Cold Plates and Cups?

This may sound too simple, but because of the cold weather, my coffee cup
is always cold after being in the cupboard..So, I just microwave it with
nothing in it for a minute so my coffee stays warmer.

I do the same thing with my dinner plates. My mom (NHampshire) would always take the plates out of the cupboard several hours before dinner.
She didn't have a microwave.

I never think to do this. But, I remember as a kid, that my grandparents would sometimes warm up the plates in the oven before a holiday/family meal. Hmmm, may have to think about doing it, too.

I know we were told never to microwave without food or liquid in the oven. the definition of a "microwave safe" container is one that does not absorb the microwaves and get warm. if your cups and plates are really warming up with nothing in them, I would worry about using them in the microwave, sorry.

I agree - I always heard it could damage your microwave if you turn it on with no food or liquid inside.

Warm plates and coffee cups sound nice, though. I would just run some hot water over them to preheat them.

I sometimes set the plates on top of my toaster oven and run it through a couple of toast cycles to warm them up.

I'd not run the microwave with an empty cup or plate in it. It can back up the microwave energy into the magnetron tube and cause it to fail. Put a little water in the cup, or a dampened paper towel on the plate, so there is something to absorb the MW energy.

A lot of times, if I'm reheated a meal, I'll put the plates underneath the container which has the food I'm reheating. By the time the food in the container is hot, the plates are nice and warm too!

Yikes..I will put water in my cup from now on..I was wondering about that myself.
The plates will go on the counter..

I don't use a microwave, but I do run hot water in the cup first. Or use the warming oven for plates. A freezing cold cup sure kills that first cup of coffee!
