole cocoa bean and richer flavored.

for example, if you look at the NOW brand Netrition has, there are 2.5 grams of fat in a quarter cup. a similar amount of the Ghirardelli (4 Tablespoons equals a quarter cup) has 6 grams of fat.

you can also use unsweetened baking chocolate in a lot of things.

I recently tried Trader Joe's cocoa. I found that the flavor was less strong than Hershey's or Nestles, but it dissolved better. It was cheaper, but you have to use more to get the same flavor.

Both of Penzeys cocoas are my favorites but I can't choose between them. I tried Trader Joe's cocoa once and it was so bad that I took it back to the store for a refund. Pooti and I did a taste test once with some coconut oil chocolates I'd made with each kind and the Trader Joe's had no chocolate flavor at all compared to the Penzeys.

Take a look at double-Dutch processed cocoa. You may find it referred to as 'black'. Basically it is the cocoa from which Oreos and other dark cocoa cookies are made. It has that unique choco flavor not found in off the shelf cocoas.

The local WinCo has Callebaut (!) dutch process cocoa in the bulk section and at a quarter of the price of the only other dutch process you can get in stores around here (Droste), it is also better tasting. I even like it better than my previous favorite, the Bensdorp.

I like scharffen berger - party because it's incredible and partly because it's fun to say with a Swedish chef accent. Second is Valhrona. Good cocoa powder makes all the difference - especially in something like fat bombs where it plays a big role....

Well, crap. I literally just bought some TJ's cocoa powder to use after I finished up my Rapunzel brand. Hopefully it'll be ok, haha!

I tried Trader Joe's one time as a trade-off and went back to my usual brand - the TJs was somehow flat. Aunt Patty's organics has a 22/24 dark cocoa powder that is absolutely wonderful, so deep and rich that a little goes a long way. Everything I cook with it tastes better! It's a bit pricey, but worth it.
