You guys who have gardens...has this ever happened to you?

My collards are making heads like cabbage, they taste like collards but they look like cabbage. I've never had this happen before and I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this before.

Boy, that doesn't look like collard greens to me - it looks like curly-leaf cabbage! Are you SURE you planted collards? Any chance the seeds got mixed up? Or maybe the seed company screwed up!

I bought the little plants at the feed store in August. We've been breaking the bottom leaves off and eating them this whole time the way you normally do with collards and we didn't notice anything unusual about them.

Then we got a couple of 31 degree nights a few weeks ago and they suddenly started making heads. I've been growing and eating collards my whole life and I've never seen them do this. If they were cabbage wouldn't they taste like cabbage? It's just weird, I'm wondering if the collards and the curly leaf cabbage crossed at the nursery. Is that even possible?

LOL, my daughter asked me the same thing....Mom are you SURE they were collard plants?

Hey Ms. Chicken Lady

You got you some curly cabbage. I think that they are a cross, and it
could be by accident. Wish I had some right now. Are you going to
stuff those leaves with meat? Looks mighty good to me.

We had us some green beans, ham and a few pintos tossed in for
a good New Year's dish. Made my First Draft Cornbread to go with it
and some hot sauce.

You all have a very happy healthy New Year 2014.

No I just broke off an armload of leaves to cook for dinner tonight. I washed them, chopped them up and wilted them in some bacon grease. Then added chicken broth, onions, garlic, celery, peppers, salt and pepper and cooked them down. I just tasted them and wow they're good!!!

We're having:

Roast beef
Black-eyed Peas----you eat them so you'll have good luck in the new year
Weird Collards----and you have to eat some greens so you'll have money LOL
Mashed potatoes and gravy for the guys
and LC cornbread

Chicken Lady... I love greens and live in TN. This looks like Cabbage Collards. It is an heirloom plant from NC. If you google Cabbage Collards pictures will come up.
